Le parti pris est de permettre, outre le recours éventuel à des logiciels ou des feuilles de calcul Excel (téléchargement gratuit sur http://e-cahiers.cstb.fr), la possibilité d'un calcul manuel utilisant des tableaux ou abaques. Dans certains cas, libre choix est ainsi laissé au calculateur de recourir à la méthode qu'il juge la plus adaptée au cas particulier à traiter et aux moyens dont il dispose. Ce guide, élaboré par le CTICM s'inscrit dans ce programme général. Il permet le calcul des structures en acier en situation d'incendie. Les outils et méthodes de calcul proposés permettent de respecter les principes de dimensionnement figurant dans l'EN1993-1-2 (Eurocode 3 partie 1-2).
