Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for the Second Edition "This book is an excellent introduction to the wide field of boundary value problems."—Journal of Engineering Mathematics "No doubt this textbook will be useful for both students and research workers."—Mathematical Reviews A new edition of the highly-acclaimed guide to boundary value problems, now featuring modern computational methods and approximation theory Green's Functions and Boundary Value Problems, Third Edition continues the tradition of the two prior editions by providing mathematical techniques for the use of differential and integral equations to tackle important problems in applied mathematics, the physical sciences, and engineering. This new edition presents mathematical concepts and quantitative tools that are essential for effective use of modern computational methods that play a key role in the practical solution of boundary value problems. With a careful blend of theory and applications, the authors successfully bridge the gap between real analysis, functional analysis, nonlinear analysis, nonlinear partial differential equations, integral equations, approximation theory, and numerical analysis to provide a comprehensive foundation for understanding and analyzing core mathematical and computational modeling problems. Thoroughly updated and revised to reflect recent developments, the book includes an extensive new chapter on the modern tools of computational mathematics for boundary value problems. The Third Edition features numerous new topics, including: Nonlinear analysis tools for Banach spaces Finite element and related discretizations Best and near-best approximation in Banach spaces Iterative methods for discretized equations Overview of Sobolev and Besov space linear Methods for nonlinear equations Applications to nonlinear elliptic equations In addition, various topics have been substantially expanded, and new material on weak derivatives and Sobolev spaces, the Hahn-Banach theorem, reflexive Banach spaces, the Banach Schauder and Banach-Steinhaus theorems, and the Lax-Milgram theorem has been incorporated into the book. New and revised exercises found throughout allow readers to develop their own problem-solving skills, and the updated bibliographies in each chapter provide an extensive resource for new and emerging research and applications. With its careful balance of mathematics and meaningful applications, Green's Functions and Boundary Value Problems, Third Edition is an excellent book for courses on applied analysis and boundary value problems in partial differential equations at the graduate level. It is also a valuable reference for mathematicians, physicists, engineers, and scientists who use applied mathematics in their everyday work.

This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a lively and accessible introduction to the numerical solution of stochastic differential equations with the aim of making this subject available to the widest possible readership. It presents an outline of the underlying convergence and stability theory while avoiding technical details. Key ideas are illustrated with numerous computational examples and computer code is listed at the end of each chapter. The authors include 150 exercises, with solutions available online, and 40 programming tasks. Although introductory, the book covers a range of modern research topics, including Itô versus Stratonovich calculus, implicit methods, stability theory, nonconvergence on nonlinear problems, multilevel Monte Carlo, approximation of double stochastic integrals, and tau leaping for chemical and biochemical reaction networks. An Introduction to the Numerical Simulation of Stochastic Differential Equations is appropriate for undergraduates and postgraduates in mathematics, engineering, physics, chemistry, finance, and related disciplines, as well as researchers in these areas. The material assumes only a competence in algebra and calculus at the level reached by a typical first-year undergraduate mathematics class, and prerequisites are kept to a minimum. Some familiarity with basic concepts from numerical analysis and probability is also desirable but not necessary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Monte Carlo method is inherently parallel and the extensive and rapid development in parallel computers, computational clusters and grids has resulted in renewed and increasing interest in this method. At the same time there has been an expansion in the application areas and the method is now widely used in many important areas of science including nuclear and semiconductor physics, statistical mechanics and heat and mass transfer. This book attempts to bridge the gap between theory and practice concentrating on modern algorithmic implementation on parallel architecture machines. Although a suitable text for final year postgraduate mathematicians and computational scientists it is principally aimed at the applied scientists: only a small amount of mathematical knowledge is assumed and theorem proving is kept to a minimum, with the main focus being on parallel algorithms development often to applied industrial problems. A selection of algorithms developed both for serial and parallel machines are provided. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Introduction (231 KB). Contents: Basic Results of Monte Carlo Integration; Optimal Monte Carlo Method for Multidimensional Integrals of Smooth Functions; Iterative Monte Carlo Methods for Linear Equations; Markov Chain Monte Carlo Methods for Eigenvalue Problems; Monte Carlo Methods for Boundary-Value Problems (BVP); Superconvergent Monte Carlo for Density Function Simulation by B-Splines; Solving Non-Linear Equations; Algorithmic Effciency for Different Computer Models; Applications for Transport Modeling in Semiconductors and Nanowires. Readership: Applied scientists and mathematicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A broad introduction to algorithms for decision making under uncertainty, introducing the underlying mathematical problem formulations and the algorithms for solving them. Automated decision-making systems or decision-support systems—used in applications that range from aircraft collision avoidance to breast cancer screening—must be designed to account for various sources of uncertainty while carefully balancing multiple objectives. This textbook provides a broad introduction to algorithms for decision making under uncertainty, covering the underlying mathematical problem formulations and the algorithms for solving them. The book first addresses the problem of reasoning about uncertainty and objectives in simple decisions at a single point in time, and then turns to sequential decision problems in stochastic environments where the outcomes of our actions are uncertain. It goes on to address model uncertainty, when we do not start with a known model and must learn how to act through interaction with the environment; state uncertainty, in which we do not know the current state of the environment due to imperfect perceptual information; and decision contexts involving multiple agents. The book focuses primarily on planning and reinforcement learning, although some of the techniques presented draw on elements of supervised learning and optimization. Algorithms are implemented in the Julia programming language. Figures, examples, and exercises convey the intuition behind the various approaches presented.

Each year the editorial board selects significant topics and invites papers from authors who have made notable contributions to the development of that topic. The articles are intended to summarize the field at a level accessible to graduate students and researchers. Acta Numerica has proved to be a valuable tool not only for researchers and professionals wishing to develop their understanding of the subject and follow developments, but also as an advanced teaching aid at colleges and universities. Articles in previous volumes have been expanded into both monographs and textbooks, and many of the original articles themselves have been used as the prime resource for graduate courses.
