The book begins by reviewing the background of sustainability and sustainable development. The focus then turns to the effects of climate change on the built environment, including impacts of energy and carbon emissions, as well as constraints on water and waste management. The remaining chapters discuss the necessary approaches to achieve sustainable waste management, energy efficient building design, and resilience and adaptation in the built environment In eight chapters, the book encourages readers to think independently, logically and objectively about the complex issues presented by the applications of sustainable development in construction, including resource efficiency, environmental impacts, human health, building economics and social development.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee decided to examine the UK Energy Efficiency Action Plan with particular reference to Defra's efforts to improve households' energy efficiency and its statutory duty under the Warm Homes and Energy Conservation Act 2008 to ensure that people in England do not live in fuel poverty after November 2016. The Committee had received many responses to its call for evidence, but on 3 October 2008 the Prime Minister announced the creation of a new Government department, the Department of Energy and Climate Change. The responsibility for fuel poverty was passed from Defra to the new Department. The Committee decided not to proceed with its inquiry, but has decided to publish the written evidence it received on this subject. The Committee recommends that the new select committee set up to examine the expenditure, policy and administration of the new Department of Energy and Climate Change seriously consider holding an inquiry into fuel poverty at the earliest opportunity.

Book Synopsis House Rating Schemes by : Maria Kordjamshidi
Download or read book House Rating Schemes written by Maria Kordjamshidi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-25 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "House Rating Schemes" provides information to students, architects and researchers in the field of the built environment. It reviews current House Rating Schemes (HRS) used in different countries and investigates how these schemes assess the thermal performance of a house. It challenges the way that these schemes assess building energy efficiency and their inability to evaluate free running buildings which do not need an energy load for heating and cooling indoor environments. Finally, the book proposes a new index and method for HRS in which the efficiency of a house design can be evaluated with reference to its thermal performance in both free running and conditioned operation modes. The book deals with various approaches and methods for rating buildings on the basis of different indexes, with implications for both energy efficiency and thermal comfort. It also guides readers through a computer simulation program for developing a rating system that evaluates and ranks building energy efficiency.
