Learners’ common misconceptions about relevant concepts are also revealed. For learner problems which may be the result of L1 interference, a contrastive approach is adopted in analysing the cause and nature of the errors. Since passivization has complex structures across different languages, English passives and Cantonese passives do not undergo the same syntactic operation. The current paper provides background information about the contrastive approach in SLA research, rules of forming English passives and types of passives in Cantonese. With a research design of a grammaticality judgment test, Cantonese ESL learners' sensitivity to different passive constructions related to NP-movement and thematic roles is explored. Learners' competence in judging ergative or middle constructions is also investigated. I am one of them. I want to understand how it is acquired, and how students come to understand the important area of subject-verb agreement. The purpose of the research was to gain an understanding of local students whose mother tongue is Cantonese (L1), and what are the factors affecting their acquisition of subject-verb agreement in English. To a lesser degree, it is aimed at gaining an understanding of how language is acquired; to gain an understanding on how second language is acquired; and to gain an understanding of how grammar is acquired. The research was carried out as the author wanted to see if there was a reason why students could not understand subject-verb agreement in English. The author wanted to look at four main reasons. These included biological reasons, physiological reasons, developmental reason, and cultural reason. The research was conducted on children aged six to twelve from two main school streams (public and private) using a quantitative and qualitative survey. The quantitative survey included fifteen missing words, twenty statements, and five sentences to see if students could recognise if the statements were ungrammatical or grammatical. The qualitative survey was conducted with a group of primary four students (aged nine to ten) to gain an understanding of why certain answers were selected and what was the reasoning behind the decisions the participants made. From the researcher, it was discovered there was some level of first language interference, though to the exact degree it was questionable as it could not be determined quantifiably. It was evident from the YoE data that students new to English had the highest number of errors. It was also found that there was no absolute or definitive time or age when subject-verb agreement was evident. However, there was a sharp decrease in the number of errors at both schools at the age of eight. The results also show that culture does influence the learning of English as a second language in Hong Kong. It is not just because Cantonese has no Subject-verb agreement; it also extends to the teaching practices in the classroom and the culture of teaching through grammar. The problems this created became evident in the research. This dissertation examines the factors involved in the resetting of the null subject parameter of Cantonese speaking learners of English. It shows how null subject transfer differs between topic oriented languages such as Cantonese and pro-drop languages like Spanish. It then explores the evidence for triggers that has been suggested in studies of the null subject parameter in other topic oriented languages by Wakabayashi (2002), Yang (1998), Park (2004) and Yuan (1997). The problems that arise from the conflicting results of these studies are then compared to the results of my own study of four Cantonese speaking young learners of English, aged eight, nine, ten and eleven, whose oral language was recorded over a six week period and studied for the production of null subjects and possible triggers. The paper surprisingly 1concludes that unlike the previous studies, there is no evidence of parametric resetting but rather a non null subject parameter is acquired in a similar way to that proposed by Valian's 1991 study of first language non null subject acquisition. I suggest that the findings can be accounted for by the age difference of the participants in the different studies. It investigates how people acquire another language which is not their native language. Many have argued that SLA research has important contributions to make to an understanding of the mature of language and human cognition. It is generally accepted that in progressing to the grammar of the second language, learners have their own version of the second language called 'interlanguage'. Interlanguage resembles part of the grammar of the second language as well as the first language. Based on the notion of interlanguage, it is expected that learners will make mistakes since the interlanguage of learners have not yet fully attained the grammar of the second language. Cantonese does not have functional equivalents of the English Subject-verb agreement. Correspondingly, there is plenty of observational evidence that Cantonese speakers have difficulty with Subject-verb agreement system in English. For instance, Chinese secondary learners have great difficulties in learning tenses. Levinson(1983) points in Chinese without true tenses the concept of time is expressed by adverbs as well as other implicit and contextual assumptions. In this thesis, the written production as well as grammaticality judgment data obtained from native Cantonese speakers acquiring English as a second language was examined. The grammar errors which were related to Subject-verb agreement mainly about singular & plural, tense, negation and interrogation were selected as the target iii 5grammar items. The finding of F2 and F5 subjects were compared in order to explore the language development among adolescents. This thesis aimed at studying the acquisition of English Subject-Verb agreement by native Cantonese speakers. One of the objectives was to examine and describe the production of English Subject-Verb agreement and to provide an explanation of the phenomena found. Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled "Cantonese-speaking Students' Handling of WH-questions in English" Submitted by Wat Lok Sze, Josephine for the degree of Master of Arts in Linguistics at The University of Hong Kong In June 2006 Both L1 and L2 empirical researches reveal that difficulty in handling wh-movement in English interrogatives is a common phenomenon for both L1 and L2 English learners. Previous studies suggested that the properties of the wh-words, imperfect application of inversion rule, syntactic complexity, first language intervention and learner's use of learning strategies all contributed to the phenomenon. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the phenomenon of performing inversion in English interrogatives by Hong Kong primary schools' learners of English as a second language. Three research questions are studied in the present study: (1) what type(s) of wh-question(s) causes difficulty in wh-movement to Hong Kong learners of English as a second language, (2) What is/are the reason(s) for the difficulties and (3) What are the pedagogical implications to teaching and learning. Twenty upper-primary students from a government-aided primary school participated in the study. For research question 1, subjects were asked to do a question-and-answer (Q & A) test in English interrogatives to investigate what types of wh-questions causes difficulty in wh-movement. For research question 2, a grammatical judgment task was conducted to examine the degree of first language intervention. For research question 3, an intensive instruction of learning strategies was given to the subjects for a week. The effectiveness of the instruction was evaluated by asking the subject to do the Q & A test again in research question 1. Results of the test reveal that subjects have better performance in handling wh-movement in argument wh-questions than in adjunct wh-questions. Learner's performance is sensitive to syntactic complexity. First language intervention is not the prime and sole cause of the difficulty in handling inversion. Student's performance of inversion can benefit from the proper use of learning strategies. With reference to the results of the study, it is concluded that the difficulty of wh-movement is a multi-factor phenomenon. Properties of the wh-words, syntactic complexity, first language intervention and language learning strategies all play a role. The research findings in the present study confirm previous L1 and L2 research on inversion.
