Le Bescherelle désigne même cette règle grammaticale comme "la plus artificielle de la langue française".La règle d'accord du complément d'objet direct qui précède le participe passé serait une "tradition" qui nous viendrait des copistes du moyen-âge. Les moines copistes qui utilisaient la plume pouvaient aisément faire l'accord avec le complément s'il précédait le verbe, mais plus difficilement lorsqu'il se retrouvait beaucoup plus loin dans la phrase. Il était donc fréquent que l'accord soit omis, d'où la règle qui veut que l'accord se fasse avec le participe passé lorsque le complément direct est situé avant le verbe. La fameuse règle du participe passé aurait été décrétée par Clément Marot, un poète français à l'époque de la Renaissance qui, durant sa vie, fut également le poète officiel du roi de France, François Ier. Le roi demanda à Marot d'établir une règle qui régirait l'accord du participe passé. Marot, qui était fortement influencé par l'Italie et sa langue, utilisa une règle d'accord des participes inspirée par la grammaire italienne et qui s'apparente à celle que nous appliquons encore de nos jours : l'accord se fait avec le nom ou le pronom qui précède le verbe. La règle entraînera une multitude de complications, ce qui fit dire à Voltaire: "Marot a ramené deux choses d'Italie: la vérole et l'accord du participe passé. Je pense que c'est le deuxième qui a fait le plus de ravages". Le but de ce petit guide non exhaustif et de permettre, aux étudiants ou toute autre personne intéressée de maîtriser les règles et particularités les plus courantes concernant l'accord du participe passé, de savoir le conjuguer et l'accorder à bon escient. Pour chaque singularité sur laquelle les puristes n'ont pas pu se mettre d'accord, nous avons essayé de retenir l'opinion moyenne, c'est-à-dire l'usage le plus courant.

The emergence of syntactic formal features through grammaticalization is understood as a last-resort repair mechanism for pragmatically costly derivations.
