Book excerpt: One of the main problems encountered in impregnated diamond core drilling operations for deep mineral explorations is to remotely infer bit wear state and to drill with optimal performance at great depth. Currently the optimal drilling performance relies heavily on operator experience. This paper aims to assess the feasibility of acoustic emission (AE) monitoring of the impregnated diamond drilling process and to establish relations between AE signals and diamond drill bit wear to improve overall drilling performance. AE relations with various drilling parameters have also been investigated to understand signal characteristics in relation to operational parameters. Echidna drill apparatus that simulates field exploration diamond drilling on a small scale is used to monitor AE during rock bit interaction. AE sensors were attached to both the drill and the rock in question to record acoustic signals being emitted whilst drilling. Two different tests viz. 'step tests' and 'wear tests' were carried out. Step tests on the Echidna drill include stepping down the depth of cut from 130μm to 0μm, while cutting speed is constant. Secondly, wear tests performed on the Echidna drill, involves accelerating the wear rate of the drill bit via two different types of tests, both in highly abrasive rock. Based on the step test results, a series of linear relations were developed. These relations are capable of estimating the depth of cut, weight on the bit (WOB) and torque on the bit (TOB) by simply using time spectrum of the AE signals. Wear tests also showed that AE amplitudes start to trend down over the time of accelerated wear.

Book excerpt: Exploration with impregnated diamond drill bits is the key operation in the mining and mineral industry. Demand for deep exploration drilling is significantly increased recently due to the rapid depletion of near surface mineral deposits globally. One of the main problems encountered during drilling operation is to infer bit wear in great depth remotely as the optimal performance of the drill still relies heavily on operator experience. This paper aims to assess the feasibility of Acoustic Emission (AE) monitoring of the impregnated diamond drilling process and establish relationships between AE and diamond drill bit wear, as well as establishing AE relationships with various drilling parameters. A full drill rig, Echidna drill apparatus, simulating field exploration diamond drilling on a small scale, were used to monitor AE during rock bit interaction. AE sensors were attached to both the drill and the rock to record acoustics being emitted during drilling. Initial tests on the Echidna drill involved stepping down the depth of cut from 130μm to 0μm, whilst keeping revolutions per meter (RPM) constant. Secondary tests performed on the Echidna drill involved accelerating the wear rate of the drill bit via two different types of wear in highly abrasive rock. Based on step test results, a series of linear relationships were developed which are capable of estimating the depth of cut, force by simply using time spectrum of the AE signals. Wear tests also showed that AE amplitudes start to trend down over the time of accelerated wear.

Book excerpt: During a recent detailed study, AE signals generated from rock specimens stressed to failure during uniaxial compressive tests were monitored and recorded on a SONY (AV-3650) videocorder. Various AE parameters, including: amplitude, pulse width, ringdown count, rms level, etc..., were then extracted during videocorder playback. The data acquisition and processing techniques used are discussed in this paper. Amplitude distribution analysis was carried out by dividing the AE events into four categories according to their maximum amplitude. This analysis provides a better appreciation of the overall deformation process.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to give a theoretical and practical introduction to seismic-while-drilling by using the drill-bit noise. This recent technology offers important products for geophysical control of drilling. It involves aspects typical of borehole seismics and of the drilling control surveying, hitherto the sole domain of mudlogging. For aspects related to the drill-bit source performance and borehole acoustics, the book attempts to provide a connection between experts working in geophysics and in drilling. There are different ways of thinking related to basic knowledge, operational procedures and precision in the observation of the physical quantities. The goal of the book is to help "build a bridge" between geophysicists involved in seismic while drilling - who may need to familiarize themselves with methods and procedures of drilling and drilling-rock mechanics - and drillers involved in geosteering and drilling of "smart wells" - who may have to familiarize themselves with seismic signals, wave resolution and radiation. For instance, an argument of common interest for drilling and seismic while drilling studies is the monitoring of the drill-string and bit vibrations. This volume contains a large number of real examples of SWD data analysis and applications.

Book excerpt: The Mogao Grottoes, a World Heritage Site in northwestern China, are located along the ancient caravan routes—collectively known as the Silk Road—that once linked China with the West. Founded by a Buddhist monk in the late fourth century, Mogao flourished over the following millennium, as monks, local rulers, and travelers commissioned hundreds of cave temples cut into a mile-long rock cliff and adorned them with vibrant murals. More than 490 decorated grottoes remain, containing thousands of sculptures and some 45,000 square meters of wall paintings, making Mogao one of the world’s most significant sites of Buddhist art. In 1997 the Getty Conservation Institute, which had been working with the Dunhuang Academy since 1989, began a case study using the Late–Tang dynasty Cave 85 to develop a methodology that would stabilize the deteriorating wall paintings. This abundantly illustrated volume is the definitive report on the project, which was completed in 2010.
