Book excerpt: It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 10th ACM Conference on Web Science, Amsterdam, 27-30 May 2018. This year's edition of the WebSci conference (WebSci'18) celebrates the ten year anniversary of the unique conference series where a multitude of disciplines converge in a creative and critical dialogue with the aim of understanding the Web and its impacts. The WebSci conference brings together researchers from multiple disciplines, like computer science, sociology, economics, information science, anthropology and psychology. Web Science is the emergent study of the people and technologies, applications, processes and practices that shape and are shaped by the World Wide Web. Web Science aims to draw together theories, methods and findings from across academic disciplines, and to collaborate with industry, business, government and civil society, to develop our knowledge and understanding of the Web: the largest socio-technical network in human history. This year we were very pleased to receive 113 submissions for the regular research track. Given the high quality of submissions, it has been a hard job to decide which of the contributions to select for the conference. We are grateful for the support of the Program Committee which consisted of 10 senior members and 35 regular members. All PC members worked hard, based on which we could select an interesting, varied, exciting program comprising 30 long and 15 short papers.

Download or read book ITiCSE '19 written by ITiCSE '19 and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-26 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This year, an ITiCSE record of 243 papers were submitted, of which 66 were accepted, giving an acceptance rate of 27%. Of these papers, just over half had an author from the United States or Canada, while European authors were represented in about 40% of the papers. We also accepted papers with authors from Central and South America, China, Japan, Australia, and the Middle East, giving us a truly international avour of current Computer Science Education research and practice. In addition to the Paper, Poster and Panel submissions, and Tips, Techniques and Courseware presentations, we have ten Working Groups investigating these topics: the pacing of introductory CS courses; fostering program comprehension for novice programmers; exploring pass rates in computing and other STEM subjects; sustainability issues in CS; diversity in the cybersecurity eld; data science education; benchmarking K-12 CS education in schools; developing a model curriculum for cloud computing; and designing better compiler error messages. The reports from these groups will be published in a companion volume to the nal proceedings, but we look forward to the working groups presenting preliminary findings during the conference.

Download or read book CompEd'19 written by Comped'19 and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-25 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the inaugural Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Global Computing Education Conference (CompEd). CompEd is sponsored by the ACM Special Interest Group for Computer Science Education (SIGCSE). When it was created by the SIGCSE Board, CompEd was envisioned as an opportunity for SIGCSE to reach new audiences around the globe. The proposal was inspired by the very positive reaction to temporarily moving one of our other conferences from Europe to South America. That experience made it clear to the SIGCSE Board that there were people who wanted to be a part of our community but who could not travel to any of our existing conferences on a regular basis. It was our hope that CompEd would serve those people by expanding and connecting the computing education community around the globe. It is difficult to imagine now, but the SIGCSE Board voted to create CompEd in February 2017. It is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the CompEd steering committee, organizing committee, and program committee that the conference has come together in the way that it has. I would especially like to thank steering committee chair Brett Becker, steering committee members Susan Rodger, Boots Cassel, Alison Clear, and Ming Zhang, conference co-chairs Ming Zhang and Bo Yang, and program co-chairs Steve Cooper and Andrew Luxton-Reilly. You have created something that was only a dream fifteen months ago, and I and the rest of the SIGCSE Board are in your debt. As an attendee at the first CompEd you have a unique experience ahead of you. The conference offers all of the things you would expect at a SIGCSE conference, including paper, poster, panel, and birds-of-a-feather sessions, a keynote, and working groups taking place prior to the start of the conference. CompEd is also co-located with the 2019 ACM Turing Celebration Conference (TURC), which gives you the opportunity to see talks by Turing laureates and other notable computer scientists. Finally the conference offers the opportunity to see the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, something that I highly recommend. I expect that we will all leave the conference energized about the experience. CompEd 2019 is the first conference of its kind for SIGCSE. The conference organizers and the SIGCSE Board would appreciate hearing what you enjoyed about it, and you should complete your evaluation so that we can use your ideas to shape the next conference in 2021. We anticipate that this will be the first of many wonderful experiences in computing education communities around the globe.
