The partners in the association are members of the fungus kingdom and most vascular plants. This manual explains procedures used by scientists who work with mycorrhizal fungi and roots in the laboratory, nursery, or natural and managed ecosystems. Many of the techniques use readily obtainable and relatively inexpensive equipment and chemicals.

This book was released on 2022-03-28 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds new light on the remote sensing of agriculture in South/Southeast Asian (S/SEA) countries. S/SEA countries are growing rapidly in terms of population, industrialization, and urbanization. One of the critical challenges in the region is food security. In S/SEA, although total food production and productivity have increased in previous decades, in recent years, the growth rate of food production has slowed down, mostly due to land use change, market forces and policy interventions. Further, the weather and climate systems in the region driven primarily by monsoon variability are resulting in droughts or flooding, impacting agricultural production. Therefore, monitoring crops, including agricultural land cover changes at regular intervals, is essential to predict and prepare for disruptions in the food supply in the S/SEA countries. The current book captures the latest research on the remote sensing of agricultural land cover/ land use changes, including mapping and monitoring crops, crop yields, biophysical parameter retrievals, multi-source data fusion for agricultural applications, and chapters on decision making and early warning systems for food security. The authors of this book are international experts in the field, and their contributions highlight the use of remote sensing and geospatial technologies for agricultural research and applications in South/Southeast Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research presented at the 7th International Conference on Disaster Management and Human Health: Reducing Risk, Improving Outcomes is contained in this volume. These contributions from academics and experts focus on public health, security and disaster management with the goal to assess the potential risk from various types of disaster and highlight ways to prevent or alleviate any damage. There is a need for academia and practitioners to exchange knowledge and experience on the way to handle the increasing risk of natural and human-made disasters. Recent major earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, floods and other natural phenomena have resulted in huge losses in terms of human life and property destruction. A new range of human-made disasters have afflicted humanity in modern times; terrorist activities have been added to more classical disasters such as those due to the failure of industrial installations for instance. It is important to understand the nature of these global risks to be able to develop strategies to prepare for these events and plan effective responses in terms of disaster management and the associated human health impacts. The papers included in this volume cover such topics as Disaster analysis; Disaster monitoring and mitigation; Emergency preparedness; Risk mitigation; Security decision making; Community recovery and resilience; Socio-economic issues; Public health risk; Disaster psychology; Human factors; Multi-hazard risk assessment; Crisis and communication; Learning from disasters; Terrorism and man-made disasters; Business and service continuity; Disaster risk reduction (DRR); New technologies and tools for disaster evaluation; Disaster governance policies; Environmental issues; Recovery and restoration; Disaster modelling; Surveillance and remote sensing; Disaster response.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High population growth is a problem in most developing countries, and projections for many countries are that the increased demand for food will outstrip the capacity of the land to produce that food. Papua New Guinea (PNG) has high population growth, however the area under agricultural production has remained stable, and land use has intensified. There is a trend towards more continuous cropping systems that is linked to high population densities--as the population increases, the demand for food and cash crops increases. Thus, the need to identify promising management practices to expand both food and cash crops, while sustaining soil fertility, is becoming increasingly important for PNG. This report summarises the results from a pilot study on soil fertility management, and reviews sweetpotato-based cropping systems in the highlands of PNG. It also describes the lessons learnt from survey methodologies used to assess the socioeconomic and biophysical constraints to sweetpotato production in this area. Case studies from similar surveys done in Nigeria and northern New South Wales, Australia, are included as examples.
