This book was released on 2010-12-19 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2000 world leaders established the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a set of global targets seeking to reduce poverty and promote development. The Department for International Development (DFID) has made the MDGs a central strategic objective. There has been notable progress towards reaching several Goals, including those focusing on child mortality and primary education. However, the Goals seeking improved gender equality and maternal health, amongst others, are seriously off-track. This report focuses on a UN Summit (20-22 September 2010) held to review progress achieving MDGs five years before the 2015 deadline. Achievement of the Goals depends on two factors namely it is vital that both donor and developing countries fulfil their promises - there are a number of off track goals demonstrates that much greater commitment is needed by a number of developing country governments. Secondly, multilateral organisations, notably the UN, must work as efficiently as possible to support improved health, education and other basic services in developing countries. The DFID must continue to press for better co-ordination and the amount of funding it provides should be related to success in achieving improvements. The DFID should also engage in planning for a new international framework to replace the MDGs after 2015. A review of the effectiveness of the MDGs should be carried out to assess whether this framework represents the best approach to facilitating development before a new set of targets is agreed for the post-2015 framework. This new framework shouldinclude a greater focus on: reaching the most vulnerable people and the very poorest; giving higher priority to climate change, biodiversity and the environment; and addressing population growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report analyses the ways in which unpaid care work is recognised and organised, the extent and quality of care jobs and their impact on the well-being of individuals and society. A key focus of this report is the persistent gender inequalities in households and the labour market, which are inextricably linked with care work. These gender inequalities must be overcome to make care work decent and to ensure a future of decent work for both women and men. The report contains a wealth of original data drawn from over 90 countries and details transformative policy measures in five main areas: care, macroeconomics, labour, social protection and migration. It also presents projections on the potential for decent care job creation offered by remedying current care work deficits and meeting the related targets of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together results of studies on progresses and challenges in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Lesotho, Kenya, Botswana, Madagascar, Tanzania, Ghana, Uganda and Nigeria. The authors focus on selected goals as cases; and the book presents resulting lessons that can inform the post-2015 development agenda. The studies are against the background that in September 2000, world leaders from 189 countries, including 147 Heads of State, gathered at the United Nations General Assembly to consider the challenges of the new millennium. They adopted the Millennium Declaration, which set out a vision for inclusive and sustainable globalization: UN 2000 (A/RES/55/2). The leaders pledged to work towards ensuring that conditions of extreme poverty are eradicated wherever they existed. To realise this declaration, the UN established eight MDGs to be achieved by 2015. The goals were broken down into 18 concrete targets and 48 indicators to track progresses in implementation. For the years lost 2000, countries in sub-Saharan Africa have been striving to achieve the goals. So far, some have achieved some of the goals, and the results toward the rest of the goals are also by and large positive, though off-target.

While a number of nations are successful in optimizing a socio-economic welfare function, others are woefully falling short of the optimal frontier. Diagnostics for a Globalized World proposes a reformulation of the inherited theory of economic and social policy (codified in the 1950s by Jan Tinbergen) to find a diagnostic tool in measuring the effectiveness of economic and social policy. Using a logarithmic adaptation of data envelopment analysis, the authors explain how to rank the attainment of nations of multidimensional goals such as those expressed by the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and upcoming Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Nine SDGs are classified on the basis of the mapping exercise as proceeding from the MDGs, and eight as new Goals.
