Book excerpt: "Originally compiled and written by North Korean defector and author Lim Il, this English-language edition, thoroughly annotated by Dr. Adam Zulawnik, is a fascinating collection of thirty-four interviews with highly prominent North Korean defectors residing in South Korea, ranging from religious figures, to artists, politicians, North Korea experts, and even divers and subway train operators. The 34 interviews herein are listed chronologically according to their date of arrival to South Korea and span almost 70 years. The book also includes six special columns addressing key issues pertaining to North Korean defectors and their lives in South Korea, such as the relationship between North Korean defectors and their South Korean counterparts (South Korean defectors to North Korea), nomenclature (how North Korean defectors have been referred to in South Korean society over time), arrival and settlement provisions from the South Korean government, the nuanced difference between defectors, defector-residents, and the displaced, North Korean defector-residents and their position in South Korean politics, and a short biography of five notable North Korean defector-residents who were not interviewed. The book is a valuable testament to North Korean defector-residents and unique in that it provides a candid account of each individual's experience. It will prove to be especially useful to students and scholars seeking to understand the complex dynamics of North Korean society and the status of exiles in South Korea, and a vital resource for students of Korean Studies"--

Book excerpt: Compañeras is the untold story of women's involvement in the Zapatista movement, the indigenous rebellion that has inspired grassroots activists around the world for over two decades. Gathered here are the stories of grandmothers, mothers, and daughters who became guerilla insurgents and political leaders, educators and healers—who worked collectively to construct a new society of dignity and justice. Compañeras shows us how, after centuries of oppression, a few voices of dissent became a force of thousands, how a woman once confined to her kitchen rose to conduct peace negotiations with the Mexican government, and how hundreds of women overcame ingrained hardships to strengthen their communities from within.

Book excerpt: Inspired by the legacy of radical and queer black feminists of the 1970s and ’80s, Revolutionary Mothering places marginalized mothers of color at the center of a world of necessary transformation. The challenges we face as movements working for racial, economic, reproductive, gender, and food justice, as well as anti-violence, anti-imperialist, and queer liberation are the same challenges that many mothers face every day. Oppressed mothers create a generous space for life in the face of life-threatening limits, activate a powerful vision of the future while navigating tangible concerns in the present, move beyond individual narratives of choice toward collective solutions, live for more than ourselves, and remain accountable to a future that we cannot always see. Revolutionary Mothering is a movement-shifting anthology committed to birthing new worlds, full of faith and hope for what we can raise up together. Contributors include June Jordan, Malkia A. Cyril, Esteli Juarez, Cynthia Dewi Oka, Fabiola Sandoval, Sumayyah Talibah, Victoria Law, Tara Villalba, Lola Mondragón, Christy NaMee Eriksen, Norma Angelica Marrun, Vivian Chin, Rachel Broadwater, Autumn Brown, Layne Russell, Noemi Martinez, Katie Kaput, alba onofrio, Gabriela Sandoval, Cheryl Boyce Taylor, Ariel Gore, Claire Barrera, Lisa Factora-Borchers, Fabielle Georges, H. Book excerpt: In Japan, it is well-known that there are mysterious documents that may be related to modern UFO phenomena. It is certain that they were written about two hundred years ago, long before 1947 (when the first UFO sighting was recorded). These documents state the details of an incident that occurred on a Japanese beach in 1803 and the description provided resembles modern UFO close encounters of the third kind. In most of the documents, a disk-shaped ship called Utsuro-bune (UFO?), a strange woman speaking an unknown language (alien?) and strange characters (alien hieroglyphs?) are depicted. At present, a total of twelve documents detailing the same incident have been found which is an indicator of the validity of the incident, given the high number. If the UFO-like craft described in the documents based on actual observations of UFOs in Japan two hundred years ago is verified, the documents can be considered as strong evidence of the existence of UFOs.From the viewpoint of folklore, the incident has been considered as part of the legends of Utsuro-bune (hollow ship in English) for a long time; these legends have been passed down in Japan, and Utsuro-bune is a ship based on the human imagination. However, following the arrival of UFO fever from the USA in 1947, a mystery emerged around how the disk-shaped ship depicted in the documents resembles a UFO to such an extent. Can it be considered the long-waited hard evidence of the existence of UFOs? This intriguing story has been known as the Utsuro-bune UFO legend in Japan. The purpose of this book is to document an exhaustive study of this Utsuro-bune UFO legend from scientific, historical, and folkloric viewpoints. How did the Japanese author of the documents in the Edo Period, which was two hundred years ago, imagine UFO-like shapes when the visual characteristics of a modern UFO could not possibly have been known at that time? Were the pictures of the Utsuro-bune UFO drawn based on an actual UFO sighting dating back to the Edo Period? This book will be the first, the only, and the most complete documentation of this mystery; it is available in English and employs principles of both science and reason. The reader will be fascinated by the bizarre circumstances of this mystery which can be summarized by the following question: "Why are ships similar to UFOs depicted in the ancient literature of the Edo Period, which took place two hundred years ago, in Japan?

Book excerpt: "There are no lines in nature; lines are always the expression of human actions, perception and design. Lines divide or connect; they are sometimes static and sometimes gestural and full of movement; they represent and create forms in space and time. The essays in this volume elucidate the semantic and conceptual depth of the line in European, Asian and Islamic cultures and reveal the continuity and transformation of the line over the course of centuries as a constitutive element in architecture, art and writing and as a medium of expression in choreography and scientific and technological fields"--Publisher's website.
