Book excerpt: Excerpt from Accounting Theory and Practice: A First Year Text The present volume gives the scope of the work in accounting offered in the first year of the School of Busi ness of Columbia University, and is an effort to mark out and define the portion Of the whole subject which can be handled effectively in one year's time. There is a real demand for a one-year course which will treat the subject in a general way and give a brief view of the entire field. The author believes, however, that accounting in its broadest sense is just beginning to receive the consideration which it deserves and that more and more is recognition being given to the necessity of a thorough knowledge of its principles and their application, for effec tive work in all lines of business activity. Accordingly, the material in this first volume is not presented to meet the demand of the casual reader or of the student seeking a bird's-eye view of the entire field, since much of the sub jcet matter is reserved for presentation in a second volume which the author hopes to have ready in the course of another year. In that will be taken up a more detailed treatment of the balance sheet in connection with its prob lem of valuation; various aspects of the corporation and of the income statement, not adequately handled in this vol ume; together with some miscellaneous topics, including forms of special statements, branch accounting, sinking funds, and other similar subjects. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Accounting Theory and Practice, Vol. 3 The present volume completes the series of texts covering the general field of accounting which the author planned at the time of the appearance of his first volume. The special subjects of cost accounting and auditing, although essential links in the training for professional accounting, have not been given a place in this series, which is limited to the general field. Volumes I and II present the fundamental principles on which the science rests and give a thorough treatment of its larger problems, particularly those closely related to the fields of finance, business organization and management, and law. As the author views the problem of accountancy education, there remains for sound training in this general field, a need for the student to see how the principles which he has been studying as related to ideal abstract situations, are applied to actual conditions. Business organizations may be divided into several large groups or types, the chief of which are: (1) financial institutions, (2) manufacturing businesses, (3) trading businesses, (4) those dealing in or concerned with services, professional and other, and (5) the organizations for carrying on the business functions of governmental bodies, state, county, municipal, etc. For the proper rounding out of his training in accounting, the student needs an understanding of the application of general accounting principles, not only to these main groups or types of business, but at least to a few of the individual units comprising each type. Throughout the volumes of the series the view has been emphasized that merely theoretic principles held in abstraction and not submitted to the testing of use in practice have little or no place in the scheme of education for a calling as intensely practical as accounting. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Accounting Theory and Practice, Vol. 3: A Comprehensive Statement of Accounting, Principles and Methods, Illustrated, by Modern Forms and Problems Although history is silent regarding the origin of accountancy, we are, nevertheless, safe in assuming that, at least in its rudest form, it must have come into existence at a very early period. In all probability, the human instinct to exchange something in one's possession for something belonging to another, is responsible for the invention of some system of account-keeping. Wherever such exchange or barter required more than the mere handing over of one article in exchange for another, e.g., when it required an adjustment of valuations, a calculation was necessary to enable the carrying out of the exchange to the satisfaction of both parties. That the accountancy profession can claim antiquity is made evident in the relics of the earliest civilizations. Research among the ruins of ancient Babylon has brought to light a large number of tablets, many of which are as old as 2500 B. C., containing complete records of commercial transactions. It is even suggested that the Phœnicians evolved the alphabet for the purpose of bookkeeping, in order that they might be able to express the debits and credits and so avoid being cheated. It presupposes a knowledge of debit and credit, and from this point con ducts the serious student through the field of accounting. Elementary bookkeeping is reviewed; Single Entry is studied, compared with, and changed to, Double Entry; accounting is differentiated from bookkeeping, and is itself defined; and then the applications Of accounting to book keeping are shown and applied. The complete set Of books which accompanies the last chapter is intended to afford practice in modern practical accounting. With these four chapters as a basis, the student is introduced, in succession, to partnership and to corporation accounting, the latter including consolidations. The preparation Of final state ments, according to the most approved modern practice, is the subject of two full chapters. An intervening one deals with the difficult subjects of depreciation, reserves, sink ing fund and investment accounting. Chapters on the accounts of non-trading concerns, statements Of' affairs and deficiency accounts, and realiza tion and liquidation, are also included. Then there have been incorporated two chapters on cost accounts, and finally a chapter on auditing. Supplementary exercises on all chapters, together with sample examination papers from various sources, have been furnished for additional practice. Many of these terms are employed somewhat loosely, and this is most undesirable in a science which is an important branch of applied mathematics. A large number of examples and exercises have been given, together with the solutions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Accounting Theory and Practic, Vol. 1: A Text-Book for Colleges and Schools of Business Administration The basic soundness of the method of instruction in Accounting developed in this book has received substantial demonstration throughout five years of test. The Introduction to the first edition contained the following statement regarding the development of the subject: "The method of approach as given in this volume is perhaps not orthodox but it has seemed that the student, given an understanding of the purpose which the accounting records are to serve, will be able to make that record with real intelligence instead of by rule-of-thumb. Accordingly, the balance sheet and the profit and loss statement are presented first, as the goal towards which all record-keeping looks. The student is taught to analyze business facts and conditions from the very beginning. He is then led, step by step, through the use of non-technical terms, into the ledger, where he sees the way in which the data which he has been using are summarized. The books of original entry are next explained, and the method by which the information is classified as it is brought onto the books. Finally, the business papers and documents which constitute the source of all entries are described." To quote again from the original Introduction: "The subject is developed in such a way that the student knowing something of bookkeeping has little or no advantage over the one without such knowledge. This book has been written for the use of students in our colleges and universities desiring a first course in accounting. It gives the scope of the work in accounting offered in the first year of the School of Business of Columbia University." The method then advocated and used in a few institutions has become quite generally accepted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
