Book excerpt: The recent financial crisis has sparked debates surrounding the nature and role of accounting in informing capital markets and regulatory bodies about the financial performance and position of a firm. These debates have drawn attention to the broader implications of accounting for the economy and society. Accounting and Business Economics brings together leading international scholars to examine the current state of accounting theory and its fundamental connection with the economics and finance of firms, viewing the business entity from not only accounting, but also national, economic, social, political, juridical, anthropological, and moral points of view.

Book excerpt: Over the life of the Comparative International Governmental Accounting Research (CIGAR) network, there has been unprecedented global interest in public sector accounting reforms. Hence the importance given to taking stock of reforms implementation. This book gathers a set of papers, many of them in comparative international perspective, on several topics relating to Public Sector Accounting, both at Central and Local Government levels. Authors from several countries around the world present and discuss here issues such as: financial reporting, information users and accountability; performance measurement and management accounting; national and international standards; reform processes; budgeting, auditing and controlling systems; efficiency and service charters; contingent liabilities; and consolidated accounts. Several of these are also analysed within the context of developing countries. Subsequently, the book offers a compilation of the most important topics actually being discussed in the Public Sector Accounting field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an unusual and important longitudinal study of the complexities of getting things done in large corporations. It is based on interviews with Swedish industrial leaders, interviewed in 1990, and thirty years later in 2020. These industrialists and business leaders reached their top positions in major corporations through a series of learning events, mapping their approach to complexities today. The experiential background typically is internationalized business-to-business (including SKF, Scania, Atlas Copco, Stora Enso), other industries are represented as well, including banks (Handelsbanken), shipping (Stena Line), airlines (SAS), finance, and consumer goods (Volvo Cars). About 675 such learning events were analyzed. The main finding is that they deal with “surprising” situations; being “thrown” into an unfamiliar context. Many of the events analysed focus on periods when uncertainty was at maximum, and the executives needed to construct a credible explanation to why expectations were not met. At that point, what should be done? And how best to persuade others of the merits of the proposed actions? Going into action in these “surprising situations”, means accepting an unknown risk of failure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious book develops an integrative understanding of business transparency spanning business disciplines. It synthesizes the vast, siloed research on business transparency to develop and provide an integrative view for business researchers and scholars, pointing out research opportunities in the process. The first chapter introduces business transparency with a brief historical overview, followed by its key conceptualizations and challenges. Chapters 2 through 5 take up four conceptually distinct views of transparency in depth: transparency as strategic disclosure (Chapter 2), transparency as a business tactic (Chapter 3), transparency as organizational culture (Chapter 4) and transparency as a managerial virtue (Chapter 5). Chapter 6 explores transparency’s infeasibility challenge through the chasm between disclosure and understanding and considers its implications. The final chapter provides an integrative framework of business transparency. This book will be useful to business academics who are interested in transparency and associated concepts.
