This book was released on 2017 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California's alternative education options for youth vulnerable to dropping out of school have been established at different historical points and for different student age and target populations. For purposes of this brief, "alternative school" is defined as belonging to one of six legislatively authorized types of public (non-charter) schools that meet the definitions of the Alternative School Accountability Model (ASAM). These schools are operated by different local agencies--school districts, county school boards, or juvenile justice agencies and the courts--and governed by overlapping and sometimes legislatively superseded or otherwise inoperative portions of the state Education Code. Currently, the California Department of Education (CDE) is considering the development of a new accountability system for alternative schools that aligns with Local Control Accountability Plans (LCAP) for all public schools. This report considers how other states are approaching accountability for alternative schools, focusing attention on Colorado, Kentucky, New York, North Carolina, New Jersey, Oregon, and Wisconsin. These states all use multiple indicators including school-level performance on state tests as well as indicators of enrollment, attendance, completion, and graduation in their accountability systems. These state systems have two key features in common: (1) They allow alternative schools to select the indicators that local school leaders believe are most appropriate for their education program or school; and (2) These states hold schools accountable for improvement and/or performance trends rather than to absolute performance standards. In developing an accountability system for California's alternative schools, the State Board of Education (SBE) may consider indicators or metrics adopted by other states that align with or can be nested within the design of the evolving statewide system for all public schools. This report reviews that evolving state accountability system as it may inform options for alternative schools. The report concludes with a discussion of challenges and opportunities that alternative schools face.

Download or read book Innovations in Arizona's Accountability Policies and Frameworks for Alternative Schools written by Amy Schlessman and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents Arizona's innovations in academic accountability policy and academic accountability frameworks for alternative schools. A timeline of statutes and regulations including the State Board of Education approved alternative school definition provides Arizona's context for alternative school accountability policy and frameworks. Arizona is relatively unique with its development of two state-level accountability frameworks for alternative schools. In addition to presentation of the Arizona Department of Education's (ADE) Alternative A-F model and the Arizona State Board for Charter Schools (ASBCS) Academic Framework for Alternative Schools, this study offers a comparison of the two systems. Bar graphs present two years, fiscal years 2012 and 2013, of accountability results. Correlation coefficients for both years show a strong correlation between ADE's Alternative A-F and ASBCS' Academic Framework. This analysis provides empirical findings that will help further discussion of these innovations in policies and frameworks leading to more appropriate accountability for alternative education campuses. Book Synopsis No Child Left Behind? by : Paul E. Peterson
Download or read book No Child Left Behind? written by Paul E. Peterson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2003-11-18 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2002 No Child Left Behind Act is the most important legislation in American education since the 1960s. The law requires states to put into place a set of standards together with a comprehensive testing plan designed to ensure these standards are met. Students at schools that fail to meet those standards may leave for other schools, and schools not progressing adequately become subject to reorganization. The significance of the law lies less with federal dollar contributions than with the direction it gives to federal, state, and local school spending. It helps codify the movement toward common standards and school accountability. Yet NCLB will not transform American schools overnight. The first scholarly assessment of the new legislation, No Child Left Behind? breaks new ground in the ongoing debate over accountability. Contributors examine the law's origins, the political and social forces that gave it shape, the potential issues that will surface with its implementation, and finally, the law's likely consequences for American education.
Book Synopsis Testing, Teaching, and Learning by : National Research Council
Download or read book Testing, Teaching, and Learning written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-10-06 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State education departments and school districts face an important challenge in implementing a new law that requires disadvantaged students to be held to the same standards as other students. The new requirements come from provisions of the 1994 reauthorization of Title I, the largest federal effort in precollegiate education, which provides aid to "level the field" for disadvantaged students. Testing, Teaching, and Learning is written to help states and school districts comply with the new law, offering guidance for designing and implementing assessment and accountability systems. This book examines standards-based education reform and reviews the research on student assessment, focusing on the needs of disadvantaged students covered by Title I. With examples of states and districts that have track records in new systems, the committee develops a practical "decision framework" for education officials. The book explores how best to design assessment and accountability systems that support high levels of student learning and to work toward continuous improvement. Testing, Teaching, and Learning will be an important tool for all involved in educating disadvantaged studentsâ€"state and local administrators and classroom teachers.

Book Synopsis Grading Education by : Richard Rothstein
Download or read book Grading Education written by Richard Rothstein and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2008-12-14 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yes, we should hold public schools accountable for effectively spending the vast funds with which they have been entrusted. But accountability policies like No Child Left Behind, based exclusively on math and reading test scores, have narrowed the curriculum, misidentified both failing and successful schools, and established irresponsible expectations for what schools can accomplish. Instead of just grading progress in one or two narrow subjects, we should hold schools accountable for the broad outcomes we expect from public education —basic knowledge and skills, critical thinking, an appreciation of the arts, physical and emotional health, and preparation for skilled employment —and then develop the means to measure and ensure schools’ success in achieving them. Grading Education describes a new kind of accountability plan for public education, one that relies on higher-quality testing, focuses on professional evaluation, and builds on capacities we already possess. This important resource: Describes the design of an alternative accountability system that would not corrupt education as does NCLB and its state testing systems Explains the original design of NAEP in the 1960s, and shows why it should be revived. Defines the broad goals of education, beyond math and reading test scores, and reports on surveys to confirm public and governmental support for such goals. Relates these broad goals of education to the desire for accountability in education.
