Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of word processing on student's written language conventions. The author ran this study with two sixth-grade language arts classes. One class was asked to word process all writing assignments. The other class was required to hand write their writing assignments. Based on Morphy and Graham's (2012) meta-analysis, the researcher predicted that students who word process their writing assignments will display greater quality and quantity in their writings. After analyzing an initial writing sample, the teacher asked for three additional samples which were scored for 1) a count of total words written and 2) correct word sequences. Students in the test group also were given mini-lessons on word processing. The word processing class performed slightly better than the handwriting class, and students also learned useful skills such as keyboarding, computer skills, document formatting, and file transfer. The author resolved to implement word processing for all classes in the future.

Book excerpt: As the integration of computer technology into our composition curriculum looms closer to becoming a permanent fixture, we must consider the implications for our students. Their access to computer technology is key to their academic success, but we must recognize that access is much more complicated than simply the presence or absence of technology and the ability or inability to make use of that technology. Within the university community, it is vital that we understand our students' culture as it relates to their skill level and experiences with technology so that we do not continue to replicate educational inequities and reinforce class stratifications. At the same time, we must consider how we can provide all students with a writing instruction environment that best meets their current needs. The research I have conducted for this project combines a variety of research methods including anecdotal evidence, surveys, and interviews in order to provide a general picture of this institution's first-year student population as well as more specific profiles to illustrate the type of individuals who may make up our classrooms. In complicating the nature of access, I illustrate that meeting our students' needs concerning technology requires a scale that encompasses a wide range of needs and/or limitations rather the black and white solution of simply providing computers for student use. Students are subject to specific conditions of access which include the following: software compatible with the school's, necessary hardware such as a printer and disk drives, Internet access, time for unrestricted exploration of computer and Internet, and considerable exposure to technology while young. I also illustrate that the level of access a student has to technology affects that student's relationship to the technology when writing and revising. I conclude with a discussion of student agency in relation to technology when composing.
