Book excerpt: The centerpiece of the thesis is the search for muon neutrino to electron neutrino oscillations which would indicate a non-zero mixing angle between the first and third neutrino generations (θ13), currently the “holy grail” of neutrino physics. The optimal extraction of the electron neutrino oscillation signal is based on the novel “library event matching” (LEM) method which Ochoa developed and implemented together with colleagues at Caltech and at Cambridge, which improves MINOS’ (Main Injector Neutrino Oscillator Search) reach for establishing an oscillation signal over any other method. LEM will now be the basis for MINOS’ final results, and will likely keep MINOS at the forefront of this field until it completes its data taking in 2011. Ochoa and his colleagues also developed the successful plan to run MINOS with a beam tuned for antineutrinos, to make a sensitive test of CPT symmetry by comparing the inter-generational mass splitting for neutrinos and antineutrinos. Ochoa’s in-depth, creative approach to the solution of a variety of complex experimental problems is an outstanding example for graduate students and longtime practitioners of experimental physics alike. Some of the most exciting results in this field to emerge in the near future may find their foundations in this thesis.

The objective of the meeting was to bring together practitioners of two different approaches to the unification of the fundamental par ticle interactions: supersymmetry and supergravity on the one hand, and grand unified gauge theories on the other hand. The hope was that exposure to each others' ideas and problems would at least aid mutual comprehension, and might start people thinking how to develop a synthesis of the two approaches which could avoid their individual shortcomings. It is not clear to us how successful the conference was in achieving these objectives. On the one hand many important ad vances in supersymmetric theories were reported which were primarily of a technical nature, while some interesting attempts to probe the phenomenological consequences of supersymmetry and supergravity were also presented. On the other hand there was considerable in terest in phenomenological aspects of grand unified theories such as proton decay, neutrino masses and oscillations, and links with cosmology. There was also some work on model-building but rela tively few purely technical advances. A few speakers tried to build bridges between the formalism of supersymmetry or supergravity and the phenomenologically successful gauge theories of elementary par ticle interactions.

Book excerpt: This workshop held at the New England Center provided a timely opportunity for over 100 participants to gather in a unique environment and discuss the present status of the unification of strong and electroweak forces. One reason for the timeliness was perhaps that experiments of the seventies had already lent confirmation to the separate theories of strong and of electroweak forces, so that for the eighties it now seems especially compelling to attempt the grand unification of these two forces. Also, the planned experiments to search for proton decay and the new experiments which are suggestive, though not yet conclusive, of non-zero neutrino rest masses add further stimulus to the theory. Thus, the workshop provided an ideal forum for exchange of ideas amongst active physicists. The presentations at the workshop covered the present status of both theory and experiment with a strong interplay. Also, there were presentations from the discipline of astrophysics which is becoming very intertwined with that of high-energy physics especially when in the latter one is addressing energies and temperatures that were extant only in the first nanosecond of the universe. On experiment, we heard a comprehensive coverage of the four United States proton decay experiments. The Brookhaven-Irvine-Michigan experiment in the Morton Salt Mine at Fairport Harbor, Ohio was discussed by LARRY SULAK, while DAVID WINN talked on the Harvard-Purdue-Wisconsin effort in the Silver King Mine, Utah. MARVIN MARSHAK and RICHARD STEINBERG described respectively the Soudan Mine, Minnesot~ and the Homestake Mine, South Dakot~experiments.

Both the BELLE and the BABAR collaboration presented, among others, results for sin 2ß with much improved accuracy. Results from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, SNO, also deserve to be mentioned. The convincing evidence of solar neutrino oscillations had been presented by SNO prior to the conference; a full presentation was given at the conference. An incredibly precise measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is reported, a fresh result from the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Apart from these distinct physics highlights, there are also the first results from the new Tevatron run and from the relativistic heavy ion collider RHIC. Theorists write of our ever better understanding of the Standard Model and of what might lie beyond. Risky as it is to highlight only a couple of exciting subjects, it is merely meantto whet the appetite for further reading.
