Book excerpt: "The US Air Force began making changes to how they develop future squadron commanders and directors in 2018 to address concerns raised both by senior leaders and Airmen across the force. This change led to creating the Leader Development Course for Squadron Command (LDC) at Air University to focus on educating future leaders in human domain concepts. In 2020 the Squadron Officer School (the Air Force’s Basic Developmental Education [BDE] for all Captains) reviewed recent feedback from their graduates. It determined that their course would also benefit from integrating appropriate human domain concepts and worked with LDC to incorporate these into their offerings. This focused on the human domain concepts of Affective Domain Learning, Creating and Sustaining Psychological Safety, Building Resilience, and the Effective Use of Storytelling in those processes. Implementing this change required a new approach to the classroom and changes within the day-to-day operations within SOS to support the creation of Psychological Safety and the use of Storytelling by the instructors in an environment that fosters vulnerability and connections. Former LDC Instructors, who are currently Air War College Students, developed instruction for the instructors and coached them and SOS leadership on how to institutionalize these changes. The Air Force has an opportunity to leverage these former LDC Instructors more broadly by creating a Fellowship program that would allow them to focus full time for one year after learning how to instruct in LDC, to take that human domain knowledge and spread it across Air University. This would help spread the human domain knowledge more broadly across the force and assist the Air Force in retaining the Airmen we need to win in Great Power Competition."--Abstract.
