For the purposes of this study students were deemed to be nontraditional if they met one of the following characteristics: had delayed enrollment into postsecondary education; attended college part-time; worked full time; were financially independent for financial aid purposes; had dependents other than a spouse; were a single parent; and/or were a GED recipient (NCES, n.d.). The researcher sought to justify the importance of gleaning additional information regarding different components of the learning processes and academic experiences in which nontraditional students were engaged in throughout their educational endeavor. Furthermore, it was the researcher’s hope that this study would add to the body of research that already exists on the academic side of nontraditional students’ journey to a bachelor’s degree. This article specifically addresses the experiences of nontraditional students at a large public university in the South.

Although their needs, motivations, and level of engagement may vary from traditional students, the overall mission of an institution is to create successful, well rounded, holistically developed citizens. Institutions would greatly benefit from creating a space that helps develop these students through the use of a center. A nontraditional center would allow practitioners to combine many of the best practices that can aid students in their college experience. Nontraditional student enrollment trends are unlikely to change in the future and investing in a space that addresses the factors and barriers that can inhibit degree attainment will be necessary for success. This master's report will include the current enrollment trends of higher education, the differing characteristics of nontraditional and traditional students, history of nontraditional student enrollment, barriers and challenges to success, motivations to attend higher education, theoretical frameworks outlining success of nontraditional students and their adult identity development, how to promote nontraditional student success, and best practices that outline the characteristics of an ideal center.

Book excerpt: This quantitative ex post facto study examined the relationship between online programming and persistence for the nontraditional student population in higher education. Colleges and universities today are increasing their online course offerings in response to various pressures, including the pressure to continually innovate and integrate emerging technologies into their educational strategies; to promote access to a growing and diverse nontraditional population; and to address public appeals for accountability and improved graduate outcomes. However, there is little research on the outcomes that nontraditional students experience from online programming, such as degree attainment. In this study, the nontraditional student population is examined in terms of the differences among discrete sub-populations, using a traditionality model developed by Horn and Carroll (1996). Data from a national dataset obtained through the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the Beginning Postsecondary Students of 2004–2009 Longitudinal Study (BPS:04/09), were analyzed using logistic regression analysis. The study found that the composite nontraditional student group who attempted to complete all courses in academic year 2003-04 through online education was less likely to persist or attain a degree. In contrast, when examining the stratified nontraditional population, those students categorized as moderately nontraditional had a higher probability of persisting or attaining a degree when enrolled in a limited number of online courses. Results of this study would be particularly useful for educators and administrators interested in improving degree attainment by understanding the diversity of the nontraditional population and the potential role of online programming in their educational attainment.

Book excerpt: With an ever-increasing number of non-traditional students enrolling each year, the importance of ensuring their academic success falls primarily on the higher education institutions (HEIs). Each institution has its recipe for success and mostly consists of a student success office to assist when non-traditional students begin to show signs of markers for being at-risk. The reactive approach of waiting for students to show signs of struggle is missing the larger picture. The researcher utilized quantitative correlative and predictive correlative studies to determine if a direct correlation existed between non-traditional students’ perceived sense of belonging, which is at the core of inclusion, and their academic success. The Yorke Belongingness Survey in Higher Education (YBS) was given to both traditional and non-traditional undergraduate students at a rural private university in West Texas with several campuses nationwide within the United States. The class size was 298 students with a 48.3% return rate on survey (n=41 traditional, n=87 traditional). IBM SPSS statistical software was used to analyze the data. A t test and bivariate regression analysis were performed to determine a correlation between traditional and non-traditional students’ sense of belonging and academic success. The researcher was not able to reject the null hypotheses for the t test or the bivariate regression analysis due to a small effect size. The direct correlation between a higher sense of belonging and higher academic achievement could be a catalyst for programmatic reform.
