Book excerpt: Procrastination is a fascinating, highly complex human phenomenon for which the time has come for systematic theoretical and therapeutic effort. The present volume reflects this effort. It was a labor of love to read this scholarly, timely book-the first of its kind on the topic. It was especially encouraging to find that its authors are remarkably free of the phenomenon they have been investigating. One might have expected the opposite. It has often been argued that people select topics that trouble them and come to understand their problems better by studying or treating them in others. This does not appear to be true of the procrastination researchers represented in this book. I base this conclusion on two simple observations. First, the work is replete with recent refer ences and the book itself has reached the reader scarcely a year following its completion. Second, when one considers the remarkable pace of pro grammatic research by these contributors during the past decade, it is clear that they are at the healthy end of the procrastination continuum. The fascinating history of the term procrastination is well documented in this book. The term continues to conjure up contrasting, eloquent images-especially for poets. When Edward Young wrote in 1742, "Pro crastination is the Thief of Time," he was condemning the waste of the most precious of human commodities.

There is a large body of research investigating the reasons behind academic procrastination and why it continues to be a growing problem for students. Researchers want to understand why procrastination affects most college students when it is associated with many long-term negative implications. Following this problem, there have been several studies conducted in hopes of finding a solution to help students procrastinate less. While there has been research about possible treatment options, there has been a lack of research specifically targeting the important predictors of procrastination. In this study, we took data from 239 students from a large, private Christian university in Virginia. We conducted bivariate correlations and a multiple regression analysis between procrastination and “self” related variables such as self-efficacy, self-esteem, self-regulation, and self-forgiveness to assess which variables have the strongest correlation with procrastination to better create treatment plans. The findings of the study indicate that self-regulation had the strongest, unique inverse relationship with procrastination which can help future researchers specifically target that variable when creating treatment plans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on procrastination has grown exponentially in recent years. Studies have revealed that procrastination is an issue of self-regulation failure, and specifically misregulation of emotional states—not simply a time management problem as often presumed. This maladaptive coping strategy is a risk factor not only for poor mental health, but also poor physical health and other aspects of well-being. Procrastination, Health, and Well-Being brings together new and established researchers and theorists who make important connections between procrastination and health. The first section of the book provides an overview of current conceptualizations and philosophical issues in understanding how procrastination relates to health and well-being including a critical discussion of the assumptions and rationalizations that are inherent to procrastination. The next section of the book focuses on current theory and research highlighting the issues and implications of procrastination for physical health and health behaviors, while the third section presents current perspectives on the interrelationships between procrastination and psychological well-being. The volume concludes with an overview of potential areas for future research in the growing field of procrastination, health, and well-being. Reviews interdisciplinary research on procrastination Conceptualizes procrastination as an issue of self-regulation and maladaptive coping, not time management Identifies the public and private health implications of procrastination Explores the guilt and shame that often accompany procrastination Discusses temporal views of the stress and chronic health conditions associated with procrastination

Book excerpt: Research indicates that procrastination and test anxiety are significant issues influencing mental health and academic performance among university students. While numerous studies have explored the relationship between test anxiety and procrastination, as well as self-esteem and procrastination, few have investigated self-esteem as a potential moderator. This study aimed to examine the relationship between test anxiety (independent variable, IV) and procrastination (dependent variable, DV), with self-esteem considered as a moderator, among Lebanese undergraduate students. 186 Lebanese undergraduate students completed a demographic questionnaire, the Westside Test Anxiety Scale, the Academic Procrastination Scale, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Data analyses were conducted using multiple regression in SPSS. Results revealed that test anxiety and self-esteem acted as predictors of academic procrastination. However, contrary to expectations, the moderating role of self-esteem was not supported; instead, self-esteem emerged as a predictor rather than a moderator. Future studies should have a bigger sample size and be of a longitudinal design to yield more generalizability in findings.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately three months before starting college, 203 high school seniors completed a questionnaire consisting of the General Self-Efficacy Scale, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ) assessing their parents' parenting styles. The PAQ yielded scores on three parenting styles originally proposed by Baumrind (1971): authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive. Two weeks after starting college the students completed a questionnaire consisting of the Dundee Relocation Inventory assessing degree of homesickness and the Tests of Reactions and Adaptations to College assessing adjustment to college. Authoritarian parents had students with lower self-esteem and self-efficacy, while authoritative parents had students with higher self-esteem and self-efficacy. There was no relationship between permissiveness in parents and the students' levels of self-esteem or self-efficacy. Students higher in self-esteem and self-efficacy experienced less homesickness and showed better emotional and behavioral adjustment to college. Conversely, students lower in self-esteem and self-efficacy experienced more homesickness and had a more difficult adjustment to college. (Contains 6 figures.).
