Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rick Ironside, a young cop by profession and a heavy metal band member by passion, meanders down his own winding life path as he struggles to balance his social life on one hand and his private one on the other day in, day out. Scars left by a traumatic childhood and a broken family taint his view of inescapable social life, urging him to find solace in his own intimate reveries and in his sister. Ricks communal and professional life experiences speak for themselves, as if automated, while he strives to stay afloat and keep his instincts at bay. His inner struggles are given expression to through his own inner voice, taking shape as his intimate reveries that are at one and the same time an attempt to exorcise his own psychological demons as much as a signalling of a state of psychological deterioration, which, although being a mere internal whisper, howl fiercely in the readers ear. Things spiral out of control as Rick is suddenly summoned on to the scene of an ongoing crime. He is tossed into a living nightmare, where he is reunited with his sister, whose safety he takes upon himself to keep at all costs. Together, they must delve deeper into a darkly abysmal reality while reacquainting themselves with haunting memories from the past that manifest themselves as monstrosities. But whose is the other voice that appears in Ricks mind? Why is it vying with Rick in a struggle of wits? Can Rick stay sane and see himself and his sister out of this mess? Abstract Reality is an intimate story of a young man who toils with the different faces of his own reality as well as with the ghosts of his own past: a journey through the dark plains of the human psyche, weaving together memory and present external encounters and experiences into a dark veil that barely separates insanity from reality, if at all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prayers of an Abstract Reality is a book of poems about nature, abstract reality, and beliefs of the meaning of life. These rhythmic and vivid poems transport the reader to a time long ago and back to the present as the reader moves through apocalyptic events, winter storms, deep forests, and dark alleys with the author. Each poem is inspired by its own experience as the author strives to understand her own purpose and to live a life that respects humanity. Nature has a lot to say if only one can be quiet and listen. Amaria Crocoll spent the first twenty-one years of her life in upstate New York, keeping poetry journals since she could write at age five. She loves to read her poetry at open mic's and has performed in Mt. Shasta, California, and Albany, New York. She lives off-the-grid on the eastern slopes of Mt. Shasta at 4,600 feet. Amaria works as an archaeologist and spends most of her time outdoors in all weather conditions. She finds her inspiration mostly from nature and the questions all people ask themselves about the meaning of life.

Book excerpt: When you cast your throne above the stars and planets, and look down to the earth, it is then that man must ask himself if he wishes to follow or to be alone. And if he can then decide that he wants to become all that he can be, and he realizes that there is no beginning and there is no ending, that within itself is the beginning and the ending of life. And when you can transcend nothingness and achieve all things that resurges itself into creation, then creation becomes the void, the void consumes the reality, assembles creation, and moves towards potential and adapts the abilities to transcend thought into matter, matter becomes the perpetual motion of expanding awareness that the universe will recognize, transcending the chemical balance of science to recognize the ion exchange, creating a balance of ethric and matter that corresponds the course of evolution. On the following page you will find a more comprehensive explanation of this proverb. I hope that you enjoy, it was given to me from my instructor Soke Draconis.

Book excerpt: Only when it would rain...would the strange words coalesce themselves in the palm of my mouth, as if bee's buzzing their honeycombs into constructions existence. Persistance in - might the words had in their crushing momentum, crashing & flash flooding behind my lips like the 1st to be witnessed cataracts within the foothills of the mountain of the moon moving their magical silt into the fallopian nile in forever's pefect perpetuousity. Words building, tumbling and racing to the cliff of the forefront of my minds edge, until...I spoke...well, not so much I, but my body's vivid vocal chords strumming these potent hymms into existence. Later I would listen, and learn to capture these foreign words which would spill from me, and, so...truthfully this is all I would ever do...borne the quick pen to capture all I could hear of words spoken by the gilders of vibration - the profound poets of whom I cannot recollect having seen nor met. And...so...I am not a poet at all, is my truest confession to you. That these contents would float upon the winds of the world from this prison cell which I now sit, into the hands of but one whom can appreciate what lies within here is my prayer...and so, if you, my friend, are now reading these words, then my prayer is answered; and thus the truth of our connection lies evident. May truth & progressions prosperity forever kiss your path. I love you. Sincerely, Sayum Simunye

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Rothko’s classic book on artistic practice, ideals, and philosophy, now with an expanded introduction and an afterword by Makoto Fujimura Stored in a New York City warehouse for many years after the artist’s death, this extraordinary manuscript by Mark Rothko (1903–1970) was published to great acclaim in 2004. Probably written in 1940 or 1941, it contains Rothko’s ideas on the modern art world, art history, myth, beauty, the challenges of being an artist in society, the true nature of “American art,” and much more. In his introduction, illustrated with examples of Rothko’s work and pages from the manuscript, the artist’s son, Christopher Rothko, describes the discovery of the manuscript and the fascinating process of its initial publication. This edition includes discussion of Rothko’s “Scribble Book” (1932), his notes on teaching art to children, which has received renewed scholarly attention in recent years and provides clues to the genesis of Rothko’s thinking on pedagogy. In an afterword written for this edition, artist and author Makoto Fujimura reflects on how Rothko’s writings offer a “lifeboat” for “art world refugees” and a model for upholding artistic ideals. He considers the transcendent capacity of Rothko’s paintings to express pure ideas and the significance of the decade-long gap between The Artist’s Reality and Rothko’s mature paintings, during which the horrors of the Holocaust and the atomic bomb were unleashed upon the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What’s a cross-cultural discipler? It’s someone who crosses distinct cultural barriers—whether at home or abroad—to share the gospel and develop other effective Christian disciples. Think of the apostle Paul who was born into a Jewish heritage but preached in Greece and Rome among other places, or modern day missionaries, both short-term and long-term, who bravely go where God sends them despite the challenges of language and lifestyle differences when they get there. Called to Reach is a much-needed book of encouragement and training for cross-cultural disciplers new and old. Based on the authors’ dynamic experiences, it defines seven characteristics that best enhance the effectiveness of disciplers in overcoming cultural barriers and emphasizes the importance of personally growing in spiritual maturity with every outreach opportunity. Throughout, Jesus is presented as the model cross-cultural discipler, for He left the culture of Heaven to disciple us in our earthly culture.

Book excerpt: From acclaimed science author Jim Baggot, a lively, provocative, and “intellectually gratifying” critique of modern theoretical physics (The Economist). Where does one draw the line between solid science and fairy-tale physics? Jim Baggott argues that there is no observational or experimental evidence for many of the ideas of modern theoretical physics: super-symmetric particles, super strings, the multiverse, the holographic principle, or the anthropic cosmological principle. Unafraid to challenge prominent theorists, Baggott offers engaging portraits of many central figures of modern physics, including Stephen Hawking, Paul Davies, John D. Barrow, Brian Greene, and Leonard Susskind. Informed, comprehensive, and balanced, Farewell to Reality discusses the latest ideas about the nature of physical reality while clearly distinguishing between fact and fantasy, providing essential and entertaining reading for everyone interested in what we know and don’t know about the nature of the universe and reality itself.
