Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the treatment of linear and nonlinear (quasi-linear) abstract evolution equations by methods from the theory of strongly continuous semigroups. The theoretical part is accessible to graduate students with basic knowledge in functional analysis, with only some examples requiring more specialized knowledge from the spectral theory of linear, self-adjoint operators in Hilbert spaces. Emphasis is placed on equations of the hyperbolic type which are less often treated in the literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, fundamental methods of nonlinear analysis are introduced, discussed and illustrated in straightforward examples. Each method considered is motivated and explained in its general form, but presented in an abstract framework as comprehensively as possible. A large number of methods are applied to boundary value problems for both ordinary and partial differential equations. In this edition we have made minor revisions, added new material and organized the content slightly differently. In particular, we included evolutionary equations and differential equations on manifolds. The applications to partial differential equations follow every abstract framework of the method in question. The text is structured in two levels: a self-contained basic level and an advanced level - organized in appendices - for the more experienced reader. The last chapter contains more involved material and can be skipped by those new to the field. This book serves as both a textbook for graduate-level courses and a reference book for mathematicians, engineers and applied scientists

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of different topics related to the theory of partial differential equations. Selected exercises are included at the end of each chapter to prepare readers for the “research project for beginners” proposed at the end of the book. It is a valuable resource for advanced graduates and undergraduate students who are interested in specializing in this area. The book is organized in five parts: In Part 1 the authors review the basics and the mathematical prerequisites, presenting two of the most fundamental results in the theory of partial differential equations: the Cauchy-Kovalevskaja theorem and Holmgren's uniqueness theorem in its classical and abstract form. It also introduces the method of characteristics in detail and applies this method to the study of Burger's equation. Part 2 focuses on qualitative properties of solutions to basic partial differential equations, explaining the usual properties of solutions to elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic equations for the archetypes Laplace equation, heat equation and wave equation as well as the different features of each theory. It also discusses the notion of energy of solutions, a highly effective tool for the treatment of non-stationary or evolution models and shows how to define energies for different models. Part 3 demonstrates how phase space analysis and interpolation techniques are used to prove decay estimates for solutions on and away from the conjugate line. It also examines how terms of lower order (mass or dissipation) or additional regularity of the data may influence expected results. Part 4 addresses semilinear models with power type non-linearity of source and absorbing type in order to determine critical exponents: two well-known critical exponents, the Fujita exponent and the Strauss exponent come into play. Depending on concrete models these critical exponents divide the range of admissible powers in classes which make it possible to prove quite different qualitative properties of solutions, for example, the stability of the zero solution or blow-up behavior of local (in time) solutions. The last part features selected research projects and general background material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A massive transition of interest from solving linear partial differential equations to solving nonlinear ones has taken place during the last two or three decades. The availability of better computers has often made numerical experimentations progress faster than the theoretical understanding of nonlinear partial differential equations. The three most important nonlinear phenomena observed so far both experimentally and numerically, and studied theoretically in connection with such equations have been the solitons, shock waves and turbulence or chaotical processes. In many ways, these phenomena have presented increasing difficulties in the mentioned order. In particular, the latter two phenomena necessarily lead to nonclassical or generalized solutions for nonlinear partial differential equations.

This book was released on 1987-11-01 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last few years, several fairly systematic nonlinear theories of generalized solutions of rather arbitrary nonlinear partial differential equations have emerged. The aim of this volume is to offer the reader a sufficiently detailed introduction to two of these recent nonlinear theories which have so far contributed most to the study of generalized solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations, bringing the reader to the level of ongoing research. The essence of the two nonlinear theories presented in this volume is the observation that much of the mathematics concerning existence, uniqueness regularity, etc., of generalized solutions for nonlinear partial differential equations can be reduced to elementary calculus in Euclidean spaces, combined with elementary algebra in quotient rings of families of smooth functions on Euclidean spaces, all of that joined by certain asymptotic interpretations. In this way, one avoids the complexities and difficulties of the customary functional analytic methods which would involve sophisticated topologies on various function spaces. The result is a rather elementary yet powerful and far-reaching method which can, among others, give generalized solutions to linear and nonlinear partial differential equations previously unsolved or even unsolvable within distributions or hyperfunctions.Part 1 of the volume discusses the basic limitations of the linear theory of distributions when dealing with linear or nonlinear partial differential equations, particularly the impossibility and degeneracy results. Part 2 examines the way Colombeau constructs a nonlinear theory of generalized functions and then succeeds in proving quite impressive existence, uniqueness, regularity, etc., results concerning generalized solutions of large classes of linear and nonlinear partial differential equations. Finally, Part 3 is a short presentation of the nonlinear theory of Rosinger, showing its connections with Colombeau's theory, which it contains as a particular case.

Book excerpt: This book presents new accurate and efficient exponentially convergent methods for abstract differential equations with unbounded operator coefficients in Banach space. These methods are highly relevant for practical scientific computing since the equations under consideration can be seen as the meta-models of systems of ordinary differential equations (ODE) as well as of partial differential equations (PDEs) describing various applied problems. The framework of functional analysis allows one to obtain very general but at the same time transparent algorithms and mathematical results which then can be applied to mathematical models of the real world. The problem class includes initial value problems (IVP) for first order differential equations with constant and variable unbounded operator coefficients in a Banach space (the heat equation is a simple example), boundary value problems for the second order elliptic differential equation with an operator coefficient (e.g. the Laplace equation), IVPs for the second order strongly damped differential equation as well as exponentially convergent methods to IVPs for the first order nonlinear differential equation with unbounded operator coefficients. For researchers and students of numerical functional analysis, engineering and other sciences this book provides highly efficient algorithms for the numerical solution of differential equations and applied problems.

These functions have been used successfully in other areas, however. Elliptic Partial Differential Equations which model several processes in, for example, science and engineering, is one such field. This book, based on the author's course, gives an introduction to wavelet methods in general and then describes their application for the numerical solution of elliptic partial differential equations. Recently developed adaptive methods are also covered and each scheme is complemented with numerical results , exercises, and corresponding software.
