Book Synopsis Classes of Reaction Diffusion Equations with Nonlinear Boundary Conditions by : Jerome Goddard
Download or read book Classes of Reaction Diffusion Equations with Nonlinear Boundary Conditions written by Jerome Goddard and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study positive solutions to classes of steady state reaction diffusion equations that arise naturally in applications. In particular, we study models arising from population dynamics and combustion theory. The main focus of this dissertation is the mathematical analysis of a challenging new class of problems when a certain nonlinear boundary condition is satisfied. In particular, we establish existence and multiplicity results by making use of the Quadrature method, the method of sub-super solutions, and degree theory. The results in this dissertation provide a significant contribution towards the analysis of elliptic boundary value problems with nonlinear boundary conditions.
Book Synopsis Spatial Ecology via Reaction-Diffusion Equations by : Robert Stephen Cantrell
Download or read book Spatial Ecology via Reaction-Diffusion Equations written by Robert Stephen Cantrell and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2004-01-09 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many ecological phenomena may be modelled using apparently random processes involving space (and possibly time). Such phenomena are classified as spatial in their nature and include all aspects of pollution. This book addresses the problem of modelling spatial effects in ecology and population dynamics using reaction-diffusion models. * Rapidly expanding area of research for biologists and applied mathematicians * Provides a unified and coherent account of methods developed to study spatial ecology via reaction-diffusion models * Provides the reader with the tools needed to construct and interpret models * Offers specific applications of both the models and the methods * Authors have played a dominant role in the field for years Essential reading for graduate students and researchers working with spatial modelling from mathematics, statistics, ecology, geography and biology.

Download or read book Variational Methods Applied to Problems of Diffusion and Reaction written by William Strieder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is an account of some problems involving diffusion or diffusion with simultaneous reaction that can be illuminated by the use of variational principles. It was written during a period that included sabbatical leaves of one of us (W. S. ) at the University of Minnesota and the other (R. A. ) at the University of Cambridge and we are grateful to the Petroleum Research Fund for helping to support the former and the Guggenheim Foundation for making possible the latter. We would also like to thank Stephen Prager for getting us together in the first place and for showing how interesting and useful these methods can be. We have also benefitted from correspondence with Dr. A. M. Arthurs of the University of York and from the counsel of Dr. B. D. Coleman the general editor of this series. Table of Contents Chapter 1. Book Synopsis The Mathematics of Diffusion by : Wei-Ming Ni
Download or read book The Mathematics of Diffusion written by Wei-Ming Ni and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diffusion has been used extensively in many scientific disciplines to model a wide variety of phenomena. The Mathematics of Diffusion focuses on the qualitative properties of solutions to nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations and systems in connection with domain geometry, various boundary conditions, the mechanism of different diffusion rates, and the interaction between diffusion and spatial heterogeneity. The book systematically explores the interplay between different diffusion rates from the viewpoint of pattern formation, particularly Turing's diffusion-driven instability in both homogeneous and heterogeneous environments, and the roles of random diffusion, directed movements, and spatial heterogeneity in the classical Lotka-Volterra competition systems. Interspersed throughout the book are many simple, fundamental, and important open problems for readers to investigate.
