Book excerpt: The four propagation and three termination rate constants for the co-oxidation of cumene and Tetralin were determined at 30C and 56C. The secondary tetralylperoxy radical is about four times as reactive in hydrogen atom abstraction as the tertiary cumylperoxy radical. The rate constant for termination by reaction of a tetralylperoxy and a cumylperoxy radical has about one quarter of the value for termination by two tetralylperoxy radicals. Rate constants for the transfer of hydroperoxidic hydrogen to peroxy radicals were measured. This reaction exhibits an exceptionally large deuterium isotope effect. A possible explanation for the high value is suggested. The absolute rate constants at 30C. for hydrogen atom abstraction from toluene, ethylbenzene, cumene, and Tetralin by cumylperoxy, tetralylperoxy, and 9,10-dihydroanthracyl-9-peroxy radicals were measured. Book excerpt: Propagation and termination rate constants have been measured for autoxidation of benzyl phenyl ether, benzyl t-butyl ether, isopropyl ether, and benzyl ether. In the case of isopropyl ether and benzyl ether, estimates have been made of inter- and intramolecular propagation rate constants. Reactivities of acyclic ethers towards the t-butylperoxy radical have been determined. Rate constants for autoxidation of cyclic and acylic ethers have been summarized and compared. (Author).

Book excerpt: The equilibrium constants for the formation of some t-alkyl tetroxides and the rate constants for irreversible decay of the tetroxides have been measured by electron spin resonance spectroscopy at low temperatures. The equilibrium constant appears to be virtually independent of the nature of the alkyl groups. It is concluded that differences in the rate of constants for chain termination by t-peroxy radicals at ambient temperatures are due chiefly to the differences in rate constants for irreversible tetroxide decomposition. The activation parameters for this reaction indicate that it occurs by one bond rather than two bond scission. (Author).

In the self reaction of t-alkylperoxy radicals the ratio of the rates of alkoxy radical diffusion from the cage to combination in the cage is essentially independent of the size of the t-alkyl group. The 1,1-diphenylethoxy radical undergoes a 1,2-phenyl shift to yield the 1-phenyl-1-phenoxyethyl radical more rapidly that it undergoes beta-scission. (Author).

Book excerpt: The material presented in this book deals with basic mechanisms of free radical reactions in autoxidation processes and anitoxidant suppression of autoxidation of foods, biochemical models and biologi cal systems. Autoxidation in foods and corresponding biological effects are usually approached separately although recent mechanistic developments in the biochemistry and free radical chemistry of per oxides and their precursors tend to bring these two fields closer. Apparent ability of antioxidants in diets to reduce the inci dence of cancer has resulted in scrutiny of autoxidized products and their precursors as possibly toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic agents. Mechanisms of any of these effects have been barely ad dressed. Yet we know now that free radicals, as esoteric as they were only a few decades ago, are being discovered in foods, biochem ical and biological systems and do play a role in the above-mentioned causalities. The purpose of the Workshop and the resulting book was to give a unifying approach towards study of beneficial and deleterious effects of autoxidation, based on rigorous scientific considerations. It is our hope that the material presented in this book will not only provide a review of the "state of the art" of autoxidation and anti oxidants, but also reflect the interaction which occurred during the Workshop between workers using model sytems, and food and biological systems.

Book excerpt: Lipid oxidation in food systems is one of the most important factors which affect food quality, nutrition, safety, color and consumers' acceptance. The control of lipid oxidation remains an ongoing challenge as most foods constitute very complex matrices. Lipids are mostly incorporated as emulsions, and chemical reactions occur at various interfaces throughout the food matrix. Recently, incorporation of healthy lipids into food systems to deliver the desired nutrients is becoming more popular in the food industry. Many food ingredients contain a vast array of components, many of them unknown or constituting diverse or undefined molecular structures making the need in the food industry to develop effective approaches to mitigate lipid oxidation in food systems. This book provides recent perspectives aimed at a better understanding of lipid oxidation mechanisms and strategies to improve the oxidative stability of food systems. - Five chapters on naturally-derived antioxidants that focus on applications within food systems - Contributors include an international group of leading researchers from academic, industrial, and governmental entities - Discusses the oxidative stability of enzymatically produced oils and fats - Provides overviews on the complexities of lipid oxidation mechanisms, and emulsion systems most suseptible to rapid lipid oxidation

Book excerpt: Materials in a nuclear environment are exposed to extreme conditions of radiation, temperature and/or corrosion, and in many cases the combination of these makes the material behavior very different from conventional materials. This is evident for the four major technological challenges the nuclear technology domain is facing currently: (i) long-term operation of existing Generation II nuclear power plants, (ii) the design of the next generation reactors (Generation IV), (iii) the construction of the ITER fusion reactor in Cadarache (France), (iv) and the intermediate and final disposal of nuclear waste. In order to address these challenges, engineers and designers need to know the properties of a wide variety of materials under these conditions and to understand the underlying processes affecting changes in their behavior, in order to assess their performance and to determine the limits of operation. Comprehensive Nuclear Materials, Second Edition, Seven Volume Set provides broad ranging, validated summaries of all the major topics in the field of nuclear material research for fission as well as fusion reactor systems. Attention is given to the fundamental scientific aspects of nuclear materials: fuel and structural materials for fission reactors, waste materials, and materials for fusion reactors. The articles are written at a level that allows undergraduate students to understand the material, while providing active researchers with a ready reference resource of information. Most of the chapters from the first Edition have been revised and updated and a significant number of new topics are covered in completely new material. During the ten years between the two editions, the challenge for applications of nuclear materials has been significantly impacted by world events, public awareness, and technological innovation. Materials play a key role as enablers of new technologies, and we trust that this new edition of Comprehensive Nuclear Materials has captured the key recent developments. Critically reviews the major classes and functions of materials, supporting the selection, assessment, validation and engineering of materials in extreme nuclear environments Comprehensive resource for up-to-date and authoritative information which is not always available elsewhere, even in journals Provides an in-depth treatment of materials modeling and simulation, with a specific focus on nuclear issues Serves as an excellent entry point for students and researchers new to the field
