Book Synopsis What is the Contribution of Abrasion to the Sediment Budget of a Mixed Sand and Gravel Beach? by : Bin Chen
Download or read book What is the Contribution of Abrasion to the Sediment Budget of a Mixed Sand and Gravel Beach? written by Bin Chen and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 1296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel abrasion model was developed using swash forces on sediment as the driver of abrasion. This differs from traditional abrasion models where transport distance is the primary factor determining abrasion. The model conceptualizes abrasion as a continuous process in the abrasion zone, unlike previous research that has focused on abrasion rates of individual particles that experience episodic abrasion during transport and burial. Significantly, the model allows calculation of abrasion loss using abrasion zone width, abrasion rate (%/m2/d) and abrasion loss (kg/m2/d) occurring over 33 years from 1979 to 2011, for the Waitaki coast.

Book Synopsis Guidelines on recreational water quality. Volume 1 by : World Health Organization
Download or read book Guidelines on recreational water quality. Volume 1 written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2021-07-12 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use of coastal, estuarine and freshwater recreational environments has significant benefits for health and well-being, including rest, relaxation, exercise, cultural and religious practices, and aesthetic pleasure, while also providing substantial local, regional and national economic benefits. These guidelines focus on water quality management for coastal and freshwater environments to protect public health. The guidelines: 1. describe the current state of knowledge about the possible adverse health impacts of various forms of water pollution; and2. set out recommendations for setting national health-based targets, conducting surveillance and risk assessments, putting in place systems to monitor and control risks, and providing timely advice to users on water safety. These guidelines are aimed at national and local authorities, and other entities with an obligation to exercise due diligence relating to the safety of recreational water sites. They may be implemented in conjunction with other measures for water safety (such as drowning prevention and sun exposure) and measures for environmental protection of recreational water use sites.
Book Synopsis Oceanographical Engineering by : Robert L. Wiegel
Download or read book Oceanographical Engineering written by Robert L. Wiegel and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As is the case with many modern fields of study, oceanographical engineering cuts across the boundaries of several disciplines. Like other scientific endeavors, it aims to understand the nature of the ocean and to make use of this understanding for the benefit of humanity through better ports, safer and more economical operations at sea, and greater use of the oceans' natural resources--food, raw materials, and recreation. This graduate-level text requires a knowledge of fluid mechanics; a background in the motions of sediments in fluids is advisable, as is a concurrent course in structural dynamics. Topics include the theory of periodic waves; tsunamis, storm surges, and harbor oscillations; the effect of structures on waves; waves in shoaling water; tides and sea level changes; currents; shores and shore processes; some characteristics of the oceans' waters; moorings; and other related subjects. Certain portions of the book pertaining to the distribution of temperatures and salinities in the ocean are largely descriptive; other portions, such as the sections on waves, are mathematical. Numerous drawings and photographs supplement the text.

Book excerpt: This book tells you where beach sand comes from, how waves are formed and how they break and move sand down the coast, how OC works of manOCO have blocked this movement and caused beach erosion, and what can be done to save the beaches for future generations of Americans. A three-part prescription for healthy beaches is proposed: OC backing offOCO, OC bypassing sandOCO, and OC beach nourishmentOCO. So if you love waves and beaches, and care about the future of your favorite beach spot, then read this book while you enjoy the beach."
