Book Synopsis Christ-faith and Abraham in Galatians 3–4 by : Johnathan F. Harris
Download or read book Christ-faith and Abraham in Galatians 3–4 written by Johnathan F. Harris and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-25 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On what basis are Gentile Christians justified and full inheriting members of Abraham’s family? By being circumcised and keeping the Torah? Paul answers by reinterpreting the Abraham narrative in light of the Christ-event as a story of two siblings. True Abrahamic children are those whose Spirit-wrought life arises, as God promised Abraham, from the event of Christ-faith. Like Isaac, they receive the life-giving power of the Spirit that is tethered to God’s promise and the event of eschatological faith. By contrast, those who, like Ishmael, are related to Abraham only by means of the flesh are slaves and not heirs.
Book Synopsis Paul’s Negotiation of Abraham in Galatians 3 in the Jewish Context by : Per Jarle Bekken
Download or read book Paul’s Negotiation of Abraham in Galatians 3 in the Jewish Context written by Per Jarle Bekken and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-07-05 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work offers a fresh reading of Paul’s appropriation of Abraham in Gal 3:6–29 against the background of Jewish data, especially drawn from the writings of Philo of Alexandria. Philo’s negotiation on Abraham as the model proselyte and the founder of the Jewish nation based on his trust in God's promise relative to the Law of Moses provides a Jewish context for a corresponding debate reflected in Galatians, and suggests that there were Jewish antecedents that came close to Paul’s reasoning in his own time. This volume incorporates a number of new arguments in the context of scholarly discussion of both Galatian 3 and some of the Philonic texts, and demonstrates how the works of Philo can be applied responsibly in New Testament scholarship.

Book excerpt: One of the leading Historical Jesus scholars of our time, John Meier has also made significant contributions in the areas of early Judaism and New Testament studies writ large. The Figure of Jesus in History and Theology features more than a dozen prominent scholars who engage Meier's work and address its reception today. These scholars, whose areas of expertise range from second temple Judaism to early Christianity, revisit, extend, and respond to Meier's scholarship in ways that allow readers to appreciate anew Meier's landmark publications. Collectively, these essays cast new light on the question of the Historical Jesus and provide a wealth of insight into John Meier's body of work as viewed through the lens of contemporary research. The volume offers essays that explore early Jewish and Greco-Roman contexts for New Testament writings, with contributions from Gary Anderson, James VanderKam, Michael Duggan, and Michael Theobald. Five related essays involve historical Jesus research, by Francis Moloney, William Loader, Amy-Jill Levine, Barbara Reid, and Michael Benjamin Cover. Five more essays concern the New Testament Gospels, as explored by Donald Senior, David Lincicum, Brant Pitre, Jeremy Corley, and Harold Attridge. The final three contributions by Frank Matera, David Aune and Alan Mitchell examine the Epistle to the Hebrews. This book is essential reading as it chronicles how the capacious scholarship of John Meier has impacted the 21st century.
Book Synopsis Sharing in the Son’s Inheritance by : Esau McCaulley
Download or read book Sharing in the Son’s Inheritance written by Esau McCaulley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the link between Paul's belief that Jesus is Israel's Messiah, and his interpretation of the Abrahamic Land Promise in Galatians. Countering claims that Paul replaces the Promised Land with the gift of the Spirit or salvation, Esau McCaulley argues that Paul expands this inheritance to include the whole earth; believing that, as the seed of Abraham and David, Jesus is entitled to the entire world as his inheritance and kingdom. McCaulley argues that scholars have neglected Paul's expanded interpretation of the inheritance of the earth, rarely appreciate the role that messianism plays in Galatians, and fail to acknowledge that Second Temple authors often portrayed royal and messianic figures as God's means of fulfilling the promises made to Abraham and Israel, via the establishment of kingdoms. Through a comparison of texts from the Pseudepigrapha, apocrypha, and the Dead Sea Scrolls with Galatians 3:1–4:7, 5:21, McCaulley argues Paul's interpretation of Jesus's death is a manifestation of Second Temple messianism because it ends the covenant curses outlined in Deuteronomy and begins the restoration of the inheritance to Abraham's offspring through the establishment of Jesus's worldwide kingdom; he concludes that Paul's interpretation of the Abrahamic inheritance is inseparable from his belief that Jesus is Israel's Messiah.
Book Synopsis The Figure of Hagar in Ancient Judaism and Galatians by : Ryan Heinsch
Download or read book The Figure of Hagar in Ancient Judaism and Galatians written by Ryan Heinsch and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2022-10-11 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt:
Download or read book Galatians written by John Paul Heil and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents two new proposals regarding Paul's letter to the Galatians. First, it demonstrates an entirely new chiastic structure embracing the entire letter, based on strict linguistic and textual criteria rather than on conceptual or theological themes. This chiastic structure accords with the view that Galatians was originally performed orally in a setting of communal worship. Secondly, it offers a new proposal for a key theme that runs throughout Galatians, as expressed by the subtitle of this book--"Worship for Life by Faith in the Crucified and Risen Lord." It considers "worship" to be a comprehensive concept that includes liturgical, cultic, or ritual worship as well as the moral behavior that is to complement it as ethical worship in accord with the biblical tradition. "Life" refers both to the present way of living as well as to future eternal life. "Faith" refers to the acceptance of divine grace available to the believer because of the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Book Synopsis Rethinking Galatians by : Peter Oakes
Download or read book Rethinking Galatians written by Peter Oakes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oakes and Boakye rethink Galatians by examining the text as a vision for the lives of its hearers. They show how, in tackling the difficulties that he faces in Galatia, Paul offers a vision of what the Galatians are in their relationship with the living Christ. This offers a new understanding of the concept of unity in diversity expressed in Gal 3:28. The authors develop their views over six chapters. First, Oakes maps a route from the letter to a focus on its Galatian hearers and on Paul's vision for their identity and existence. In the next chapter, Oakes uses the Christology of Galatians as a way to support the idea of pistis as current relationship with the living Christ. Boakye then offers three chapters analysing the letter's scriptural quotations and ideas about salvation and law. Boakye sees a key dynamic at work in Galatians as being a movement from death to life, as prophesied metaphorically by Ezekiel and as made literal for Paul in his encounter with the resurrected Christ, trust in whom becomes the route to life. Life becomes a key category for evaluating law. Boakye also draws Galatians close to Romans 4 in seeing in both texts the promise of the birth of Isaac, with Paul closely tying that to the resurrection of Jesus. Oakes then argues that the letter has a thematic concern for unity in diversity. In the first instance this is between Jews and gentiles but, in principle, it is between any other socially significant pair of groups.

Book Synopsis Paul: Servant of the New Covenant by : Scott J. Hafemann
Download or read book Paul: Servant of the New Covenant written by Scott J. Hafemann and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking 2 Cor 3:6 as its starting point, the new and updated essays here assembled investigate the key passages in Romans, 1-2 Corinthians, Galatians, and Philippians in which the covenant content and eschatological context of Paul's theology interpret one another. Developed over thirty years, Scott Hafemann's close reading of Paul's arguments, with an eye toward their OT/Jewish milieu, also advances the larger thesis that the various Israel/church, works/faith, and justification/judgment polarities in Paul's thinking do not represent a material contrast between a "law-way" and a "gospel-way" of relating to God. Rather, they epitomize an eschatological contrast between the character of God's people within the two eras of salvation history in which, by virtue of the Messiah and the Spirit, the Torah of the "old covenant" is now being kept in the "new."
