Over the past 100 years women labor force participation increased sharply and women are often even higher educated than men. Despite these facts there is still a huge wage gap between female and male workers in virtually all developed countries. Equal access to jobs and equal treatment within a firm by gender is guaranteed by legislation in most of the developed economies, still firms pay female and male workers differently. The bargaining and sorting effect may contribute to these differences. The former effect suggests that women may negotiate less aggressively than men and therefore receive a smaller share of the surplus generated by their job. The latter effect suggests that women tend to move to lower-paying jobs. Since there was no comprehensive economic research of both strands the underlying Card et al. provides the first comprehensive analysis of the impact of firm-specific pay premiums on the gender wage gap.

These premiums will contribute to the gender wage gap if women are less likely to work at high-paying firms or if women negotiate (or are offered) worse wage bargains with their employers than men. Using longitudinal data on the hourly wages of Portuguese workers matched with income statement information for firms, we show that the wages of both men and women contain firm-specific premiums that are strongly correlated with simple measures of the potential bargaining surplus at each firm. We then show how the impact of these firm-specific pay differentials on the gender wage gap can be decomposed into a combination of sorting and bargaining effects. We find that women are less likely to work at firms that pay higher premiums to either gender, with sorting effects being most important for low- and middle-skilled workers. We also find that women receive only 90% of the firm-specific pay premiums earned by men. Importantly, we find the same gender gap in the responses of wages to changes in potential surplus over time. Taken together, the combination of sorting and bargaining effects explain about one-fifth of the cross-sectional gender wage gap in Portugal.

Book excerpt: In rural societies with strong gender norms and customs, small informal agribusinesses may often be one of the few ways in which women can independently generate revenue. However, previous research has indicated that female run business may be perceived less favorably compared to their male counterparts. In this paper, we examine potential consequences of these biased perceptions on business transactions. In particular, we test whether the gender of the seller has an impact on buyers’ negotiation strategies and eventual outcomes in bilateral price negotiations. We use a lab-in-the-field experiment in eastern Uganda, where a representative sample of smallholder maize farmers are offered the opportunity to bargain over a bag of improved maize seed variety from a male or female seller. We find that buyers confronted with a female seller are less likely to accept the initial offer price and respond with a lower counter-bid price than farmers faced with a male seller. Negotiations take an average of one round longer when the seller is a woman and the transaction price is almost 9 percent lower. For comparison, we also look at the effect of the starting price on the same bargaining outcomes and find that the gender disadvantage is roughly equal to a 20 percent higher starting price.

In a unique finding, we identify a gap between the price received by women and the price received by men on three separate continents. Echoing similar results from other countries in sub-Saharan Africa, using mobile phone ownership and use data, we provide evidence to suggest that women farmers likely suffer from unequal access to information. The presence of asymmetric information is therefore indicated to be a limiting factor in women’s ability to receive a fair unit price.

Using administrative linked employer-employee data, we fit high-dimensional worker and firm fixed effects models to understand the sources of this decrease. Firm effects account for 40 percent of the total decrease and worker effects for 29 percent. Changes in observable worker and firm characteristics contributed little to these trends. Instead, the decrease is primarily due to a compression of returns to these characteristics, particularly a declining firm productivity pay premium. Our results shed light on potential drivers of earnings inequality dynamics.
