Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Surgery of the Abdomen This Book contains the experiences in abdominal surgery of a sector of the battle line over a period of thirty months. It is founded on the practice of many surgeons, working under different conditions and in different hospitals. The personal equation and influence of locality have thus been largely eliminated. It is hoped, therefore, that the figures quoted may present a standard with which other surgeons can compare their results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text Book of Abdominal Surgery: A Clinical Manual for Practitioners and Students IT is sometimes of advantage to systematise our knowledge of an advancing art, especially when it is one of recent and rapid growth. This has been the case with the Art of Surgery as applied to the Abdomen. It may be said that before 1860 abdominal surgery was unknown, or at least was universally condemned. For the next fifteen or twenty years it was almost entirely confined to the removal of tumours of the ovaries and it was not until about the year 1880 that operations on other abdominal organs became at all general. Now, such operations have been performed on every organ in the abdomen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Women and Abdominal Surgery, Vol. 1 IN the preface to my first Work of this kind, which appeared in 1877, I urged a plea that any new effort to extend our acquaintance with the Special Diseases of ivomen deserves at least to be received with patience. This plea was, to a very large extent, disregarded, and the method in which my little effort was received was speedily manifested in two wholly different and, I am bound to state, 'wholly unexpected directions. The first direction to be indicated is, of course, the most extended. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: ix Preface Smart surgeons learn from their own mistakes, smarter surgeons learn from mistakes of others, some never learn . . . You are a resident, overworked and constantly tired; sitting down with your mentor for a brief tutorial. What do you want to get out of these few minutes? To organize your thoughts and approaches to the particular problem; to learn how he -the weathered surgeon -"tackles it"; to grasp a few practical "recipes" or "goodies" and take home a message or two; to laugh a bit and unwind. This is also our goal in this book. We hope that you are not repelled or offended by the non-formal character of this book. This is how emergency abdominal surgery is taught best, by trial and error and repetitions, with emphasis on basics. This is not a "complete" textbook, nor is it a cookbook type manual or discussion of case studies; neither is it a collection of detailed lecture notes or exhaustive lists. Instead, it consists of a series of informal, uncensored, chats between experienced surgeons and their trainees. No percentages, series, elaborated figures or complicated algorithms are included; only a surgeon's narrative, explaining how "he does it" -based on his experience and state of the art knowledge of the literature. No references are included as it was our aim to put down nothing which has not been experienced, confirmed and practiced in our own hands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a fascinating account of surgery that throws light on forgotten and unknown aspects of its practice from antiquity to the present. It illuminates the rare periods of progress and also explains why there were lengthy times when no original operations were undertaken. Maybury has achieved this by identifying the time and place when each operation was first undertaken. The first of these was the trephination of the skull in Peru twelve thousand years ago, presumably to exorcise evil spirits. This operation over several thousand years reached Europe where Hippocrates described and rationalised it to treat head injuries, it is still practiced today and is the forerunner of each subsequent original operation. The golden ages of surgery took place in Ancient Greece and India and 1,300 years later in Western Europe and the USA. Between these periods, no original operations took place. Maybury explains why this happened and reveals the Greek theory that dominated surgery for over 2,000 years. He describes the passage and translation of the Greek manuscripts and their acceptance in the Arabian Empires and how in turn the Arabic versions strongly influenced Italy and then Western Europe. He also tells of the Edict of Tours of 1163 that devastated surgery and took 700 years to rectify and also the extraordinary modern era when all the tissues of the body were finally operated upon and very much more.

Book excerpt: Why is surgery so expensive? Surgeon Paul A. Ruggieri reveals little-known truths about his profession—and the hidden flaws of our healthcare system—in this compelling and troubling account of real patients, real doctors, and how money influences medical decisions behind the scenes. Even many well-informed patients have no idea what may be contributing to the cost of their surgery. With up-to-date research and stories from his practice, Ruggieri shows how business arrangements among hospitals, insurance companies, and surgeons affect who gets treatment—and whether they get the right treatment. Pulling back the curtain from the hospital bed, he explains how to safeguard one’s own health (and finances), and how America can make surgery more affordable for all without sacrificing quality care.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surgical Diseases of the Abdomen: With Special Reference to Diagnosis As a teacher and practical worker in the special field of abdominal surgery for eighteen years, I have found it necessary to rely largely upon Journal literature for guidance. Reliable sources of informa tion have not always been available and on this account much of my work has been done in a manner to me unsatisfactory. I therefore undertook a systematic study of those conditions within the abdo men which require surgical relief, relying upon my clinical experience to aid me in the choice and method of consideration of subjects, and the selection from general literature of the material which has proved to me of greatest value. The facts here presented are only such as have seemed to me of practical usefulness and as have borne the test of application.
