Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, edited by Prof. PLINIO ROSSI, an internationally well-known expert in biliary tract radiology, provides in 31 chapters a very comprehensive update on both diagnostic and therapeutic radiology of the biliary tract. First, a very complete and interesting overview of the normal morphology of the ana tomical area is presented by an anatomist, a radiologist, and a surgeon. This is followed by a discussion not only of the well-known and accepted imaging modalities, but also of the newer ones such as, magnetic resonance imaging and endoluminal and laparoscopic ultra sound. The book thus illustrates very nicely the diversity of diagnostic radiological tech niques that are currently available. Considerable technical progress and remarkable new insights in biliary tract radiology have been achieved in the field of the radiological interventional approach during recent years. Therefore, much emphasis has been placed in this book on the therapeutic possibili ties of the radiologist using the percutaneous minimally invasive approach for the treat ment of the various pathological conditions of the biliary tract. It is most impressive to note the substantial progress in terms of patient comfort achieved by using the percutaneous as compared to the surgical methods. These new methods also result in shorter hospitalization times and thereby help to reduce health care costs. This book provides the interested reader with a fascinating and very complete over view of these new procedures.

Book excerpt: An in-depth knowledge of the wide spectrum of normal gallbladder appearances is vital to appropriate clinical workup and the correct diagnosis of patients with upper abdominal symptoms. This book covers the range of appearances of the normal gallbladder and its variants, including discussions of anatomy, embryology, and imaging techniques to promote a better understanding of the subject. Anomalies of number, location, and form are each addressed in separate chapters, and discussions of imaging artifacts of the gallbladder and pseudolesions, which can mimic gallbladder disease, are also included. A short chapter on the appearance of the fetal gallbladder is included to round out this comprehensive volume.

Book excerpt: The development and the widespread clinical application of various di agnostic imaging modalities, such as diagnostic ultrasonography, X-ray computed tomography, single photon emission computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging, have been beyond all expectation. In particular, ultrasonography and X-ray computed tomography have be come major diagnostic tools for diseases of the liver, the biliary tract, and the pancreas. They often have virtually replaced other conventional imag ing modalities including invasive angiography and percutaneous trans he patic cholangiography. One modality may complement or conflict with another or other modalities. Each modality should be carefully selected with due regard for its diagnostic efficacy. In this book, the first section contains nine chapters dealing with current techniques of each diagnostic modality applicable to the liver, the biliary tract, and the pancreas. The second section deals with diseases of the liver, the biliary tract, and the pancreas and takes the form of case presentation with discussion of the significance of diagnostic imagings and diagnostic procedure. Preparation of the manuscript was made possible by the help of Dr. S. Fujita, who prepared the photographs, and Mrs. Sobajima, who typed the original manuscript. Dr. S. Miura and Miss Y. Shimizu under took the labor of translating our manuscript from Japanese into English. I would like to express my deep appreciation to all these persons, as well as to the contributors to this book, and also to the publishers, Shujunsha, Japan and Springer-Verlag.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough overview of the radiologic and pathologic findings of neoplastic diseases of the biliary tract, a sound knowledge of which is essential for appropriate patient management. A key feature is the correlation of imaging findings with both gross pathologic and histopathologic findings for each disease. This is of the utmost importance in understanding true pathologic abnormalities, bearing in mind, for example, the difficulty in ascertaining disease spread and extent on the basis of pathology alone. Since the first edition of the book, conceptual understanding of neoplastic disease of the bile ducts and cholangiocarcinogenesis has evolved significantly, and in the new edition the classification of diseases is based on the most recent edition of the WHO Classification of Tumors of the Digestive System. In addition, some newly recognized pathologies are covered. The book will enhance understanding of the pathology of neoplastic diseases of the biliary tract and aid imaging interpretation. It will be a great asset for pathologists, radiologists, biliary surgeons, and gastroenterologists.

Book excerpt: This book describes the techniques of percutaneous access to the gallbladder for the treatment of gallstones. It considers the indications, contraindications, and complications of the various routes to this organ. Percutaneous transhepatic and subcostal cholecystostomy are described step by step. This practical text is the first in any language on percutaneous cholecystostomy and its uses for the diagnosis of biliary disease. The author also discusses drainage of the gallbladder in acute gallbladder disease and in extrahepatic biliary obstruction, percutaneous lysis of gallstones, percutaneous cholecystolithotomy and transcholecystic access to the bile ducts. The text is illustrated with many procedure diagrams and prints of radiological techniques used in per- cutaneous cholecystostomy. It shows that there is now a real alternative to surgery in the treatment of gallstones. When thoroughly mastered, these safe methods open up wide vistas - a radical alteration in the treatment of a large number of patients with symptomatic gallstones!

Book excerpt: Hepatopancreatoduodenectomy (HPD) is a radical new surgical procedure developed in Japan to treat patients with biliary tract carcinoma. The development and clinical application of HPD have been made possible through research conducted primarily by Japanese investigators on common routes of the spread of biliary tract carcinoma. Still regarded as a radical procedure because of its technical difficulty and possible complications, HPD is not yet widely practiced anywhere in the world. The authors of this volume, who are pioneers in the field, are convinced that recent progress in health-care technology will make HPD a safer and more commonly accepted procedure in the near future. The book is designed to share the experience of Japanese researchers with those working in the field throughout the world. The contents include a review of the historical development of HPD in Japan, indications and conditions for HPD, perioperative examinations, and patient management. Also presented are practical aspects of surgical technique and countermeasures against postoperative complications.
