Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABCs of Alzheimer's Disease: a Shared Reality by Me and My Shadow is a story of Bruce and Ethel's Alzheimer's disease (AD) journey, along with a history of AD from autopsies to PET scan research, including technology and genetic discoveries. The book is a realistic, short, comprehensive, evidence-based, description of Alzheimer's disease (AD). It describes AD research, including clinical trials, a simplified understanding of the brain, and the experiences of patient/caregiver persistence and journey as well as hope for the future research possibilities through worldwide basic science, biology, genetic, mathematics, and technology evolution and discoveries. In addition, it identifies AD issues, uncertainties, and author's comments, along with "outside the box" ideas for governance to provide leadership for the coming Alzheimer's disease tsunami. With the future facing an AD tsunami and potential shortage of care personnel, the book provides potential for education and/or training for candidate patients, caregivers, primary care doctors, nurses, physician assistants, license nurse practitioners, certified nurse assistant, institutional care personnel, in-home health personnel, hospital personnel, educators, and politicians. In addition, this book could be a supplement document for geriatric schooling as well as an enlightening and educating source for political leaders (all three branches of government) and their staffs. The book describes a stage by stage behavior symptoms tied to cognitive measures and Alzheimer Association warning signs, along with suggestions for caregiver, relative to patient's state of decline. The book addresses why clinical trials have been failing and why hope for delay and prevention may be forthcoming as well as the 2011 paradigm shift and current presymptomatic candidacy. Clinical trials adventures, along with a suggestion to eliminate the placebo cohort group are described. So, what does the future hold for Alzheimer's disease-hope, promises, delay, prevention, or cure? These are all wants. What is reality? Moving research targets are being addressed and pursued with evolving knowledge and tools. This evolution will probably make current targets obsolete in twenty years. For reality, you be the judge after reading this book. "Out the box" ideas are provided that require governance action for confronting the coming AD tsunami and associated diversity care.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a vivid story of life with Alzheimersor at least, one story of one family with an unusual sense of humor. Told in an unconventional style (through the alphabet rather than chronologically), Leslie F. Hergert describes the sadness, humor, and challenges of caring for a partner with Alzheimers Disease through its many stages. Each letter of the alphabet provides reflections on some facet of the Alzheimers experience, told with honesty and a wry eye. Leslie spoke at our conference on Dementia and attendees said that her stories were the most powerful part of a very good conference. Her book extends that speech to provide an inside view of living with Alzheimers, a comfort for others living with the disease and an education for outsiders. Nancy Willbanks, Somerville Cambridge Elder Services Ms. Hergert writes candidly and poignantly about her experience caring for her husband with early onset Alzheimers Disease. She touches upon the major cognitive, psychological, and functional changes that occur over the course of the disease, and she provides practical tips to caregivers on how to manage them. She also writes movingly about the multiple emotions she felt as she accompanied her husband on the journey, reminding all of us that there are moments of joy and laughter even among those of loss and grief. I have no doubt that readers will find her words of wisdom helpful. Serena Chao, MD, MSc; Geriatrics Division Chief, Cambridge Health Alliance; Instructor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School

Book excerpt: Memory game for Dementia and Alzhiemer's patients The Alphabet listing game is a simple, memory recall based activity book for Dementia and Alzhiemer patients. It is developed specifically for those suffering from Dementia and Alzheimers, or other senior citizens who may be showing signs of memory loss. Importantly, the book does not specifically imply that the user is suffering from dementia, which is often a trigger cause for many Dementia Suffers. Rather, it contains general information for carers, but also information for those who do not require assistance. This game is designed for one reason, to help improve the memory recall of seniors (while entertaining them)! How does it work? The rules are very simple! All the user has to do is try to name one word beginning with each letter, for your chosen category. For Example, if you were to choose the category 'Boys Names', the list may look like this: A: Alan B: Benjamin C: Charles D: ......... Although extremely simple, activities such as this have been shown to help slow memory loss. It is also a great source of entertainment, which can be played individually or as a group in seniors' homes etc. The book uses large, easy to read font and an extremely easy to understand layout, tailored specifically for seniors with dementia. Down the bottom of each page, you also have the option to count your score (how many you get out of 26) as well as time how quickly you can finish each game. These are both optional, but are great for cares and family members tracking the progress of their patients. For carers, it may be easier to work with your patient, and help by writing down the answers and giving hints to encourage answers. Again, play this game how it suits your situation! It is also recommended that you make a 'routine' out of this game for your patients, e.g. play one game per day, as consistency is key to memory recall! You may also like to repeat categories over time, so that you can track progress in both scores and time taken. It is amazing the patterns that you may find. Book Features: 8.5 x 11 inch - Large, spacious pages List of categories 96 category pages (Play the game 96 times!) Printed on white paper for maximum clarity Soft Cover Perfect bound

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone associated with dementia knows the pain and agony of watching (and trying to help) someone they love leave them a bit at a time. Th e loved one goes from the Adult stage to the Belligerent stage to the Care needing stage. Nothing is right, nothing is good enough and the person being cared for is not grateful for all the eff ort. At times, caregiving for a dementia patient feels like a black hole with no end in sight. In the ABC for Dementia Caregivers, the authors recount what they learned, inch by painful inch. Hopefully this book can offer you suggestions that may help you care for your beloved. Th e book is filled with the stories of spouses and close friends who all succumbed to dementia. Some of the stories are painful, some are humorous. All are intended to give you the emotional lift that will help you through one more difficult day. Patrice Gapen’s best friend and Matron of Honor at her wedding began imagining things, awful things: abuse, hitmen chasing her, other guys kidnapping her. Her husband, Michael Hand, (the coauthor) knew she was safe at home, as he was with her. At the same time, Ms. Gapen’s husband had a major stroke resulting in an emergency helicopter transport to a larger city. All this brought her many questions. Will he survive? What will his survival look like? Who should she call? What kind of funeral does he want? Her mind was spinning faster and faster and she drove faster and faster. Her husband survived but was totally paralyzed on one side. Mr. Hand’s wife continued to hallucinate, requiring more and more care. Th us, the authors began the long trek of doctor’s appointments, pharmacy trips, physical therapy appointments and a series of diagnoses. During all this, they continued working, juggling assignments, dealing with cranky coworkers and unhappy bosses when they were gone yet again.

Book excerpt: Although very little can be done to alter the course of dementia, much can be done to maximize the quality of life of people with the condition. Research as well as practical experience suggest that behavior management, especially through programs that provide meaningful and constructive activity, is currently the most effective treatment. In Keeping Busy, James Dowling describes a variety of activities designed to bring meaning and enjoyment to the lives of persons with dementia. The activities are organized by general categories such as music, exercise, horticulture, pets, humor, and social events. The largest section deals with communication and includes word games that help people strengthen their remaining verbal skills. The description of each activity includes step-by-step instructions, as well as tips on how to adapt it for small or large groups, for individuals at home or in an organization, or people who are bedridden.

Book excerpt: Dementia With GRACE I believe that although much is lost at each stage of dementia, there is much that remains. I believe that when you see the ¿why¿ of a behavior, it ceases to be ¿problem¿ and rather becomes an opportunity for deeper connection. Did you know that almost all behaviors are because of an unmet need? I believe that by understanding this basic tenet and then using that knowledge to reframe the disease and its effects, we can better meet the needs of those we love. The techniques you will find in this guide will help you navigate the rough days and steer you toward more graceful days. This approach to behavior management has been developed over years working with people with dementia. In these pages, you will find an approach for just about any behavior that emerges! You will come to understand HOW to manage the behavior by learning WHY certain behaviors occur and WHAT you can do to keep ¿problem¿ behaviors at a minimum. Using a proven, systematic approach to behavior management based on the acronym, G.R.A.C.E., you will you discover the meaning behind each step, and discover how extending and receiving grace can help both your loved one receiving care, AND you as a caregiver.
