Book excerpt: Metabolic syndrome has been the topic of countless publications. It still remains a subject of debate and some experts have even questioned its clinical relevance. Its diagnosis is nevertheless predictive of an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease even in the absence of traditional risk factors. Many years ago, our team made the point that the most prevalent form of metabolic syndrome was linked to abdominal obesity, which can be found even among individuals who are not considered obese by body weight standards. Imaging techniques such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging have revealed the link between regional body fat partitioning and cardiometabolic risk. Visceral obesity is the most dangerous form of obesity, with subcutaneous obesity being associated with lower health risk. We have proposed that excess visceral fat may be a marker of subcutaneous adipose tissue dysfunction not being able to serve as a metabolic sink, causing lipid accumulation at undesired sites, a condition described as ectopic fat deposition. Among the effective approaches to prevent, delay, or manage metabolic syndrome, lifestyle changes are the key elements, with an emphasis on the importance of healthy global dietary patterns, regular physical activity, and adequate sleep quality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sickle Cell Pain is a panoramic, in-depth exploration of every scientific, human, and social dimension of this cruel disease. This comprehensive, definitive work is unique in that it is the only book devoted to sickle cell pain, as opposed to general aspects of the disease. The 752-page book links sickle cell pain to basic, clinical, and translational research, addressing various aspects of sickle pain from molecular biology to the psychosocial aspects of the disease. Supplemented with patient narratives, case studies, and visual art, Sickle Cell Pain’s scientific rigor extends through its discussion of analgesic pharmacology, including abuse-deterrent formulations. The book also addresses in great detail inequities in access to care, stereotyping and stigmatization of patients, the implications of rapidly evolving models of care, and recent legislation and litigation and their consequences.

Book excerpt: Body MRI: Cases in Radiology serves as a ready reference of 141 cases and nearly 900 superb quality images of common and uncommon conditions encountered in the daily practice of body MRI. The book is specifically intended for radiology residents and fellows as a study guide to broaden clinical knowledge and improve diagnostic skills when reviewing MR images of the liver, biliary system, pancreas, urinary tract, adrenal glands, peritoneal cavity, spleen, gastrointestinal system, female genital tract, vascular system, and heart. The selected cases provide outstanding examples of various disease states and their appearances as demonstrated by MR imaging using a variety of pulse sequences. Each case is shown on the front page with a brief clinical history and multiple, carefully selected images that best show the important findings. When turning the page, the imaging findings, differential diagnosis and important teaching points are given in bullet-point format facilitating the learning process and allowing the reader to improve interpretation and diagnostic capability in body MRI. Cases are presented in random order to mimic the diagnostic challenges that typically occur when reading the daily worklist of cases in a routine clinical body MRI practice. Readers can also review the cases by organ system through the Index of Cases found in the back of the book. Body MRI Cases is also an excellent companion study guide to Essentials of Body MRI by the same authors. Together, these texts provide an excellent foundation in Body MRI.

The focus is on the immediate and long term complications that would be important to both the general surgeon and those surgeons with specialty experience in bariatric surgery. Sections address the nutritional deficiencies following bariatric surgery with specific attention to Roux en Y gastric bypass and pancreatico-biliary diversion as well as the correction of these deficiencies with medical intervention as well as the indications for surgical revision or reversal. The text reviews the work-up of a bariatric patient with abdominal pain including the appropriate imaging and threshold for operative intervention and the techniques to achieve optimal visualization during this difficult situation. This section focuses on the operative management of anastomotic and staple line leaks and how to definitively manage these surgical emergencies as well as achieve source control and stabilization. Later chapters focus on specific complications following bariatric surgery with specific focus on RYGB, vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), biliary pancreatic diversion, and gastric band. Complications include gastric fistula, gastric staple line disruption following VSG, gastro-jejunal leak following RYGB, relux following bariatric surgery, and failure of weight loss following bariatric surgery. These sections are written by experts in the field of bariatrics and include evidence based medicine as well as expert opinion on the management of bariatric complications. The sections provide a review of the literature and references at the close of each section. Complications in Bariatric Surgery will serve as a resource for both the general surgeon who handles bariatric emergencies as well as the bariatric specialist.

Book excerpt: "Frontiers In Thyroidology" assembles the prize lectures, symposia, and papers presented during the Ninth International Thyroid Congress in Sao Paulo, Brazil in September, 1985. This book represents the State-of the-Art in thyroid studies with its continuous expansion into the areas of immunology, molecular biology, clinical and environmental medicine. As its name also indicates, the material compiled in this volume defines important questions to be answered in basic and applied aspects of the thyroid. So, this book clearly demonstrates the rewards, excitement, and challenges posed by the thyroid gland. Once again, the thyroid gland, through its unique and important functions and implications in health and disease, has been able to congregate scientists throughout the world to communicate their findings, to share their expertise and experiences, and to strengthen their bonds of friendship and commitment to make a better world through their work. This publication consists of 309 papers in 19 different topics. The prize lectures and symposia review and update our knowledge in basic and clinical aspects of exceptional interest in the thyroid field. "Frontiers in Thyroidology" adds to a series of publications from previous interna tional thyroid meetings which includes: "Advances in Thyroid Research", London, 1960; "Current Topics in Thyroid Research", Rome, 1965; "Further Advances in Thyroid Research", Vienna, 1970; "Thyroid Research", Boston, 1975, and "Thyroid Research VIII", Sydney, 1980.
