Book excerpt: Abalone Pioneers is the Australian story of the divers, deckhands, researchers and processors who established and developed the zone's abalone industry, from the amateur fishermen of the 1950s and the hazy crazy tribe of 'scruffy longhairs', who were attracted by the hedonistic lifestyle and fantastic profits in the 1960s, to the professional enterprise of today. It charts the development of the Victorian Western Abalone Divers Association and its role managing and protecting the Victorian Western Zone's resources, and explores the successful diver-led commercial processors. Illustrated with over 100 historical photographs and featuring over 50 interviews, Abalone Pioneers is an exuberant and fascinating account of the establishment of one of Australia's valuable but little-known fisheries. Abalone is one of Australia's more valuable commercial fisheries, producing about 40 per cent of the world's wild-stock harvest, and a significant part of that is found off the coast of southwest Victoria, in what is known as the Western Zone.

Book excerpt: An exotic and expensive delicacy in Asia and known as one of the treasures of the sea, abalone is rarely eaten in Australia. Yet this shellfish is one of the country's more valuable commercial fisheries, producing about 40 per cent of the world's wild-stock harvest. And a significant part of that is found off the coast of southwest Victoria, in what is known as the Western Zone. Abalone Pioneers is the story of the divers, deckhands, researchers and processors who established and developed the zone's abalone industry, from the amateur fishermen of the 1950s and the hazy crazy tribe of 'scruffy longhairs', who were attracted by the hedonistic lifestyle and fantastic profits in the 1960s, to the professional enterprise of today. In the kitchen of his Alvarado Street restaurant in Monterey, California, Pop transformed rubbery gastropods into an epicurean delight. Working with red abalone collected by Monterey's community of Japanese divers, Pop dipped the foot in egg wash, added a secret ingredient, rolled it in cracker crumbs and cooked it quickly in olive oil. Tourists and celebrities alike sat down at Pop's table to enjoy his famous recipe, and eventually, he shipped steaks on ice to hotels and restaurants throughout the state. Pull up a chair as historian Tim Thomas recounts the story of an innovative restaurateur and a group of pioneering fishermen who turned underappreciated mollusks into the talk of the 1915 San Francisco World's Fair.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hype, hope, or horror? A vivid look at nanotechnology, written by an insider and experienced science writer. The variety of new products and technologies that will spin out of nanoscience is limited only by the imagination of the scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs drawn to this new field. Steve Edwards concentrates on the reader's self interest: no military gadgets, wild fantasies of horror nanobot predators and other sci-fi stuff, but presents a realistic view of how this new field of technology will affect people in the near future. He is in close contact with many pioneers in nanotechnology, and includes their backgrounds to allow readers, especially college students considering a career in the field, to better imagine themselves in such positions. However, technology does not develop in a vacuum, and this book also looks at the social, political and economic changes attendant upon the development of nanotechnology. For the science-interested general public as well as chemists, students, lecturers, chemical organizations, materials scientists, journalists, politicians, industry, physicists, and biologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abalones are marine snails from the family Haliotidae . This family of shellfish is comprised of 56 recognized species worldwide and eight known species in California. The Native Peoples of California fished and dove for abalone for thousands of years. Chinese immigrants first arrived in California around 1850 to work in the goldfields and on the railroads. Some found their way to Monterey and discovered an abundance of large red abalone that nobody was using. By the mid-1890s, Japanese fishermen had also discovered this rich abundance of abalone. Soon, the Japanese introduced helmet diving technology to the fishery. In 1908, a German restaurateur in Monterey began slicing abalone into steaks. Soon, men from the Azores and elsewhere started fishing abalone along the Central Coast of California. By the 1950s, there were hundreds of people and families fishing this delicacy commercially and thousands more fishing for recreation and subsistence. Steven L. Rebuck grew up in the abalone fishery and served as the abalone technical consultant to the Southern Sea Otter Recovery Team from 1993 to 2004. Christopher Rebuck, an internet technician, is a native Californian and Steven's oldest son. He began surfing and hunting abalone at the age of five. Tim Thomas is the former historian and curator of the Monterey Maritime Museum. He authored The Abalone King of Monterey: "Pop" Ernest Doelter, Pioneering Japanese Fishermen & the Culinary Classic that Saved an Industry with The History Press in 2013.

Many people marvel at the iridescent swirls gracing the interior of an abalone shell; others exclaim over their first bite of an abalone steak. Seldom do people realize what causes the lovely colors of the shell, or that this animal is really a huge, flattened snail.
