Book excerpt: The intifada, which began in December 1987, has become one of the longest running confrontations within the broad context of the Israeli-Arab conflict. This volume is not concerned with why the intifada phenomenon began, how it developed, or possible scenarios for the future. Rather, it is about communication and the intifada: what people have been saying, thinking, and writing about the conflict and about the messages being produced by the mass media. The book is a collection of studies conducted mostly in Israel and some other Western countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the eve of the Six-Day War in 1967, Israel was nineteen years old and as much an adolescent as the average nineteen-year-old person. Issues of identity and transition were the talk among Israeli intellectuals, including the writer Nissim Rejwan. Was Israel a Jewish state or a democratic state? And, most frustratingly, who was a Jew? As Nancy Berg's foreword makes clear, these issues became more critical and complex in the two decades after the war as Israel matured into a regional power. Rejwan, an Iraqi-born Jew whose own fate was tied to the answers, addresses the questions of those days in his letters, essays, and remembrances collected in Israel's Years of Bogus Grandeur. Israel's overwhelming victory in 1967 brought control of the former Palestinian territories; at the same time, Oriental Jews (i.e., those not from Europe) became a majority in the Israeli population. The nation, already surrounded by hostile, recently humiliated Arab neighbors, now had an Arab majority (Jewish, Muslim, Druze, and Christian) within its borders—yet European Jews continued to run the country as their own. Rejwan wrote tirelessly about the second-class status of Arab Israelis (and especially of Arab Jews), encouraging a more inclusive attitude that might eventually help heal the wounds left by the Six-Day War. His studies in sociology at Tel Aviv University informed his work. For his cause, Rejwan lost his job and many of his friends but never his pen. Through Munich, Entebbe, political scandals, economic crises, and the beginning of the Intifada, Rejwan narrates Israel's growing pains with feisty wit and unwavering honesty.

Book excerpt: A secular Jew spends his life as a prosecutor in Los Angeles. He goes to the California desert town of Borrego Springs and comes to believe he is a direct descendant of Aaron, Mosess older brother. He leaves his job, his family, and departs on a mystical and magical journey that brings him to a revelation. He decides he is compelled to build the Temple of Solomon in the desert town. But to get this done, he encounters drug dealers, neo-Nazis, Arab sheiks, and a few billionaires. He picks up some desert characters that will take bullets for him, and they do. The journey mixes real events, true archeology, and historical figures with the creations of the novel. The challenge for the reader is to identify fact from fiction. It is one wild, raucous ride that has most unexpected turns and stops along the way. There is nothing like thispart history, part religion, and part mysticism. And you will wonder: is this fantasy, prophesy, or reality?

The conflict evokes unparalleled passion and hostility not only among its immediate participants and neighbors but also in the wider international community. The involvement of three principal monotheistic religions makes the conflict a truly universal contestation. As a result, it often contributes to bouts of violence, turmoil and terrorism in the Middle East and beyond. This second edition of Historical Dictionary of the Arab-Israeli Conflict covers the history through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 600 cross-referenced entries important events, key personalities, official positions of principal states and the UN and other efforts to find a peaceful settlement.. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about this conflict.
