Book Synopsis The Other Modern Movement by : Kenneth Frampton
Download or read book The Other Modern Movement written by Kenneth Frampton and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-25 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing new look at modernist architecture, emphasizing its diversity, complexity, and broad inventiveness Usually associated with Mies and Le Corbusier, the Modern Movement was instrumental in advancing new technologies of construction in architecture, including the use of glass, steel, and reinforced concrete. Renowned historian Kenneth Frampton offers a bold look at this crucial period, focusing on architects less commonly associated with the movement in order to reveal the breadth and complexity of architectural modernism. The Other Modern Movement profiles nineteen architects, each of whom consciously contributed to the evolution of a new architectural typology through a key work realized between 1922 and 1962. Frampton's account offers new insights into iconic buildings like Eileen Gray's E-1027 House in France and Richard Neutra's Kaufmann House in Palm Springs, California, as well as lesser-known works such as Antonin Raymond's Tokyo Golf Club and Alejandro de la Sota's Maravillas School Gymnasium in Madrid. Foregrounding the ways that these diverse projects employed progressive models, advanced new methods in construction techniques, and displayed a new sociocultural awareness, Frampton shines a light on the rich legacy of the Modern Movement and the enduring potential of the unfinished modernist project.

Book Synopsis Pilot in the Danish Brigade in Sweden during the Second World War by : Aage Sandqvist
Download or read book Pilot in the Danish Brigade in Sweden during the Second World War written by Aage Sandqvist and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021-06-25 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the second half of World War II, Sweden began to provide confidential assistance to its two neighbours, Norway and Denmark. This aid was in the form of so-called police camps, where refugees from these two German occupied countries could gather and prepare for a return to their homelands, when the Germans were expected to give up. In the home countries, these police forces were to restore order in society, and this motivation from neutral Sweden was tolerated by the Germans. But as time went on, the character changed from being police forces to becoming more and more regular military troops, although with simple weapons. The so-called Danish Brigade eventually consisted of nearly 5,000 Danish refugees, who were placed in various camps around Sweden. Among these Danish refugees, were slightly more than a dozen Danish pilots, who were secretly placed in pairs on different Swedish airbases. They eventually gained access to Sweden's foremost military aircraft, namely the Saab B17 dive-bomber. In the last days of the war, these pilots gathered at the F7 Såtenäs airbase on the shores of Lake Vänern, where they formed the Danish Brigade's Air Unit. Its main purpose was to support the Danish Brigade's return to Denmark. One of these pilots was the author's father, Lieutenant Carlo Hjalmar Sandqvist. Carlo is the "Pilot in the Danish Brigade in Sweden during the Second World War." This book presents inside views of the Danish resistance movement and German concentration camps in Denmark during World War II, and a dramatic escape. It describes the Danish Brigade in Sweden - a secret organization in which Sweden trained up to 5,000 Danish refugees as "police troops", eventually a paramilitary organization. It also presents the secret Swedish military plan for "Saving Denmark" in the last year of the war.

Book Synopsis Gunnar Asplund's Gothenburg by : Nicholas Adams
Download or read book Gunnar Asplund's Gothenburg written by Nicholas Adams and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2014-10-08 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the west coast port city of Gothenburg, Sweden, the architect Gunnar Asplund built a modest extension to an old courthouse on the main square (1934–36). Judged today to be one of the finest works of modern architecture, the courthouse extension was immediately the object of a negative newspaper campaign led by one of the most noted editors of the day, Torgny Segerstedt. Famous for his determined opposition to National Socialism, he also took a principled stand against the undermining of urban tradition in Gothenburg. Gothenburg’s problems with modern public architecture, though clamorous and publicized throughout Sweden, were by no means unique. In Gunnar Asplund’s Gothenburg, Nicholas Adams places Asplund’s building in the wider context of public architecture between the wars, setting the originality and sensitivity of Asplund’s conception against the political and architectural struggles of the 1930s. Today, looking at the building in the broadest of contexts, we can appreciate the richness of this exquisite work of architecture. This book recaptures the complex magic of its creation and the fascinating controversy of its completed form.

Download or read book IMAGINARIES ON MATTER: TOOLS, MATERIALS, ORIGINS written by Thomas Bo Jensen and published by AADR – Art Architecture Design Research. This book was released on 2023-11-21 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imaginaries on Matter – Tools, Materials, Origins, promotes an innovative architectural research agenda that connects historical-cultural written research with digitally led material explorations. The common thread is the notion of the material imagination, disclosed in the reverie, or material daydream, which challenges overly pragmatic or unreflective material choices within current architectural practice. In bonding our imagination directly with matter while also confronting new technologies, this book promotes strategies by which architects' and builders' future relations with materials can stay rooted within the deeper concerns of cultural meaning. Imaginaries on Matter includes interviews with Aulets Arquitectes, Alibi Studio, Ensamble Studio, Geometria, Helen & Hard, KieranTimberlake, Supermanoeuvre, and Vandkunsten, as well as a postscript by David Leatherbarrow. Edited by Thomas Bo Jensen, Carolina Dayer, Jonathan Foote
