Book excerpt: The Swiss theologian Huldrych Zwingli (1484–1531) was one of the most prominent reformers and the founder of the Reformed Protestant Church in the Swiss Confederation. During the last hundred years more than 200 titles from his private library have been discovered. They give an interesting insight into his interests and sources. The present book contains not only an extensive introduction and a catalogue of these books and manuscripts, but also an inventory of the lost works possessed by Zwingli. They open the door to Zwingli’s study and to the intellectual world of an important reformer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Next to Luther himself, Ulrich Zwingli (1484-1531) was probably the most important and certainly the most influential of the early Protestant reformers. His Commentary on True and False Religion, addressed to King Francis I of France and published by the printer Froschauer in Zurich in 1525, contrasted what Zwingli regarded as the true religion of the Protestants, grounded in Scripture, with the false religion of tradition and reason advocated by the opponents of the Reformation. In twenty-nine chapters Zwingli discussed all of the principal topics of Christian theology, from the meaning of the word "religion" itself to the role and place of images in Christian worship. All the disputed issues of the early Reformation--the doctrine of Church and ministry, baptism, penance, eucharist, the nature of civil authority--are explained lucidly and concisely. The Commentary makes clear not only the grounds for Zwingli's break with the medieval Catholic tradition in which he had been raised but also the nature of his disagreements with Erasmus, Luther, and the Swiss Anabaptists. The result is the most significant dogmatic work which Zwingli ever wrote and the most important systematic statement of Reformed theology before Calvin's Institutes.

Book excerpt: This book, by a leading Reformation scholar, is the only comprehensive introduction to Zwingli's thought for the student and general reader. In it Stephens discusses the main areas of debate in Zwingli studies and presents a variety of interpretations of his work. In the opening chapters, he places Zwingli in the context of Zurich and Switzerland in the sixteenth century, describes the various influences on Zwingli's development, and outlines his life and work as a reformer. The following two chapters introduce the main themes in Zwingli's thought, and these are related both to the life and work of the man himself as well as the views of other reformers. A final chapter considers Zwingli as a reformer and theologian, emphasizing, as Stephens does throughout the book, Zwingli's relevance today.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Ulrich Zwingli, the Swiss Patriot and Reformer: The Chapters of This Book, With Bibliography, Were Presented to the Hartford Theological Seminary, as a Thesis for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The Protestant Reformation has proved a fa vorite theme with church historians, and to name or even to enumerate the volumes that have been written on the subject would be of itself a large undertaking. The interest felt by a great com pany of readers in this particular era and its spe cial attractiveness to historical writers - facts amply attested by the existence of a vast and rap idly increasing literature - is a circumstance so well recognized and clearly understood that the writer feels that the briefest explanation or apol ogy will suffice to account for the appearance of an additional book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First released in 1988, this 25th Anniversary Edition of Timothy George’s Theology of the Reformers includes a new chapter and bibliography on William Tyndale, the reformer who courageously stood at the headwaters of the English Reformation. Also included are expanded opening and concluding chapters and updated bibliographies on each reformer. Theology of the Reformers articulates the theological self-understanding of five principal figures from the period of the Reformation: Martin Luther, Huldrych Zwingli, John Calvin, Menno Simons, and William Tyndale. George establishes the context for their work by describing the spiritual climate of their time. Then he profiles each reformer, providing a picture of their theology that does justice to the scope of their involvement in the reforming effort. George details the valuable contributions these men made to issues historically considered pillars of the Christian faith: Scripture, Jesus Christ, salvation, the church, and last things. The intent is not just to document the theology of these reformers, but also to help the church of today better understand and more faithfully live its calling as followers of the one true God. Through and through, George’s work provides a truly integrated and comprehensive picture of Christian theology at the time of the Reformation.

Making use of the main secondary studies in German, French, and English, and drawing from the whole range of Zwingli's writings, the book covers the central themes of his theology--unfolding them historically as well as systematically--and sets it in the context of his life and ministry.
