Book excerpt: Excerpt from Representative Southern Poets To the scholarly and philosophic mind of Dr. Samuel Johnson we owe the wise saying that "the chief glory of every people arises from its authors." Of course he meant authors whose works represent, and are genuine and direct forces in, the development and conservation of ethical and intellectual virtues in the world; he referred to writers who help civilization in the achievement of whatever is best, truest, and most beautiful that the hand of man can give form to, or the soul can reach and transmute out of the Ideal into the Real. Nothing can be of higher value or worthier of praise and admiration than the power and majesty of thought, vitalized by wisdom from heavenly sources and glowing with the inspiration of genius. Thoughts, finding expression in words arranged in harmonious order, embellished with the graces of language, and permanently embodied in the form of books, are things that do not die. They transmit themselves from age to age, and posterity prizes them as a heritage of inestimable worth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From the Southern Poets Poe did not find his duties as cadet at all pleasant. He was reserved in disposition and made few friends. The routine of military school life became more and more distasteful to him, until at length he deliberately brought about his expulsion by neglect Of such duties as roll call and guard duty. He was twenty-two years of age when, March, 1831, he left West Point. Before leaving the Academy he had secured subscriptions from his fellow-cadets for a volume of his poetry. This, the third volume to be issued, was a revision of his earlier volumes, was entitled Poems, and was dedicated to his fellow-students Of West Point. Nearly every Southern college and university now offers a course in the subject, and the summer schools and Chautauquas frequently make it a special feature. All this is as it should be. There are Southern writers scarce ly known by name to-day who are deserving of careful atten tion. Especially is this true among the Southern poets, who, amidst prosperity and adversity, have sung songs of gladness and of sorrow that stand among the finest productions in American literature. How few of them are intimately, lov ingly known at the present day! This collection is made in the hope that still further in terest may be aroused. Other collections have been made, but they have dealt almost entirely With the poets living in the first sixty years of the nineteenth century. In the present compilation specimens are given from three centuries of Southern verse - from 1607 to 1907. Because of this fact the book, it is hoped, will be of interest not only to students of literature, but also to students of history and to lovers of the old and curious in general. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masterpieces of the Southern Poets Although Lanier has been dead more than thirty years, and no copyright has ever existed in many of his poems, his poetical works were collated by his widow a few years ago, then published by Messrs. Charles Scribner's Sons, from which house she receives a royalty. Therefore, while this volume contains all the greater poems of Poe, as there seems to be no one to claim any royalty on the publication of his works, in which no copyright now exists, Lanier is not so well represented. But I have been sorely tempted to publish in this work by far the greater part of gentle Sidney's superb creations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Prose and Poetry for Schools If criticism is offered because of the omission of favorite authors, we can only suggest that this is no compendium of Southern literature. It was impossible to include everything, and those selections were made which, in the judgment of the editors, would hasten the establishment of a point of contact between the youth ful student and that great world of literature to which we hope to introduce him. The grouping of the stories and poems should be of assistance to the pupil. The usual chronological ar rangement has been abandoned; selections have been assembled with reference to a central idea, both for the sake of clearness of apprehension and for the purpose of sustaining interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The South in Prose and Poetry For a long time the literature of the South was neglected, or, perhaps, it is nearer the truth to say that it was ignored. Thomas Nelson Page, in a speech some years ago, stated that the rest of the world looked upon the South as a section of the United States without a literature, and the Encyclopaedia Britannica, an authority throughout the world, published an arraignment far more scathing than this. We of the South have no one to blame for this condition of affairs but ourselves. It is only natural that, if we did not seem to place a proper value upon our own writers, no other section was going to herald their fame except where the overwhelming force of genius compelled it. We can but take the form of the mold in which we are cast. Our range of vision is limited by our horizon, and unless that horizon is lifted our field of vision will always remain the same. To those whose knowledge of American literature has been acquired merely from text-books written by men who have given scant space to the authors of the South, it is, in spite of its truth, an astonishing fact that Simms ranks only second to Hawthorne; that Poe surpasses all the other of our poets; that Calhoun was our most profound logician, and Maury the greatest American scientist of his day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Authors in Poetry and Prose This poet was born in Macon, Georgia, on the third of February, 1842, and came from a long line of fine ancestors. His father, Robert S. Lanier, was a prominent lawyer, and his mother was Miss Mary Anderson, a woman of remarkable gift in music and poetry. A friend once remarked, No wonder Lanier is a poet and a genius. The blood that flows through his veins has coursed' in those of artists, poets, musicians, and royal personages. Very early in life Sidney Lanier Showed a pas sion for reading, a talent and fondness for music, and when a mere lad be delighted in forming amateur orchestras of children. Having a keen sense of humor, he often kept the family amused by his mimicry, and later be utilized this faculty of observation in his poems. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poets of the South: A Series of Biographical and Critical Studies With Typical Poems, Annotated The poets of the South, who constitute a worthy galaxy of poetic talent and achievement, are not sufficiently known. Even in the South, which might naturally be expected to take pride in its gifted singers, most of them, it is to be feared, are but little read. This has been called an age of prose. Under the sway of what are regarded as "practical interests," there is a drifting away from poetic sentiment and poetic truth. This tendency is to be regretted, for material prosperity is never at its best without the grace and refinements of true culture. At the present time, as in former ages, the gifted poet is a seer, who reveals to us what is highest and best in life. There is at present a new interest in literature in the South. The people read more; and in recent years an encouraging number of Southern writers have achieved national distinction. With this literary renaissance, there has been a turning back to older authors. It is hoped that this little volume will supply a real need. It is intended to call fresh attention to the poetic achievement of the South. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Year Book of the Poetry Society of South Carolina for 1921 Practically untouched by art, and within the memory of living men, the South has passed through three great phases replete with poetic material, first, the colorful, romantic days before the war, then the tragedies, the sacrifices, and the lifting courage of our rebirth, and now the surgent vital days of our own time, with their strong realism standing out in bas relief against a background of unbelievable color, charm and romance. These things are going to be, must be, expressed, and their underlying ideals interpreted by our own people; but unfortunately, there is little or no opportunity of publication for poetry dealing with Southern themes, especially from the pen of a beginner. The publishers state very definitely what they want, and for what they will pay; and as they are, almost without exception, situated in New York, New England or the Middle West, they are naturally often out of sympathy with and incapable of understanding our needs and aims. She has had access to more than one private collection of verses by Southern writers, and has thus been able to embody here many lyrics that lived a brief and fugitive life in the newspapers of their time and were then forgotten. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Life in Southern Literature: Selections of Representative Prose and Poetry In this book I have endeavored to represent as adequately as might be possible within the limits of a volume of moderate size the work of the more important Southern writers. My attempt has been not merely to show the value of literary effort in the South as absolute achievement but also to emphasize its importance as a record of Southern life and character. Taking literature in the stricter sense of fiction, essay, and poetry, I have omitted the historians, the biographers, and the political writers so frequently used to swell the bulk of Southern literature. In poetry I have endeavored to select poems which have attained some measure of general critical approval. But in some instances, especially in the Civil War poetry, I have included poems obviously without much literary merit because they were household poems of an older generation and embodied in a characteristic way the traditions and spirit of the people who loved them. For much the same reason I have included a few specimens of the vanishing survivals of old English ballads to the presence of which in the South attention has lately been turned. In the case of the older prose writers, I have drawn upon a very limited number of the most significant works. As most of these were out of print or difficult to secure, I have tried to give a general idea of each by means of liberal excerpts and suitable summaries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Poems Selected, Arranged and Edited: With Biographical Notes These poems are selected from the wide range of Southern poetry, that the South's contribution to our national literature may be in part apprehended. For a long time the productions of Southern writers were so inaccessible that authors Of text-books on American Literature were disposed to neglect them altogether; and even later the admission of any Southern author, save one or two of international fame, was somewhat grudging and apologetic. In recent years, especially since the publication of the Library of Southern Literature, by which a new perspective for American literature was afforded, fuller treatment has been accorded these Southern authors; but very few stu dents1 of American literature have yet comprehended clearly and fully that, for some periods of our literary history and in some significant and far-reaching move ments, literature in the South has been the dominant and controlling factor.
