Download or read book Atget's Seven Albums written by Molly Nesbit and published by . This book was released on 1994-08-01 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1909 and 1915 Eugène Atget produced seven albums filled with photographs of Paris at the height of its belle époque. This book presents Atget's albums in full for the first time, edited with the sequencing and repetition that the great photographer intended. In addition, Atget's pictures are analyzed in an altogether new way; as commercial picture documents produced by a photographer for the artists, archivists, antiquarians, designers, and builders who were his clients. Atget's Seven Albums is thus many books-a critical edition, a fresh view of Atget's work, a new kind of history of photography, and a social history of art and of Paris in the early twentieth century.
Book Synopsis The Persian Album, 1400-1600 by : David J. Roxburgh
Download or read book The Persian Album, 1400-1600 written by David J. Roxburgh and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book examines portable art collections assembled in the courts of Greater Iran in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Made for members of the royal families or ruling elites, albums were created to preserve and display art, yet they were conceptualized in different ways. David Roxburgh, a leading expert on Persian albums and the art of the book, discusses this diversity and demonstrates convincingly that to look at the practice of album making is to open a vista to a culture of thought about the Persian art tradition. The book considers the album’s formal and physical properties, assembly, and content, as well as the viewer’s experience. Focusing on seven albums created during the Timurid and Safavid dynasties, Roxburgh reconstructs the history and development of this codex form and uses the works of art to explore notions of how art and aesthetics were conceived in Persian court culture. Generously illustrated with over 175 images, many rare and previously unpublished, the book offers a range of new insights into Persian visual culture as well as Islamic art history.

Book Synopsis Gather Out of Star-dust by : Melissa Barton
Download or read book Gather Out of Star-dust written by Melissa Barton and published by Beinecke Rare Book Library. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gather Out of Star-Dust takes as its central premise that the Harlem Renaissance, known by its participants as the Negro Renaissance, relied heavily on "gatherings" of all kinds. Collaboration, friendship, partnership, and sponsorship were all central to the rise in prominence of African American publication, performance, and visual art. Most importantly, the act of collecting materials from this time subsequently enabled scholars to remember the movement. Gather Out of Star-Dust showcases fifty items from the James Weldon Johnson Memorial Collection of African American Arts and Letters at Beinecke Library. Each of these objects--letters, journal entries, photographs, ephemera, artworks, and first editions--is accompanied by a mini-essay telling a piece of the story about this dynamic period. While numerous scholarly works have been written about this time of rebirth, this book returns us to the primary materials that have made that scholarship possible.
