Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Wonderland of the East, Comprising the Lake and Mountain Region of New England and Eastern New York: A Book for Those Who Love to Wander Among Beautiful Lakes and Rivers, Valleys and Mountains or in Places Made Famous by Historic Men and Events; To Which Is Added an Afterword on the Worth-While in This Wonderland of the East, With Some Suggestions to Mot This is a book of travelogues of sundry motor-car journeys, during four successive seasons, through the woods and the valleys, alongside the rivers and the lakes, and among the hills and the mountains of Eastern New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts and Connecticut, with a side tour through the Finger Lake district of Central New York. It has much to say about the scenery and a little about the history of this fascinating region, and an effort has been made to describe the former as it really is and, in the latter, to be accurate in the brief outlines given. Let it be noted that I speak of a region and not regions. This region, then, though it politically embraces all of the state of Vermont and parts of five other states, is, in the unity of its lake and mountain character, one country; hence the sub-title of the book is - not "The Lakes and Mountains of Eastern New York and New England," which would emphasize its political divisions; but The Lake and Mountain Country of Eastern New York and New England, which stresses its unity. In physical geography, it should be marked off as a distinct region, - one country, as, I think, the Creator intended it to be considered when he fashioned it. In the first chapter, I submit the reasons why this lake and mountain country may justly be looked upon as a Wonderland, A Wonderland of the East. Willmott presents the first of a three-volume appraisal of the strategic policies of the countries involved in the Pacific War. Remarkable in its scope and depth of research, his thoughtful analysis covers the whole range of political, economic, military, and naval activity in the Pacific. This first volume comprehensively covers events between December 1941 and April 1942, concluding with the Doolittle Raid on April 18. When published in hardcover in 1982, the book was hailed as an eloquent portrayal of great empires on trial that no one should miss. Willmott’s stimulating and original approach to the subject remains unmatched even today.
Download or read book Journeys East written by Harry Oldmeadow and published by World Wisdom, Inc. This book was released on 2004 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to treat the impact of religious, philosophical and psychological traditions of the East on Western intellectuals, artists, travellers and spiritual seekers in the twentieth century. Addressed to both general readers and scholars of religion, it is especially valuable for its penetrating and inter-religious analysis of two of the most compelling themes now facing the world: the emergence of cross-cultural religious understanding of the natural order and ecological crisis and the metaphysical basis for both the formal diversity and essential unity of religious traditions of both East and West. The West has long romanticized the "mysterious" East, but it has, also, judged its traditions as "uncivilized." Our notions about Eastern spirituality have been formed by a succession of travellers, scientists, artists, intellectuals, poets, philosophers and missionaries, as well as by Eastern travellers who have spent time in the West. This book helps us to recognize the influence of Eastern ideas upon modern Western thought by tracing the history of engagements between East and West up until the present day. It concludes with a section that helps us to perceive the timeless value of the many Eastern contributions to the West's current intellectual and spiritual state.
