Book excerpt: THE HILARIOUS AND WILDLY POPULAR INSTAGRAM COMIC ABOUT A WORLD WITH NO MEN With her startling humor, it’s no surprise that Aminder Dhaliwal’s web comic Woman World has a devoted audience of over 120,000 readers, updated biweekly with each installment earning an average of 25,000 likes. Now, readers everywhere will delight in the print edition as Dhaliwal seamlessly incorporates feminist philosophical concerns into a series of perfectly-paced strips that skewer perceived notions of femininity and contemporary cultural icons. D+Q’s edition of Woman World will include new and previously unpublished material. When a birth defect wipes out the planet’s entire population of men, Woman World rises out of society’s ashes. Dhaliwal’s infectiously funny instagram comic follows the rebuilding process, tracking a group of women who have rallied together under the flag of “Beyonce’s Thighs.” Only Grandma remembers the distant past, a civilization of segway-riding mall cops, Blockbusters movie rental shops, and “That’s What She Said” jokes. For the most part, Woman World’s residents are focused on their struggles with unrequited love and anxiety, not to mention that whole “survival of humanity” thing. Woman World is an uproarious and insightful graphic novel from a very talented and funny new voice.

Have you chafed under the assumption that men are supposed to know everything? Have you felt the pressures of meeting the expectations of females in your world? If so, this is a book that will speak to you. It addresses frankly but practically the problem of male-female sexual relationships. When is a man ready for marriage? How does a man fulfill a woman's emotional needs? How does a man cope with the women's liberation movement? How does a man cope with the loneliness of divorce? Should a man be willing to accept the limits that other people want to set for him? How does a man find the time to be a good father? Are there spiritual resources on which a man can draw in our world? These and other questions are dealt with in Being a Man in a Woman's World. - Back cover.

More young women than men are getting an education and large organisations are beginning to realize the benefits of female leadership. Research also shows that, when trying to conceive, parents today have a preference for girls, not boys like in the past. At the centre of all this are certain countries in the Northern Hemisphere. It is no coincidence that Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, has the most single person households in the world, or that the world's largest sperm bank is located in Denmark. Nor that Iceland is the world's most gender equal country. We are moving steadily towards a world led by women, for women and on women's terms. This affects the ways in which we live, love and pursue happiness.

As described in the book there are many successes and tragedies in her long life. Those who never met Marie will learn how this woman not only endured but triumphed throughout her 87 years. Marie felt a sisterhood with other women from the time she was a child. She organized each chapter of her book with the name of an important woman in her life. She requested that her memoir be published posthumously by Lila Lizabeth Weisberger, the woman friend she had planned to write about in her final chapter. Sadly, Marie never saw her memoir in print but Lila Weisberger is fulfilling her wish with this publication. Although Marie's life ended before she wrote the last chapters one unexpected writing is added to this book. When she and her husband Bill, were driving home from what turned out to be her last appointment with her oncologist, Marie wrote on a yellow pad which Bill later found on the floor of the car. This writing is included as her final words

Book excerpt: Shetland has a history unique in Europe, for over the past two centuries it was a place where women dominated the family, economy, and the cultural imagination. Women ran households and crofts without men. They maintained families and communities because men were absent. And they constructed in their minds an identity of themselves as 'liberated' long before organised feminism was invented. And yet, Shetland is a place which was made by the most masculine of societies - those of the Picts, Scots and above all the Vikings - and its contemporary identity still draws on the heroic exploits and sagas of medieval Norsemen. This book examines how against this tradition Shetland became a female place, and offers answers as to how, in this most isolated island community, the inhabitants transgressed and reversed their traditional gender roles. Reconstructing this 'woman's world' from fragments of cultural experience captured in written and oral sources, this book will appeal to scholars in the fields of social and cultural history, social anthropology, gender and women's studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would our planet be like if women were in charge ? Would it be different ? What would be the fundamental changes to our lives ? These are the questions Muriel de Saint Sauveur poses to one hundred economically, politically and culturally prominent women, coming from thirty-three countries across five different continents. Amongst them are the Chinese writer and photographer Xiao Hui Wang ; Assana Sangare-Ouattara, deputy of the National Assembly in the Ivory Coast ; the Egyptian businesswoman Loula Zaklama and also French women including Françoise Gri, president of Manpower France and Marie-Jo Zimmermann, president of the French National Assembly’s delegation on women’s rights and gender equality. More involved, more ambitious and less egocentric, their priorities are different to those of men. Economy and strategy are not at the top of their lists, instead they view education as an essential objective towards social emancipation and living together in harmony. Their optimistic perception of the world envisions an organisation different to that of our society today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frances Willard founded the Woman's Christian Temperance Union in 1884 to carry the message of women's emancipation throughout the world. Based in the United States, the WCTU rapidly became an international organization, with affiliates in forty-two countries. Ian Tyrrell tells the extraordinary story of how a handful of women sought to change the mores of the world -- not only by abolishing alcohol but also by promoting peace and attacking prostitution, poverty, and male control of democratic political structures. In describing the work of Mary Leavitt, Jessie Ackermann, and other temperance crusaders on the international scene, Tyrrell identifies the tensions generated by conflict between the WCTU's universalist agenda and its own version of an ideologically and religiously based form of cultural imperialism. The union embraced an international and occasionally ecumenical vision that included a critique of Western materialism and imperialism. But, at the same time, its mission inevitably promoted Anglo-American cultural practices and Protestant evangelical beliefs deemed morally superior by the WCTU. Tyrrell also considers, from a comparative perspective, the peculiar links between feminism, social reform, and evangelical religion in Anglo-American culture that made it so difficult for the WCTU to export its vision of a woman-centered mission to other cultures. Even in other Western states, forging links between feminism and religiously based temperance reform was made virtually impossible by religious, class, and cultural barriers. Thus, the WCTU ultimately failed in its efforts to achieve a sober and pure world, although its members significantly shaped the values of those countries in which it excercised strong influence. As and urgently needed history of the first largescale worldwide women's organization and non-denominational evangelical institution, Woman's World / Woman's Empire will be a valuable resource to scholars in the fields of women's studies, religion, history, and alcohol and temperance studies.
