Book Synopsis Intentionality, Deliberation and Autonomy by : Sandro Nannini
Download or read book Intentionality, Deliberation and Autonomy written by Sandro Nannini and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many important thinkers in the philosophical tradition, like Aristotle or Hume, have used an explicit theory of action as the basis of their respective normative theories of practical rationality and morality. The idea behind this architecture of theories is that action theory can inform us about the origin, bonds, reach and limits of practical reason. The aim of this book is to revive this direct connection between action theory and practical philosophy, in particular to provide systematic action-theoretical underpinnings for the discussion about the normative structure of practical reason. This book brings together a collection of specially commissioned essays from internationally prestigious scholars in the field and represents the state of the art in contemporary philosophy of action. The book is divided into three parts: i. conceptual work about what actions, intentions and intentional actions are; ii. empirical theory of practical deliberation; and iii.theories about the action theoretic features of autonomy. The volume significantly advances these three lines of research and offers important new contributions to each of them.

Book Synopsis Obligation and Responsibility by : Ishtiyaque Haji
Download or read book Obligation and Responsibility written by Ishtiyaque Haji and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This chapter explains the four principal issues that are explored in this book. The four items on the Putative Contrasts List summarize these issues: (1) Both moral responsibility and moral obligation require freedom but whereas, seemingly, the former does not require freedom to do otherwise, the latter does. (2) Semicompatibilism regarding responsibility (or obligation) is the thesis that even if determinism is incompatible with freedom to do otherwise, it is compatible with responsibility (or obligation). Arguably, while responsibility semicompatibilism is plausible, obligation semicompatibilism is far less tenable. (3) Externalism about responsibility or obligation is the view that how you acquire apt antecedents of action, such as beliefs, desires, and values, may influence whether you are responsible for, or are morally obligated to do, something. It appears that whereas responsibility externalism is true, there is little or no reason to believe that obligation externalism is true. (4) While obligations can change with time's passage, blameworthiness cannot. The general conclusion argued for is that the only item on this list that captures a real difference is item (3). Obligation and responsibility are far more similar to each other than items (1), (2), and (4) suggest. A chapter-by-chapter synopsis concludes the discussion"--

Book Synopsis Experimental Philosophy by : Joshua Knobe
Download or read book Experimental Philosophy written by Joshua Knobe and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-07-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental philosophy is a new movement that seeks to return the discipline of philosophy to a focus on questions about how people actually think and feel. Departing from a long-standing tradition, experimental philosophers go out and conduct systematic experiments to reach a better understanding of people's ordinary intuitions about philosophically significant questions. Although the movement is only a few years old, it has already sparked an explosion of new research, challenging a number of cherished assumptions in both philosophy and cognitive science. The present volume provides an introduction to the major themes of work in experimental philosophy, bringing together some of the most influential articles in the field along with a collection of new papers that explore the theoretical significance of this new research.

Download or read book The Director and The Manager written by David S. Fushtey and published by IAP. This book was released on 2019-02-01 with total page 1067 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Machiavelli Had it Easy is an engaging text for the emerging discipline of governance. Gaps arise when directors and managers come together from diverse vocational and cultural languages and interests. Compressed information streams in the digital age, yet few reconcile silos of business, legal expertise and regulatory public-interests for informed decisions. This text presents research and a market-tested decision-framework for comparative law, market practice, and human nature in the vital strategic-oversight role of governance. Informed by cognitive science, business practice and legal duties, one conclusion is that bias and self-interests are instinctive but reconciling best-interests is not. Too often lessons learned from centuries of law are overlooked. The chapters are a dozen inquiries into recurring problems in the boardroom. Part one is an entry-level technical reference of law and governance principles. Unique appendices of keywords and case notes will aid those new to markets governed by the western rule-of-law and those tripping on gaps in comparative jargon. Part two is a series of practical hot-topics in the context of law and governance; part three looks to next steps in accountability and liability. The text will help accountants, engineers, lawyers, and business operations and market-policy experts from around the world work together, and; professors, professionals and students anticipate change. After drilling through accountability and liability for hybrid organizations, typical crises are revealed to be from a lack of aligning interests and related information churn. Conclusions of the how and why of governance systems link the human condition and the rule-of-law in the digital age.
