Book excerpt: Progress in the study of galaxy evolution has traditionally followed from improvements in spectroscopic measurement techniques and subsequent groundbreaking surveys. The advent of large format CCD detectors, coupled with the demonstrated success of the photometric redshift method, has given rise to a new, potentially very powerful alternative. It has, in fact, motivated the present detailed investigation of the potential of photometric redshift surveys to complement, or in some cases, supersede traditional spectroscopic surveys in galaxy evolution studies. This Thesis describes a new deep, wide-field, multi-colour imaging survey, 10 times deeper and 30 times larger than its spectroscopic predecessor, the Canada-France Redshift Survey (CFRS). Highly accurate photometric redshifts, calibrated using hundreds of spectroscopic CFRS galaxies, were measured for tens of thousands of objects, with typical dispersions of only sigma/(1 + z) & lsim; 0.06 to IAB = 24 for z & le; 1.3. For the 1- and 2-point statistics of the galaxy distribution studied in this Thesis, the measurement accuracy is limited not by the photometric redshift error, but rather by the effect of cosmic variance, whose contribution to the total error budget is dominant. Therefore, future studies will be well served by adopting the photometric redshift approach, the efficiency of which will enable them to survey the hundreds or thousands of square degrees required to obtain a fair sample of the Universe. We measure the evolution of galaxy correlations with redshift, a primary observable of the structure formation process, correcting for the dilutive effect of photometric redshift errors on the clustering signal. The high z & sim; 3 correlation amplitude seen in this work provides compelling evidence for the biased galaxy formation paradigm. The measured galaxy correlations from 0 & lsim; z & lsim; 3 are in excellent agreement with the findings of the largest, state-of-the-art spectroscopic studies. A new Bayesian method to measure the galaxy redshift distribution is developed. The accuracy of the method, which incorporates the full redshift likelihood function of each galaxy in an iterative analysis, is demonstrated in extensive Monte Carlo simulations. IAB and RAB redshift distributions, along with the run of median redshifts, are measured in various magnitude ranges, with special attention given to quantifying both random and systematic errors.

Using early data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and publicly released data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), this dissertation explores the evolution of cluster galaxies in the redshift range from 0 to 1.0. As it is common for deep wide field sky surveys like DES to struggle with galaxy detection efficiency at cluster core, the first component of this dissertation describes an efficient package that helps resolving the issue. The second part focuses on the formation of cluster galaxies. The study quantifies the growth of cluster bright central galaxies (BCGs), and argues for the importance of merging and intra-cluster light production during BCG evolution. An analysis of cluster red sequence galaxy luminosity function is also performed, demonstrating that the abundance of these galaxies is mildly dependent on cluster mass and redshift. The last component of the dissertation characterizes the properties of galaxy filaments to help understanding cluster environments.

Book excerpt: The XMM-Newton - Blanco Cosmology Survey project (XMM-BCS) is a coordinated X-ray, optical and mid-infrared cluster survey in a field also covered by Sunyaev-Zel dovich effect (SZE) surveys by the South Pole Telescope and the Atacama Cosmology Telescope. The aim of the project is to study the cluster population in a 14 deg2 field (center: [alpha] H"23:29:18.4, [delta] H"-54:40:33.6). The uniform multi-wavelength coverage will also allow us for the first time to comprehensively compare the selection function of the different cluster detection approaches in a single test field and perform a cross-calibration of cluster scaling relations. In this work, we present a catalog of 46 X-ray selected clusters from the initial 6 deg2 survey core. We describe the XMM-BCS source detection pipeline and derive physical properties of the clusters. We provide photometric redshift estimates derived from the BCS imaging data and spectroscopic redshift measurements for a low redshift subset of the clusters. The photometric redshift estimates are found to be unbiased and in good agreement with the spectroscopic values. Our multi-wavelength approach gives us a comprehensive look at the cluster and group population up to redshifts z H"1. The median redshift of the sample is 0.47 and the median mass M500 H"1 x 1014 M{sub {circle_dot}} (H"2 keV). From the sample, we derive the cluster log N - log S using an approximation to the survey selection function and find it in good agreement with previous studies. We compare optical mass estimates from the Southern Cosmology Survey available for part of our cluster sample with our estimates derived from the X-ray luminosity. Weak lensing masses available for a subset of the cluster sample are in agreement with our estimates. Optical masses based on cluster richness and total optical luminosity are found to be significantly higher than the X-ray values. The present results illustrate the excellent potential of medium-deep, X-ray surveys to deliver cluster samples for cosmological modelling. In combination with available multi-wavelength data in optical, near-infrared and SZE, this will allow us to probe the dependence of the selection functions on relevant cluster observables and provide thus an important input for upcoming large-area multi-wavelength cluster surveys.

Book excerpt: The Andromeda Galaxy (M31) is the closest large galaxy to the Milky Way, thus it is an important laboratory for studying massive dark objects in galactic halos (MACHOs) by gravitational microlensing. Such studies strongly complement the studies of the Milky Way halo using the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. We consider the possibilities for microlensing surveys of M31 using the next generation of wide field imaging telescopes with fields of view in the square degree range. We consider proposals for such imagers both on the ground and in space. For concreteness, we specialize to the SNAP proposal for a space telescope and the LSST proposal for a ground based telescope. We find that a modest space-based survey of 50 visits of one hour each is considerably better than current ground based surveys covering 5 years. Crucially, systematic effects can be considerably better controlled with a space telescope because of both the infrared sensitivity and the angular resolution. To be competitive, 8 meter class wide-field ground based imagers must take exposures of several hundred seconds with several day cadence.

Book excerpt: We present an HST/ACS weak gravitational lensing analysis of 13 massive high-redshift (z_median=0.88) galaxy clusters discovered in the South Pole Telescope (SPT) Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Survey. This study is part of a larger campaign that aims to robustly calibrate mass-observable scaling relations over a wide range in redshift to enable improved cosmological constraints from the SPT cluster sample. We introduce new strategies to ensure that systematics in the lensing analysis do not degrade constraints on cluster scaling relations significantly. First, we efficiently remove cluster members from the source sample by selecting very blue galaxies in V-I colour. Our estimate of the source redshift distribution is based on CANDELS data, where we carefully mimic the source selection criteria of the cluster fields. We apply a statistical correction for systematic photometric redshift errors as derived from Hubble Ultra Deep Field data and verified through spatial cross-correlations. We account for the impact of lensing magnification on the source redshift distribution, finding that this is particularly relevant for shallower surveys. Finally, we account for biases in the mass modelling caused by miscentring and uncertainties in the mass-concentration relation using simulations. In combination with temperature estimates from Chandra we constrain the normalisation of the mass-temperature scaling relation ln(E(z) M_500c/10^14 M_sun)=A+1.5 ln(kT/7.2keV) to A=1.81^{+0.24}_{-0.14}(stat.) +/- 0.09(sys.), consistent with self-similar redshift evolution when compared to lower redshift samples. Additionally, the lensing data constrain the average concentration of the clusters to c_200c=5.6^{+3.7}_{-1.8}.

Book excerpt: Proto-clusters, the distant progenitor large-scale structures of present day galaxy clusters, represent a key phase of cluster growth during which most of the galaxies were still rapidly forming stars. They are potentially powerful cosmological probes, and are unique laboratories to study dark matter assembly, the cosmic baryon cycle, and the environmental impact on galaxy evolution. Albeit its pivotal role in understanding cluster formation, only a small and heterogeneous sample of proto-clusters has been observed to date. Theoretical characterizations have also remained relatively unexplored. In this dissertation, I present baseline models, detailed theory predictions, and broad observational applications of proto-clusters using state-of-the-art numerical simulations and deep-wide galaxy surveys. A dual focus of both structure formation and galaxy evolution is given throughout the thesis. To prepare for large statistical studies in upcoming surveys like the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX), the Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) survey, and the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) survey, I develop key machinery to connect the main observables of proto-clusters with dark matter structure formation using simulations as a guide. In Chapter 2 and 3, I present, for the first time, a thorough analysis of the main properties of proto-clusters using ~3000 clusters in a set of cosmological N-body simulations and semi-analytic galaxy models. I characterize the growth of proto-clusters and their core halos in size and mass with cosmic time. I show that the progenitor regions of galaxy clusters can already be identified in galaxy surveys at very early times (at least up to z~5), provided that the galaxy overdensities are measured on a sufficiently large scale (5--30 Mpc comoving) and with sufficient statistics. I present the overdensities in matter, dark matter halos, and galaxies as functions of present-day cluster mass, redshift, bias, and selection window size that can be used to interpret the wide range of structures found in real surveys. A table of proto-cluster candidates selected from the literature is provided, and I discuss their properties in light of our simulation predictions. In Chapter 4 I report the discovery of a large sample of proto-cluster candidates in the 1.62 deg^2 COSMOS/UltraVISTA field traced by optical/infrared selected galaxies with photometric redshifts. By comparing properly smoothed three-dimensional galaxy density maps of the observations and a set of matched simulations incorporating the main observational effects, I found 36 candidate structures at 1.610^14} M_sun. With solely photometric redshifts, I successfully rediscover two spectroscopically confirmed structures in this field, suggesting that our algorithm is robust. This work is the first large sample of uniformly selected proto-cluster candidates, providing rich targets for spectroscopic follow-up and subsequent studies of cluster formation. Because of the need of precise galaxy redshifts for density mapping and the prevalence of star formation before quenching, nearly all the proto-clusters known to date were confirmed by spectroscopy of galaxies with strong emission lines. In Chapter 5 I develop a semi-empirical model for Lya escape and generate a set of mock Lya emitter catalogs. This formalism provides a realistic modeling of the galaxy bias, the scatter of the bias, and the stochasticity of the galaxy-dark matter halo connection, which has an enormous potential for studies of the large-scale structure at high redshift. The model suggests that there are two distinct regimes to power a Lya emitter. For massive galaxies, Lya emitters are preferentially less dusty and slightly less metal enriched, while their ages and star formation rates are indistinguishable from other star-forming galaxies of the same mass. Book excerpt: We present a modified adaptive matched filter algorithm designed to identify clusters of galaxies in wide-field imaging surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The cluster-finding technique is fully adaptive to imaging surveys with spectroscopic coverage, multicolor photometric redshifts, no redshift information at all, and any combination of these within one survey. It works with high efficiency in multi-band imaging surveys where photometric redshifts can be estimated with well-understood error distributions. Tests of the algorithm on realistic mock SDSS catalogs suggest that the detected sample is H"85% complete and over 90% pure for clusters with masses above 1.0 x 1014h−1 M and redshifts up to z = 0.45. The errors of estimated cluster redshifts from maximum likelihood method are shown to be small (typically less that 0.01) over the whole redshift range with photometric redshift errors typical of those found in the Sloan survey. Inside the spherical radius corresponding to a galaxy overdensity of? = 200, we find the derived cluster richness?200 a roughly linear indicator of its virial mass M200, which well recovers the relation between total luminosity and cluster mass of the input simulation.

The discovery of cosmic acceleration dramatically changed our understanding about the evolution and constituents of the Universe. To accommodate the new acceleration phase into our well established Big Bang cosmological scenario under the frame work of General Relativity, there must exist a very special substance that has negative pressure and make up about 73% of the total energy density in our Universe. It is called Dark Energy. For the first time people realized that the vast majority of our Universe is made of things that are totally different from the things we are made of. Therefore, one of the major endeavors in physics and astronomy in the coming years is trying to understand, if we can, the nature of dark energy. Understanding dark energy cannot be achieved from pure logic. We need empirical evidence to finally determine about what is dark energy. The better we can constrain the energy density and evolution of the dark energy, the closer we will get to the answer. There are many ways to constrain the energy density and evolution of dark energy, each of which leads to degeneracy in certain directions in the parameter space. Therefore, a combination of complimentary methods will help to reduce the degeneracies and give tighter constraints. Dark energy became dominate over matter in the Universe only very recently (at about z (almost equal to) 1.5) and will affect both the cosmological geometry and large scale structure formation. Among the various experiments, some of them constrain the dark energy mainly via geometry (such as CMB, Supernovae) while some others provides constraints from both structures and geometry (such as BAO, Galaxy Clusters) Galaxy clusters can be used as a sensitive probe for cosmology. A large cluster catalog that extends to high redshift with well measured masses is indispensable for precisely constraining cosmological parameters. Detecting clusters in optical bands is very efficient. Multi-color CCD photometry allows combined detection and redshift estimation for clusters across broad redshift ranges. However, the lack of precise information about galaxy positions along the line of sight leads to contamination by projection, which plagues both cluster detection and the measurement of their properties. The dominance of red sequence galaxies, tightly clustered along the E/S0 ridgeline, provides a powerful method for de-projecting field galaxies. We developed an Error Corrected Gaussian Mixture Model to fit the galaxies color distribution around clusters by taking into account the measurement errors. By this technique, we can detect the red sequence color clustering and extract unbiased information about the evolution of the red sequence ridgeline and its width. Precision measurements of ridgelines yields better estimates of cluster richness and possibly their dynamical state, leading to better estimates of cluster mass. By using the red sequence clustering in color space identified from the Error Corrected Gaussian Mixture Model, together with the projected NFW filter in the projected RA/DEC plane, we developed a new and efficient cluster finding algorithm that can reliably detect galaxy clusters across the redshift range from 0.1 to 1.4. We have also run the cluster finder on legacy SDSS DR7 data and assembled an approximately volume limited cluster catalog across redshifts from 0.1 to 0.5. The algorithm has been tested against a Monte Carlo mock catalog, showing the identified clusters are highly complete and pure. With the completion of this thesis, we build the first and essential step towards precision cluster cosmology. Meanwhile, the large optical cluster catalog across a wide redshift range makes possible the systematic and detailed investigation of cluster formation and evolution.
