Book excerpt: The fast-growing body of postcolonial drama is progressively gaining its just recognition in the twentieth-century canon of English-language plays. From the vantage point of various samplings along the Trans-Pacific axis linking English Canada, Australia and New Zealand, this monograph seeks to document the significance of this emerging postcolonial theater. More specifically, it examines the myriad ways in which, over the last two decades, representative mainstream, ethnic and First Nations playwrights have dramatized Europe's «Other» in its multiple guises. In their efforts to match new content with innovative form, these artists have followed transgressive itineraries, redrawing the boundaries of conventional Western stage realism. Their new aesthetics often relies on techniques akin to Homi Bhabha's notions of hybridity and mimicry. The present study offers detailed analyses of the modes of hybridization through which Judith Thompson, Louis Nowra, Tomson Highway, Jack Davis, Hone Kouka, and other prominent writers have articulated subtle forms of psychic, grotesque, and mythic magic realism. Their legacy will undoubtedly affect the postcolonial dramaturgies of the twenty-first century.

His actions and excessive punishments aimed at breaking down a select few pranksters would only serve as a rallying point to unify the student body and faculty to support the targets of his vengeance.

I eventually served thirty years as a rural family practice physician and fourteen years as coroner of a mid-sized Louisiana parish. I strive to add and discuss more pertinent information regarding my life experiences that was previously erroneously but unintentionally omitted and address many of the questions that arose unanswered, along with relating more gruesome and mischievous incidents, including a more recent mishap that left me with a slight handicap. I discuss the countless problems that I faced while treating my patients, relate my numerous conflicts with various governmental agencies and organizations, and detail many unusual cases that helped mold my life and influenced my decisions. I also reveal even more of my innermost secrets and confessions during my practice, and I elaborate further on my bipolar illness and its impact on my life. I feel that this book is a must-read for bipolar individuals who should have no problems identifying with me.

The photographs and stories are of the Virgin Islands Orchestra and the Virgin Islands 872nd and 873rd Port Companies and their military journey in Puerto Rico, New Orleans, Louisiana and Hawaii. The photographs also include the VJ Day Parade in Oahu, Hawaii in 1945 at the end of World War II, the 1946 Tsunami in Hawaii, the men working, on furlough or the orchestra playing in New Orleans and Hawaii in addition to life after service. Also included are newspaper clippings from the local newspapers as those back home kept track of the enlisted men's activities. The book also has a glossary. Will was instrumental in organizing the Virgin Islands Orchestra. The music of the orchestra provided a distraction from a segregated army and the Jim Crow laws that Virgin Islanders would not get accustomed to. The orchestra was well received wherever they were stationed, for their unique style of music such as quelbe, Latin music, popular big band music and military marches. Members of the 873rd Port Company contributed greatly to the US. Virgin Islands after military discharge and produced the 2nd and 4th elected governors of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Cyril E. King and Alexander A. Farrelly, legislators, commissioners, successful businessmen, many in government and public service, in addition to several members of the Virgin Islands Orchestra who continued to share their musical talents in the Virgin Islands.
