Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Walk in and About the City of Canterbury: With Many Observations Not to Be Found in Any Description Hitherto Published I give this little book a preface to ap prize my reader, that it is not merely an abstract of others written on the same subject, (though they are often mentioned in it, ) but such an actual survey as the title promises, and he himself may take if he pleases; designed not only to assist strangers in their searches after what is curious here, but to make the inhabitants sensible, that many things are so, which they may have seen over and over with out taking notice of them. In 1640, the eminently learned and laborious Mr. William Somner published the History and Antiquities of Canter bury, his native place, in quarto. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than six hundred years ago, the Archbishop of Canterbury was murdered by King Henry II’s knights. Before the Archbishop’s blood dried on the Cathedral floor, the miracles began. The number of pilgrims visiting his shrine in the Middle Ages was so massive that the stone floor wore thin where they knelt to pray. They came seeking healing, penance, or a sign from God. Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, one of the greatest, most enduring works of English literature, is a bigger-than-life drama based on the experience of the medieval pilgrim. Power, politics, friendship, betrayal, martyrdom, miracles, and stories all had a place on the sixty mile path from London to Canterbury, known as the Pilgrim’s Way. Walking to Canterbury is Jerry Ellis’s moving and fascinating account of his own modern pilgrimage along that famous path. Filled with incredible details about medieval life, Ellis’s tale strikingly juxtaposes the contemporary world he passes through on his long hike with the history that peeks out from behind an ancient stone wall or a church. Carrying everything he needs on his back, Ellis stops at pubs and taverns for food and shelter and trades tales with the truly captivating people he meets along the way, just as the pilgrims from the twelfth century would have done. Embarking on a journey that is spiritual and historical, Ellis reveals the wonders of an ancient trek through modern England toward the ultimate goal: enlightenment.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canterbury: A Historical and Topographical Account of the City In 1884, the year after his translation from Truro to Canterbury, I was asked by Dr. Edward White Benson to write a short history of the City of Canterbury, as the Archbishop was not able to lay his hands on any one book that gave the information that many desired to have. Such a request I regarded almost as a command, more especially as Dr. Benson had rendered me much kindly service at the time when he was Chancellor of Lincoln, and when I had occasion to frequently consult the chapter muniments of that minster. The project, however, through stress of other work, got no further than a scheme of procedure, which was submitted to the Archbishop and met with his approval, and the collection of some material. Since that time the local guide-books have materially improved, and the idea of this small book had been abandoned, until - nearly twenty years after - my friend Professor Windle, in arranging a series of books on old English towns for Messrs. Methuen, asked me to undertake the volume on Canterbury. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a study of how the poetry of Chaucer continued to give pleasure in the eighteenth century despite the immense linguistic, literary, and cultural shifts that had occurred in the intervening centuries. It explores translations and imitations of Chaucer's work by Dryden, Pope, and other poets (including Samuel Cobb, John Dart, Christopher Smart, Jane Brereton, William Wordsworth, and Leigh Hunt) from the early eighteenth to the early nineteenth centuries, as well as investigating the beginnings of modern Chaucer editing and biography. It pays particular attention to critical responses to Chaucer by Dryden and the brothers Warton, and includes a chapter on the oblique presence of Chaucer in Samuel Johnson's Dictionary. It explores the ways in which Chaucer's poetry (including several works now known not to be by him) was described, refashioned, reimagined, and understood several centuries after its initial appearance. It also documents the way that views of Chaucer's own character were inferred from his work. The book combines detailed discussion of particular critical and poetic texts, many of them unfamiliar to modern readers, with larger suggestions about the ways in which poetry of the past is received in the future.
