Book excerpt: Almost everyone has a favorite creek or lake for hiking, kayaking, or contemplation. There is something soothing, animating, inspiring about great bodies of water. From a certain angle, lakes and ponds seem to have personalities of their own; at the very least, each has character. In this collection of haiku, Spring Lake--as well as its denizens and visitors--comes alive for Robert Epstein as did Walden Pond for Henry D. Thoreau, to whom this book is dedicated. Around the Lake are young mothers planning their daughters' dance careers; dog walkers and joggers galore; even an old man whose life ends peacefully one December afternoon. In the right frame of mind, you too may find yourself at home on a park bench, gazing dreamily into a lake that the author of Walden called the earth's eye-a window through which the soul of the world, as well as one's own, may be revealed.

Book excerpt: Spring Lake, North Carolina, was incorporated on April 9, 1951, with an estimated population of 2,500; however, the area had been settled by the Scottish long before. Spring Lake was named in 1923 for a spring fed lake, which probably formed when the railroad was built about 1860. The community grew slowly until World War II. At its incorporation, the town selected the post office on Main Street as the center of town. The town limits extended only eight-tenths of a mile from its center, but increased rapidly as nearby Fort Bragg was built up. Today, Spring Lake remains a quaint town of 8,000, with its close ties to nearby Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base recognized in the town motto, Unity for Prosperity.

Book excerpt: Thirteen-year-old David O’Rourke is living an uneventful life in sleepy Spring Lake until Father Eli arrives. David is deemed a fledgling modern-day knight, and at Father Eli’s request, he and his classmate, Jon Clark, are chosen to embark on a quest to find a missing chalice that holds great importance to Father Eli and the Church. Together, David and Jon unravel mysteries hidden in plain sight to complete their mission. Under the tutelage of Father Eli and Police Chief Mike Trout, they learn more about their own purposes, their roles as sons and brothers, and their divine destinies. They also become aware of an invisible power that makes all things possible. “WOW! Steve Kenny takes us on a fast-paced thriller that is at once a fresh look at a coming-of-age story that finds manhood in virtue and goodness instead of drugs and sex. This book is a call to arms for Catholics everywhere who feel their families besieged by our culture, and an almost poetic idyll on the beautiful seaside town of Spring Lake, all wrapped within a mysterious page-turner that will leave you on the edge of your seat to its glorious last page. A triumphant debut!” - Steve Auth, Author, Pilgrimage to the Museum and Missionary of Wall Street. “In the Beginning is a redeeming story that captivates the reader while highlighting the Catholic faith in a positive light. This is a great read for young people or anyone who enjoys novels about virtue, heroism, and faith.” - Everett Fritz, Catholic Speaker and Author, Founder of Andrew Ministries. “A beautiful story, set in a quiet Jersey Shore community, that reveals how young people see and respond in today’s world. We experience their growth through the lens of wonder and discovery. The reader witnesses the positive influence of a good Catholic priest and is reminded of a beautiful Catholic Church that many have forgotten. The reader will be immersed in the Church’s beauty while being formed by its teachings. I strongly recommend this book to families, especially those who desire to grow together in their faith.” - Mario Costabile, Founder and Executive Director, Array of Hope.

Both are part of Griffith Park, a place visited by more than 10 million people each year--more than Yosemite and Grand Canyon National Parks combined. Rugged and vast, the 4,511-acre Griffith Park encompasses a sprawling 70-mile long network of trails, ranging from paved paths through manicured landscapes to challenging ridgeline climbs, and is a destination for hikers, trail runners, cyclists, equestrians, picnickers, and museum-goers. It’s a unique outdoor space in a city that is not well known for its outdoor amenities. Discovering Griffith Park uses the park’s extensive trail network as an anchor to explore the park in full, whether on foot, wheel, or hoof. Readers will also find out where the best views of the Hollywood sign are, where they can catch free Shakespeare on summer evenings, and how to attend one of the legendary Los Angeles Breakfast Club meetings for good food, good friends, and a bit of early morning learning

Kimmel touches on them all with the affectionate and knowledgeable voice of one whose own life has been closely linked to the San Marcos. As readers journey with Kimmel from the river's headwater springs to its junction with the Guadalupe River, The San Marcos: A River's Story will capture the imagination and provide valuable information about the river and its crucial role in the ecological health of Texas. Original photographs by Jerry Touchstone Kimmel add a sense of the beauty and complexity of the river.

He was a man of great physical, mental, and spiritual strength, a Catholic Priest who served in Kenya for thirty-six years and was then murdered, most likely by government officials. He was a man of unbelievable courage, loyalty, and dedication to his calling as pastor to the poor of Kenya. A man of true grit, he was one who wanted nothing more than to serve and protect the poor and innocent. His story speaks of murder and genocide witnessed at the hands of the Kenya government, the rape of young women by top officials, lies and cover-ups in government-sponsored murders which were routinely passed off as “suicides”.
