Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Visit to German Schools This little book was founded on Notes taken by Mr. Payne during his tour in the autumn of 1874, and reduced to its present shape in the spring of 1875. Various causes hindered its publication until, after my fathers return from his summer journey, the state of his own health and the shock of a painful bereavement made it impossible for him to give any further attention to the subject. The manuscript accordingly remained untouched up to the close of the Author's life and labours in April 1876, and was thus never fully prepared for the press, or finally corrected. Notwithstanding this drawback, and although the information conveyed is not perfectly recent, these brief notes cannot, it is thought, fail to be of value and interest, as recording the direct impressions, and embodying the mature judgment of a highly-qualified observer in matters of education. One explanation only it seems desirable to make. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the History of Education: With a Visit to German Schools The lectures on the History of Education contained in the volume now published include the third part of the course delivered by Mr. Payne as Professor of the Science and Art of Education at the College of Preceptors. The manuscript from which these lectures were given, though altered and partly re-written during successive years, is in parts very fragmentary, and was never prepared by the author in a form suitable for publication. The obvious omissions and breaks of continuity which are certain to be found in the manuscript of a discourse intended for oral delivery, would doubtless have been filled up at the time by extemporaneous additions, and by passages read from the authors spoken of. Notwithstanding'these drawbacks, I have not thought it right to alter the text in any essential points, or to attempt to give it a completeness which could only have been given by some editor as familiar with the subject as the author. The alterations have been confined to the insertion of words or paragraphs necessary to complete the sense, and of extracts which would probably have formed part of the discourse as actually delivered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on German Schools: With Special Relation to Curriculum, and Methods of Teaching This book is not a treatise on German education as a whole. Not months, but years Of patient inquiry would be necessary to undertake such a task. I rather hoped by confining my work within narrower limits to accomplish something of more permanent value. I had endeavoured, before visiting the country, to prepare myself by a careful perusal of all available reports on German education, and as many of the Official syllabuses of work as I could Obtain. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The System in German Schools We often hear or read of the German School System, but we must use this term advisedly and not to understand that the schools of the German Empire are under one head or authority. There are twenty - six States in the German Empire, including the free cities of Hamburg, Bremen, and Luebeck, each of which has its own system and is in no way connected officially with any other State. In fact, edu cation ln the German Empire, as in our own country, is left entirely to the individual States, yet the schools throughout the Empire are very much alike and similar in quality. There are several reasons for this. In the first place the courses in the Hoehere Schulen (secondary and College Education), are governed by the requirements of the Universities which are practically the same for the twenty-three Universities of the German Empire. The Classmal Gymnasium was the principal school until in the year 1900 when the King of Prus sia issued a decree admitting the graduates from the Reform Schools to the Universities on equal terms with those of the old Gymnasium. Since that time the growth of the Re fonm Schools, in which there is less emphasis put upon Latin and Greek or in which these subjects are made elective, has been very rapid. There is no question that the best teach ing, the most enthusiastic teachers, and the best equipment are found in the Reform Schools. There is likewise no question that the growth in these schools will increase in the future. The teachers of the Classical Schools fight the Reform Schools and insist that there is an effort made by the teachers in them to Almericanize the German Schools. In spite of this opposition, as in our own land, the people are turning more and more to these schools and are neglecting the study of the Ancient Classics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Methods of Teaching English in Germany HE following Espart deals with a visit to German schools, extending from January 21 to April 41, 1906, which was made with the object of observing methods of teaching English in that country. The list of schools to be visited was supplied by the English Education Office, who were also good enough to obtain the necessary permit from the German Government. It is not for me here to express any thanks to that Government; this has already been done by the authorities concerned; but I may say on behalf of myself, and no doubt of all Indiaii readers, tint we. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Schools of England and Germany This sketch of the schools of England and Germany was prepared with two objects in view: - (1) To indicate the development of public opinion with regard to education, and the form, which legislation assumed in solving the educational problems which pressed upon public attention; and (2) to show what courses of study educators abroad deemed the most suitable for the different grades of schools, and what machinery was used in carrying on such courses by those responsible for the administration of educational affairs. This involved the consideration of the different grades of schools, the accommodation of pupils, the training and licensing of teachers, inspection, State aid to education, etc. In preparing this sketch I have drawn very freely upon the reports of other writers. In many cases I have used the language of these writers without indicating in every case the quotations I have made, so as not to disturb the continuity of my narrative. Every reference to practical work, however, which a visitor could see for himself, whether the language is my own or not, I have verified by personal observation. Official regulations are given in extenso in appendices for the benefit of those more immediately concerned in the administration of our school system. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Higher Schools: The History, Organization and Methods of Secondary Education in Germany The study as a whole, while demanding some familiarity with books, is much more indebted to the personal factor. Without the acquaintance and assistance of many German educationists it would have remained impossible for me to interpret the mass of material that has come to my hands. I cannot speak too highly of the many favours which were so freely extended to a very inquisitive and persistent stranger. The men whom I most wanted to consult were men fully occupied in places of great responsibility, but I could always count on a generous allotment of their time. To some of these friends I am indebted not only for personal interviews, but also for searching criticisms of parts of my manuscript. It is not their fault if I have gone astray any errors of fact or judgment herein contained are my own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of German in Secondary Schools Some definite work has already been done in the United States towards putting modern language instruction upon a better basis as regards aim and method; for example, Reform the report1 presented by the Committee of Movement Twelve, at the session of the Modern Lan 1 U' s. A' guage Association held in Charlottesville, Va., in 1898. It is an attempt, by way of recommendation, to bring about some degree Of harmony in the rather chaotic conditions that naturally exist in a nation so educationally decentralized as our own. Though brief, the report is com prehensive and practical, and deserves the careful study of every modern language teacher. After dealing with the aim and value Of modern languages as a culture study, there follows a brief sketch and critique of some of the well-known systems or methods. The report then seeks to build up, from this preliminary discussion, a course more or less eclectic in method, to suit our conditions. Very valuable are the suggestions given to teachers, and everywhere the report is characterized by a wise conservatism, so desirable in the present status of modern language work in the United States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Auxiliary Schools of Germany Department of the Interior, Bureau of Education, Washington October 12 1907.Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith a translation, prepared at my request by Professor Dresslar, of the University of California, of a recent account of the auxiliary schools (Hilfsschulen) of Germany, and to recommend its publication as an issue of the Bulletin of the Bureau of Education. The problem of proper provision for exceptional children, and especially for backward children, in our great city systems of schools, has long been recognized as one of great importance. It has to do not only with the welfare of the children immediately concerned, but with that of all other children in the same schools; for the necessity of devoting extraordinary care and attention to a few backward members of the class not infrequently prevents the teacher from giving due care and attention to the larger number of normally endowed members. For both reasons, our city school authorities within the past few years have devoted much attention to ungraded classes and other special provision for these exceptional children. It is believed that an account of a parallel movement in Germany, where it has had a longer history and has reached a more advanced organization, will be of use to those who are furthering this movement in America. No one will suppose that German experience may be fitted without modification into an American situation. Our people welcome educational suggestions from abroad as they welcome desirable immigrants. They recognize them as capable of naturalization, with something good to offer that we did not have before. In the second or third generation, if not earlier, these newcomers become American through and through. Having a vigorous native stock to begin with, we can exercise such hospitality with all freedom, and in it lies the hope of a great enrichment of our national life. The lectures of Doctor Maennel here presented in free translation, together with his bibliographies, constitute the best account which I have yet seen of this phase of German education, and as such I believe the publication will be widely useful in this country. Very respectfully, Elmer Ellsworth Brown, Commissioner. The Secretary of the Interior. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
