Book Synopsis Why Heaven Kissed Earth by : Mark Jones
Download or read book Why Heaven Kissed Earth written by Mark Jones and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2010-10-27 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In short, the central argument of this study posits that Goodwin's Christology is grounded in, and flows out of, the eternal covenant of redemption, also known as the pactum salutis or »counsel of peace«. That is to say, his Christology does not begin in the temporal realm at the incarnation, but stretches back into eternity when the persons of the Trinity covenanted to bring about the salvation of fallen mankind. Goodwin's Christology moves from the pretemporal realm to the temporal realm with a decidedly eschatological thrust, that is, with a view to the glory of the God-man, Jesus Christ. What this work does is connect two vital aspects of Reformed theology, namely, the doctrine of Christ and the concept of the covenant. The findings of this study show that, for Goodwin, Christ is the Christ of the covenant.

Book Synopsis The Claims of Truth by : Carl Trueman
Download or read book The Claims of Truth written by Carl Trueman and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2022-01-03 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carl Trueman analyses the theology of the great Puritan theologian, John Owen, paying particular attention to his vigorous trinitarianism. To understand Owen, we need to see him as a seventeenth-century representative of the Western trinitarian and anti-Pelagian tradition. Trueman demonstrates how Owen used the theological insights of patristic, medieval, and Reformation theologians to meet the challenges posed to Reformed Orthodoxy by his contemporaries. A picture emerges of a theologian whose thought represented a critical reappropriation of aspects of the Western tradition for the purpose of developing a systematic restatement of Reformed theology capable of withstanding the assaults of both the subtly heterodox and the openly heretical. Table of Contents: 1. Owen in Context 2. The Principles of Theology 3. The Doctrine of God 4. The Person and Work of Christ 5. The Nature of Satisfaction 6. The Man Who Wasn’t There Appendix One: The Role of Aristotelian Teleology in Owen’s Doctrine of Atonement Appendix Two: Owen, Baxter, and the Threefold Office

Book excerpt: To this groundbreaking work, originally published by theÊOxford University Press in the 1980s, the author has added a new preface and two appendices, oneÊof which consists of extracts from Calvin's Commentaries. The author demonstrates that the English Puritans, who he calls experimental predestinarians, were followers of John Calvin's successor inÊGeneva, Theodore Beza, and not of Calvin himself. R. T. Kendall maintains that what became knownÊas English Calvinism was largely the thought of Beza, not Calvin. His book is an importantÊclarification of Calvin's position in relation to those who have been regarded as his followers.

Book Synopsis Communion with God by : Kelly M. Kapic
Download or read book Communion with God written by Kelly M. Kapic and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent resurgence of interest in the Puritan John Owen has resulted in increasing requests for Kelly Kapic's Communion with God, which was one of the books that helped foster renewed attention on this classic theologian. This book is now back in print with a new preface by the author. According to Kapic, a variety of people today are rediscovering Owen, including academic theologians, ministers from different denominational backgrounds, and laypeople interested in classic forms of spirituality. With this diverse audience in mind, Kapic focuses on the concept of communion with God in Owen's thought, covering key areas such as anthropology, Christology, trinitarian studies, and the Lord's supper. Kapic shows that Owen remains a rich dialogue partner for those engaged both in contemporary theology and pastoral practice.
Book Synopsis The Covenant of Grace in Puritan Thought by : John Von Rohr
Download or read book The Covenant of Grace in Puritan Thought written by John Von Rohr and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive account of the major theological themes in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century Puritanism of England and New England as seen through the concept "covenant of grace." The covenant of grace, von Rohr argues, enabled Puritanism to affirm both a continuation of Calvinistic predestinationism and an emergent voluntaristic pietism, pastorally both the absolute and conditional promises of God. An extensive array of primary source material is used in substantiating the author's thesis.
