This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ambroise Paré (1510–1590) was a French surgeon who specialized in battlefield medicine, especially wound treatment. He was the official royal surgeon for the kings Henry II, Francis II, Charles IX and Henry III. A humane and dedicated physician, Paré was intensely concerned with the dissemination of knowledge about medicine. He contributed to the development of artificial limbs and also spawned several significant advancements in obstetrics. His medical achievements led Paré to be regarded as the “Father of Modern Surgery.” This edition, published in 1969, is the first English translation of Ten Books of Surgery, and it contains records of many of the most advanced medical practices of the time. Paré describes procedures for the treatment of battle wounds and gangrene, and also deals with ordinary ailments such as bone fractures, contusions, and kidney stones. Paré's work provides valuable insight into an age when the practice of medicine was moved towards the discipline and order of science but was still considerably affected by superstition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an author with plenty of experience holding a scalpel, Dr. David Schneider’s The Invention of Surgery is an in-depth biography of the practice that has leapt forward over the centuries from the dangerous guesswork of ancient Greek physicians through the world-changing developments of anesthesia and antiseptic operating rooms to the “implant revolution” of the twentieth century. The Invention of Surgery is history of surgery that explains this dramatic, world-changing progress and highlights the personalities of the discipline's most dynamic historical figures. It links together the lives of the pioneering scientists who first understood what causes disease and how surgery could powerfully intercede in people’s lives, and then shows how the rise of surgery intersected with many of the greatest medical breakthroughs of the last century. And as Schneider argues, surgery has not finished transforming; new technologies are constantly reinventing both the practice of surgery and the nature of the objects we are permanently implanting in our bodies. Schneider considers these latest developments, asking “What’s next?” and analyzing how our conception of surgery has changed alongside our evolving ideas of medicine, technology, and our bodies.
Book Synopsis The Principles and Practice of Modern Surgery by : Robert Druitt

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles and Practice of Modern Surgery The American Editor of the present volume can claim but little participation in the merits of it beyond what is due to an early appreciation of the excellencies of Mr. Druitt's book, and an earnest and successful effort to procure its republication. Upon a thorough examination of it with a view to this undertaking, it appeared that its author had been so eminently successful in collecting and arranging whatever could be introduced into such a work with advantage, as to forbid any aspirations for the honors of authorship to a revising Editor, even in the humble offices of annotation and commentary, and he engaged in the enterprise, ambitious only to be instrumental in the West, the best compend of the principles and practice of surgery extant. The only work of the kind to be compared with it, is the admirable Dictionary of Mr. Samuel Cooper, and though a high compliment, it is not an undeserved one to this volume, to say that, in view of its final purpose and uses, it is, in many respects, entitle to a preference. Mr. Cooper's disquisitions - historical and speculative - on various subjects, though always learned, ingenious and interesting, are frequently too elaborate and discursive for a book of practical reference, and the substance of them may generally be found given in brief and comprehensive paragraphs, by Mr. Druitt, and accompanied by such ample bibliographical references as will enable the surgical student to prosecute his inquiries under the light of all the best guides and authorities which the science can supply. The systematic and methodical arrangement of topics in one volume, while it may be a little less convenient in a manual for the practitioner, than the alphabetical order of the "Dictionary," nevertheless contributes essentially to its excellencies as a text-book for the student. In this respect it will be found to answer an important desideratum in the apparatus of teaching, and cannot fail to become a favorite as well with Professor of Surgery as with their pupils. A full course of surgical instruction, of which this should be an epitome or synopsis, would be as nearly a complete one, both in arrangement and matter, as the present state of the science and the didactic genius of the best teacher could produce. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last quarter of a century, the fields of medical ethics and of legal issues related to medical practice have rapidly developed for a number of reasons. Firstly, the provision of healthcare nowadays is based on a complicated partnership between healthcare providers, patients, administrators and organizations responsible for providing finance; this complicated partnership frequently results in clashes of views, opinions, and priorities, which have a major ethical and legal dimension. Secondly, a major event of the 21st century is the development of multicultural societies; healthcare-related decisions thus have to be made on the background of so many different ethnicities, religions, cultures and languages, resulting in a great spectrum of ethical and legal implications. Thirdly, in the modern world, people are more mobile and can easily and cost-effectively seek treatment outside of their country of origin or residence, which raises many ethical and legal issues. Lastly, the development of new medical specialties, modern and advanced treatments for very challenging patients, and the introduction of new technologies in medical practice have dramatically broadened the spectrum of ethical and legal issues related to medical practice. This book will therefore aim to cover in detail general principles and specific issues related to the ethical and legal dimensions of modern surgical practice.
