Book excerpt: The Adventures Of Rhonnie The Cross-eyed Rhino (And Friends) Is a series of seven short stories for young children of ages from very early learners to age 7 – 9 years. It would also be found entertaining and informative to some older children and adults alike. The lead or main character, Rhonnie, is a young Rhinoceros who is born with eyes that are crossed and from an early age he decides that he's going to find a way to have his eyes straightened so that he will not appear different to his mother, his siblings and other rhinos. As he travels around, he discovers that life can be much harder for others and he learns to understand and accept this. Sometimes his efforts to get them straightened gets him into some scrapes and funny situations. Eventually he arrives at the conclusion that it isn't so important and accepts his disability as just an annoyance and sets out his ambition to adjust to it and to become the best rhino he can possibly be. As he is growing up he makes many new friends and acquaintances. He is determined to have the best time he can and sets out on adventure after adventure with his friends. Nothing fazes him in his explorations and search for fun. All stories were written entirely by Peter Davies whilst looking for a productive hobby during the lock-down period caused by the COVID19 pandemic. Each story contains life lessons for the younger reader, also morals to adopt in developing life skills. He learns the importance of sharing. It deals with diversity issues and also natural systems including environmental and social harmony.

Book excerpt: Published in 2018 to mark Saathi House’s 40th anniversary, we embarked on collecting stories and photographs of twenty individuals who have used Saathi House over the past 40 years. These memories were collected stories from some of the first service users of Saathi House way back in 1978 to those using its services in 2018. A beautifully produced full-colour book to accompany a short film and stunning exhibition exploring heritage; Saathi House Stories highlights the crucial role grassroots organisations play in shaping the journey of those who use vital local services. Apsana Khatun, at the tender age of two, accompanied her Mum to Saathi House to attend language classes during the mid 1980s. As a teenager, Apsana engaged with a Saathi House girls’ group and progressed on to becoming one of Saathi House’s youngest female youth workers. Apsana now has a well-established career in youth and community development work; and has now come full circle with her involvement with Saathi House as her young son attends the centre’s Saturday Club. That’s three generations of the same family using the socially engaging services at Saathi House! The collection of stories captured in this tome are a way of inspiring others to become more involved with local community organisations like Saathi House, where committed volunteers have long campaigned to generate local support, which has ensured city-wide respect for a project that is now one of the city’s oldest organisations set up to serve immigrant communities. Saathi House, located a stone’s throw from the Aston Villa Football Club, prides itself on the the diversity of its participants and supporters, as local people have embraced the establishment as a neutral, safe space over the decades. Now enjoying its 40th anniversary, it continues this legacy by keeping itself relevant and moving in sync with the changing needs, times and trends of the people of Aston and wider Birmingham. The Saathi House Stories project - conceived and presented by Mashkura Begum - has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). © Saathi House / Mashkura Begum, 2018.
