Book excerpt: US HISTORY/Civil War The author has fit his great Grandfather’s single line Civil War diary into a narrative that would give breath and color to the experiences. The result is a fascinating narrative, with historic references and annotations that give depth of meaning to such entries as sample on 1 July 1863: “We was about tuckered.” The compiler explains why: Amos’s poorly shod 16th Regiments of Vermont Volunteers had marched 138 miles in six days, through Virginia, across the Potomac River, and on through Maryland, to finally reach Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The first half of the book has explanations, references, annotations, and illustrations to complement the diary. The second half has a transcription of the diary itself, which cover 1862 to 1863. A review: Everton’s Genealogical Helper

Book excerpt: "Briefly, this work seeks to accomplish two things surrounding Vermont's creation years (those before the 1777 Declaration of Independence and Constitution and 1791 statehood) by: 1) introducing and exploring more fully the contributions made by two important individuals with direct connections to Ethan Allen (Hartford, Connecticut attorney Jared Ingersoll and British Army Major Philip Skene); and, 2) examining closely the time period between 1759 and 1775 when colonizing efforts were made by Skene (precipitated at the direction of Gen. Jeffrey Amherst), Allen, and others to turn the Hampshire Grants into North America's fourteenth British colony. Each of these factors occurred in the context of efforts to right the turmoil caused by Benning Wentworth's land granting practices and which placed the many titles of settlers and proprietors into legal jeopardy. Title problems formed the basis for the 1770 and 1771 Ejectment Trials that introduce Ingersoll (already representing clients involved in title-related ligitation south of the Grants dating to 1766), which then led directly to the formation of the Green Mountain Boys with Allen at their head. Following this, when the creation of courts in Charlotte County (1772) to possibly right the Ejectment Trials results did not appear feasible, the creation of a new colony that Skene would govern became the next focus of the Grants leaders. All was lost with the outbreak of war in 1775"--

Book excerpt: The ruins of Daniel Shays's fortified settlement reveal the hidden story of the famous rebellion. Shays and the Regulators founded the settlement deep in the Vermont wilderness after fleeing the uprising they led in 1787 in Massachusetts. Rediscovered in 1997 and under study since 2013, these remnants divulge secrets of Shays's life that previously remained unknown, including his connection to Millard Filmore and the Anti-Federalist lawyer John Bay. As the leader of the site's first formal study, Stephen D. Butz weaves together the tale of the archaeological investigation, along with Shays's heroic life in the Continental army, his role in the infamous rebellion that bears his name and his influence on American law.

They became exasperated. In his madness one of their leaders threatened to march his slaves over Bunker Hill! The people of the free States had at last determined and become fixed in their purpose, that freedom should become national and slavery sectional - that slavery should be suffered to remain where it then existed, and that no more of our free soil should be polluted by the footsteps of bondmen.'
