Excerpt: ... tree of the suborder, and should bear the name of the man who has done more than any other worker to further our knowledge of the Odonata, namely Baron de Selys-Longchamps. In contrast to the Coenagrioninae the Protoneurinae do not have the reduction in the number of postnodals, they are as numerous in Selysioneura (fig. 153) as in Disparoneura (fig. 132). Ill--tendencies in specialization These have been rather fully discussed in previous papers, particularly by Dr. Needham (1903a) for the order Odonata as a whole, and by Dr. Calvert (1913) for the Zygoptera with special reference to the Megapodagrioninae. It is my purpose here to review their opinions and to add a few observations of my own. I think it must be apparent from the preceding discussion on the phylogeny that the outstanding features in the development of the Zygoptera are a constant reduction and simplification of venation. At any rate this is true from the standpoint of comparative morphology and to a certain degree it seems to be so paleontologically. As might be expected this reduction is to some extent accompanied by a decrease in the power of flight. Dr. Calvert says, "Many of the ideas which have been expressed on the changes which have taken place in the venation of the Odonate wings have been based on the comparative morphology of living representatives of the order or on mechanical advantage. It does not follow that these foundations are trustworthy or that there has always been mechanical improvement in the wings. Degeneration is just as probable as progressive development. The actual course of phylogeny cannot be deduced from these considerations or from the data of morphology. It seems therefore desirable to attempt to ascertain what paleontological evidence...

Download or read book Dragonfly Genera of the New World written by Rosser W. Garrison and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2006-09-15 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Single Volume Reference/Science award of the Professional and Scholarly Publishing Awards given by the Association of American Publishers Dragonfly Genera of the New World is a beautifully illustrated and comprehensive guide to the taxonomy and ecology of dragonflies in North, Middle, and South America. A reference of the highest quality, this book reveals the striking beauty and complexity of this diverse order. Although Odonata—dragonflies and damselflies—are among the most studied groups of insects, until now there has been no reliable means to identify the New World genera of either group. This volume provides fully illustrated and up-to-date keys for all dragonfly genera with descriptive text for each genus, accompanied by distribution maps and 1,595 diagnostic illustrations, including wing patterns and characteristics of the genitalia. For entomologists, limnologists, and ecologists, Dragonfly Genera of the New World is an indispensable resource for field identification and laboratory research.

Book excerpt: This beautiful volume, with hundreds of fascinating hand-drawn illustrations, completes the two-volume work on the order Odonata in the Encyclopedia of South American Aquatic Insects. The Zygoptera volume encompasses the small dragonflies often called damselflies. The sections on the morphology of the adults and larvae are followed by discussions of factors influencing their distribution and instructions on the methods used to observe, collect, preserve, and examine specimens.

Priest of Messrs Chapman & Hall, who saved us from many errors and omissions, and to Mrs R. G. Davies for substantial help in preparing the bibliographies and checking references. London O. W. R. R. G. D. May 1976 Part III THEORDERSOFINSECTS THE CLASSIFICATION AND PHYLOGENY OF INSECTS The classification of insects has passed through many changes and with the growth of detailed knowledge an increasing number of orders has come to be recognized. Handlirsch (1908) and Wilson and Doner (1937) have reviewed the earlier attempts at classification, among which the schemes of Brauer (1885), Sharp (1899) and Borner (1904) did much to define the more distinctive recent orders. In 1908 Handlirsch published a more revolutionary system, incorporating recent and fossil forms, which gave the Collembola, Thysanura and Diplura the status of three independent Arthropodan classes and considered as separate orders such groups as the Sialoidea, Raphidioidea, Heteroptera and Homoptera. He also split up the old order Orthoptera, gave its components ordinal rank and regrouped them with some of the other orders into a subclass Orthopteroidea and another subclass Blattaeformia.

This book was released on 2011-09-24 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This issue of ZooKeys celebrates the 75th birthday of Alexandr P. Rasnitsyn, a pioneer in the palaeontology and phylogeny of Hymenoptera, as well as a leader generally in insect systematics and evolution. Born in Moscow, Russia, on 24 September 1936, he developed his passion for Hymenoptera at an early age. After completing his degrees in 1960 he joined the Arthropoda Laboratory in the Paleontological Institute of the USSR (now Russian) Academy of Sciences, Moscow, and worked his way from Technician to the Head of the laboratory, in this capacityÿ leading the most productive group of paleoentomologists for 28 years. He has co-authored and edited several keystone books on insect paleontology and evolution, including History of Insects (2002), the first large-scale work of its kind in English. Rasnitsyn served as the first President of the International Palaeoentomological Society, and was bestowed Honorary Membership by the Russian Entomological Society and in 2008 with the Distinguished Research Medal of the International Society of Hymenopterists. Herein colleagues from around the world have presented original contributions to the systematics of diverse insect orders, living and fossil, as a tribute to this pioneer of Hymenoptera and paleoentomological research. Numerous new taxa are described and their phylogenetic implications explored. A biographical sketch and a list of Rasnitsyn?s more than 360 scientific publications (spanning 52 years) are provided.
