Book excerpt: Gardening for Everyone is a sustainable guide to growing vegetables in five simple steps: planning, building, planting, tending and harvesting. With the same wisdom and stunning aesthetic as Simply Living Well, Julia's beautiful new book is a guide to creating and growing a garden simply and sustainably with profiles of essential vegetables and herbs, ecological tips, and fun and creative projects. Growing food in your backyard (or even on a porch or windowsill!) is one of the simplest and most rewarding ways to nourish yourself, be self-sufficient and connect with nature in a hands-on way. Here sustainability expert Julia Watkins shares everything you need to know to grow your own vegetables, fruits and herbs, as well as wildflowers and other beneficial companion plants. The book covers all the nuts and bolts of creating and caring for your garden - planning, building, planting, tending and harvesting - followed by a deeper dive into the plants themselves: demystifying annuals vs. perennials, cold-weather vs. warm-weather veggies, and profiles of favorite crops. Throughout, Julia offers tips for creating an eco-friendly and sustainable garden (such as vermicomposting, no-till 'lasagna' gardening, and attracting pollinators), plus some fun and unexpected hands-on projects like how to build a bean teepee, make wildflower seed paper, and enjoy refreshing herbal lemonade ice pops.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home Garden: A Book on Vegetable and Small-Fruit Growing, for the Use of the Amateur Gardener The writer of this little book is a firm believer in a vegetable garden for every family so situated that it can have one. This for several reasons: F int - A garden, well cared for, will furnish half if not more of the living for a family of ordinary size, provided, of course, it is made up of persons who are fond of vegetables. Not only is this possible through the summer, but the year round, for many of our best vegetables can be carried through the winter in fine con dition with but very little trouble. And it need not be a large garden to do this. The old theory - Which was not a theory, after all, but a fact - that a little piece of land, well tilled is a source of revenue that the wise man cannot afford to overlook, holds true in this case as much as it does when the farm is considered. I know of no other way in which such a goodly share of the family living can be secured; therefore I urge the making of a garden as a means of support for the family. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home Vegetable Garden Fig. 1. - Fall vegetable gardens grown by students at the University Farm, Davis. Almost all varieties of vegetables were planted the third week of August, and almost all were harvested before the middle of December. The varieties and crops grown were Snowball cauliflower, Copenhagen Market cabbage, Southern Curled mustard, Scotch Curled kale, Paris White Cos lettuce, New York lettuce, Chantenay carrots, Detroit Dark Red beets, Paoting Chinese cabbage, Purple Vienna kohlrabi, Large White rutabaga, Purple Top White Globe turnip, Savoy spinach, Prickly Winter spinach, green bunch onions from dry sets, and Bountiful beans. The garden should be located near a faucet or an irrigation line in order to insure an adequate supply of water. Most vegetables need considerable moisture to keep them growing and to make them good edible quality. It is also best to have the garden protected from the prevailing winds, especially if these are drying and severe. Proximity to large trees should be avoided, as most crops need full sunlight, and as the trees use the plant food and soil moisture for a considerable distance on all sides. Some crops, however, such as spinach and lettuce, do fairly well growing in partial shade, especially during the warm season. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the best books for beginning and experienced vegetable gardeners, this clear, straightforward, easy-to-read gardening bestseller (over 500,000 copies sold) uses organic, biodynamic methods to produce large amounts of vegetables in very small spaces. To accommodate today's lifestyles, a garden needs to fit easily into a very small plot, take as little time as possible to maintain, require a minimum amount of water, and still produce prolifically. That's exactly what a postage stamp garden does. Postage stamp gardens are as little as 4 by 4 feet, and, after the initial soil preparation, they require very little extra work to produce a tremendous amount of vegetables--for instance, a 5-by-5-foot bed will produce a minimum of 200 pounds of vegetables. When first published 40 years ago, the postage stamp techniques, including closely planted beds rather than rows, vines and trailing plants grown vertically to free up space, and intercropping, were groundbreaking. Revised for an all new generation of gardeners, this edition includes brand new information on the variety of heirloom vegetables available today and how to grow them the postage stamp way. Now, in an ever busier world, the postage stamp intensive gardening method continues to be invaluable for gardeners who wish to weed, water, and work a whole lot less yet produce so much more.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A-B-C of Vegetable Gardening Another notion is, that in order to have a good garden a large amount of time and labor must be expended on it. Not so. A very small amount of systematized labor will be demanded by even a good-sized garden, if it is planned in such a manner that labor - sav ing tools can be used in its cultivation. If we look'back to the gardening days of fifty or even twenty-five years ago, when every thing was done at the hardest and the hand had to do a good share of the work that we now do with helpful implements, it is not to be wondered at that the old-time care of a garden discourages many from undertaking to have one. Happily those days are over, and with the gardening facilities of the present it is an easy matter to accomplish more in an hour than could be done then in a day. There is really no drudgery in gardening as it is done to - day. On the contrary, there is posi tive pleasure in the operation of the ma chinery which inventive genius has furnished for the up-to-date gardener's use. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typically, vegetable gardening is about the long view: peas sown in spring aren't harvested until summer, and tomatoes started indoors in February can't be eaten until July. But it's not true for all plants. Some things can be planted and eaten in weeks, days, even hours. The Speedy Vegetable Garden highlights more than 50 quick crops, with complete information on how to sow, grow, and harvest each plant, and sumptuous photography that provides inspiration and a visual guide for when to harvest. In addition to instructions for growing, it also provides recipes that highlight each crop’s unique flavor, like Chickpea sprout hummus, stuffed tempura zucchini flowers, and a paella featuring calendula. Sprouted seeds are the fastest. Microgreens can be harvested in weeks: cilantro, 14 days after planting; arugula and fennel in 10 days. And a handful of vegetable varieties grow more quickly than their slower relatives, like dwarf French beans (60 days), cherry tomatoes (65 days), and early potatoes (75 days). The Speedy Vegetable Garden puts fresh, seed-to-table food at your fingertips, fast!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Make a Vegetable Garden: A Practical and Suggestive Manual for the Home Garden Longfellow says, There is no death; What seems so is transition, and to me this giving, taking and returning by Nature is one of the grandest things in the world. He who is near to Nature's heart, is very near his Creator. It is the love of all that is outdoors, and Dame Experience's sharp but unforgettable lessons, together with the many things we have learned from books and friends, that have made it possible for us to write this volume. May it make warm friends and help others to enjoy their garden more than ever before. It has been our earnest effort to tell the simple, necessary things, leaving the deep and scientific parts to those who make such things their life-study. I trust, however, that we have left out no links in the chain of the plants' life - history. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. So fragrant, it fills its place in the garden full of perfume, when the dew forms at night. The big clumsy martynia grows scores of exquisite orchid-like blooms. The okra blossom has colors as rich and varied as those of the choicest gladioli. Garden peas are as pretty as sweet peas. Blossom and fruit; bird song and sunlight and cool shade; the fresh odor of the newly turned soil; the con tinual surprises and the wonder of growth - these are some of the riches of a real gardener. Her unique approach, which she calls “horticultural how-to and woo-woo,” is a blend of vital information you need to memorize and intuitive steps you must simply feel and surrender to. In A Way to Garden, Roach imparts decades of garden wisdom on seasonal gardening, ornamental plants, vegetable gardening, design, gardening for wildlife, organic practices, and much more. She also challenges gardeners to think beyond their garden borders and to consider the ways gardening can enrich the world.
