Book excerpt: The light-duty vehicle fleet is expected to undergo substantial technological changes over the next several decades. New powertrain designs, alternative fuels, advanced materials and significant changes to the vehicle body are being driven by increasingly stringent fuel economy and greenhouse gas emission standards. By the end of the next decade, cars and light-duty trucks will be more fuel efficient, weigh less, emit less air pollutants, have more safety features, and will be more expensive to purchase relative to current vehicles. Though the gasoline-powered spark ignition engine will continue to be the dominant powertrain configuration even through 2030, such vehicles will be equipped with advanced technologies, materials, electronics and controls, and aerodynamics. And by 2030, the deployment of alternative methods to propel and fuel vehicles and alternative modes of transportation, including autonomous vehicles, will be well underway. What are these new technologies - how will they work, and will some technologies be more effective than others? Written to inform The United States Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission standards, this new report from the National Research Council is a technical evaluation of costs, benefits, and implementation issues of fuel reduction technologies for next-generation light-duty vehicles. Cost, Effectiveness, and Deployment of Fuel Economy Technologies for Light-Duty Vehicles estimates the cost, potential efficiency improvements, and barriers to commercial deployment of technologies that might be employed from 2020 to 2030. This report describes these promising technologies and makes recommendations for their inclusion on the list of technologies applicable for the 2017-2025 CAFE standards.

Book excerpt: The chapter presents the application of variable compression ratio VCR technology for an internal combustion engine. The engine,Äôs overall construction has been designed as the deep reconfiguration of liquid-cooled, heavy-duty diesel engine of type IFA 4 VD 14,5/12-1 SRW. An eccentric shaft-based sliding mechanism has been used for changing position of engine cylinder head assembly. By ensuring a high stiffness of the engine layout together with additional sliding mechanism, the combustion chamber volume of the engine can be changed precisely without changing the displacement of the cylinders. In result, the engine compression ratio can be continuously varied during normal engine operation from the value of 19:1 down to 9:1.

Book excerpt: Conventional gasoline engines work on the fixed compression ratio which is a golden mean between the knocking at high loads and fuel economy at low loads. A variable compression ratio engine can work at various compression ratios depending upon the vehicle performance needs. Engine downsizing, great fuel economy, no knocking operation and flexibility in fuel used make them a brilliant choice as automotive engines in near future. However the VCR engines also suffers from disadvantage of mass manufacturing due to their complexity. The author of the present book studied the details of VCR engines and proposed a concept of conversion of fixed compression ratio in to a variable compression ratio engine. The newly designed mechanism makes use of a split type of cylinder block which varies the compression ratio by lifting the cylinder head. The mechanism can be loaded on two stroke as well as four stroke engines. Mechanical simplicity, improved fuel economy and increase in the brake thermal and volumetric efficiency are the major advantages after conversion of fixed compression ratio engine into a variable compression ratio engine.

Book excerpt: The efficiency of a vehicle having a body and a reciprocating piston four-stroke internal combustion engine is increased substantially by greatly reducing the size of the engine relative to the weight of the body. The great reduction in engine size relative to the weight of the body causes the engine to operate in a much more efficient range during almost all of the time of its operation. Peak power needs are satisfied by turbocharging and varying the compression ratio.

Book excerpt: Various combinations of commercially available technologies could greatly reduce fuel consumption in passenger cars, sport-utility vehicles, minivans, and other light-duty vehicles without compromising vehicle performance or safety. Assessment of Technologies for Improving Light Duty Vehicle Fuel Economy estimates the potential fuel savings and costs to consumers of available technology combinations for three types of engines: spark-ignition gasoline, compression-ignition diesel, and hybrid. According to its estimates, adopting the full combination of improved technologies in medium and large cars and pickup trucks with spark-ignition engines could reduce fuel consumption by 29 percent at an additional cost of $2,200 to the consumer. Replacing spark-ignition engines with diesel engines and components would yield fuel savings of about 37 percent at an added cost of approximately $5,900 per vehicle, and replacing spark-ignition engines with hybrid engines and components would reduce fuel consumption by 43 percent at an increase of $6,000 per vehicle. The book focuses on fuel consumption-the amount of fuel consumed in a given driving distance-because energy savings are directly related to the amount of fuel used. In contrast, fuel economy measures how far a vehicle will travel with a gallon of fuel. Because fuel consumption data indicate money saved on fuel purchases and reductions in carbon dioxide emissions, the book finds that vehicle stickers should provide consumers with fuel consumption data in addition to fuel economy information.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internal combustion engines are among the most fascinating and ingenious machines which, with their invention and continuous development, have positively influenced the industrial and social history during the last century, especially by virtue of the role played as propulsion technology par excellence used in on-road private and commercial transportation. Nowadays, the growing attention towards the de-carbonization opens up new scenarios, but IC engines will continue to have a primary role in multiple sectors: automotive, marine, offroad machinery, mining, oil & gas and rail, power generation, possibly with an increasing use of non-fossil fuels. The book is organized in monothematic chapters, starting with a presentation of the general and functional characteristics of IC engines, and then dwelling on the details of the fluid exchange processes and the definition of the layout of intake and exhaust systems, obviously including the supercharging mechanisms, and continue with the description of the injection and combustion processes, to conclude with the explanation of the formation, control and reduction of pollutant emissions and radiated noise.
